Kawanami Gokoku Shrine (川南護国神社) is a Shinto shrine located in Miyazaki Prefecture Japan. It is a Gokoku Shrines, or a shrine dedicated to war dead.[a] Such shrines were made to serve to enshrine the war dead, and they were all considered "branches" of Yasukuni Shrine. They were renamed from Shokonsha in 1939.[2]It is the paratrooper shrine
Kawaminami Gokoku Shrine is a shrine located in Kawaminami Town , Koyu District, Miyazaki Prefecture. The temple grounds are also known as the birthplace of the Army Airborne Parachute Unit.

The shrine enshrines the spirits of 634 war dead from the former Kawaminami village and approximately 12,000 war dead from the Army Raiding Corps. This is because the Teishin Shrine, which was established within the grounds of the Army Volunteer Training Department, was burned down by the GHQ when it occupied Miyazaki after the war, and was therefore enshrined when the Kawaminami Gokoku Shrine was constructed. [3]
In addition, since the temple grounds are the former site of a landing strip for parachute training, a monument marking the birthplace of airborne parachute units has been erected there. Every year, an annual festival is held by the Memorial Association, attended by the town, surviving families, members of the Airborne Veterans Association and the Airborne Comrades Association, and members of the 1st Airborne Brigade (Japan) of the Japan Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the successor to the Army Volunteer Corps.
Although it calls itself a Gokoku Shrine, it is not included in the list of Gokoku Shrines across the country posted on the Yasukuni Shrine website. (See the section on Gokoku Shrine.)

The following is a summary of the inscription on the "Birthplace of the Airborne Parachute Regiment Monument" and references [3]
With the establishment of the Army Airborne Training Department in 1941, the unit was relocated from the Baicheng Army Flying School in Manchuria to Karasehara and Nyutabaru in Miyazaki Prefecture. At that time, the Army Horse Replacement Department's military horse ranch in Karasehara, Kawaminami village, was converted and used as a parachute landing site.
The assault troops were deployed to combat, and in order to commemorate the heroic spirits who died on the battlefield, the Assault Shrine was established on the grounds of the Army Volunteer Training Department in Toyohara in 1944 (Showa 19). [4] After Japan's defeat in the war, the building of the Army Volunteer Training Unit was used by Miyazaki Normal School, which managed the Teishin Shrine. However, the GHQ, which occupied Miyazaki at the end of 1945, burned down the shrine in the early summer of 1946 .
For a time, the altar of Ishikawa Fujinosuke in Karase, Kawaminami village, was borrowed to enshrine the heroic spirits, but in 1949 (Showa 24), when Kawaminami Gokoku Shrine was built to enshrine 634 heroic spirits of Kawaminami village, the heroic spirits of Teishin Shrine were enshrined there together.
In 1956, some of the heroic spirits from Kawaminami Gokoku Shrine were enshrined at Mount Kōya. [3]
In 1963, a monument commemorating the birthplace of the Airborne Parachute Regiment was erected. [5]
In 1991, in order to leave a record of the volunteer corps for future generations, a monument was erected to commemorate “the origins of the enshrinement of over 10,000 heroic spirits of the paratrooper corps at Kawaminami Gokoku Shrine” [3] [5] .

昭和十六年 川南村にあった広大な軍馬補充部の牧場が落下傘部隊の降下場に転用され
同年九月から使用を始めた 翌十七年には兵営が建設され 数千の落下傘兵がこの地で
練武に励んだ。
天下る落下傘兵は 天孫降臨になぞらえて空の神兵と称され 村人の庇護後援のもと精鋭
誇る空挺部隊が練成され 次々と南の決戦場に出て征き活躍した
しかし 我々の悲願も空しく戦敗れ多くの戦友が戦野に屍を晒し そのみ霊だけが当時豊原
にあった陸軍挺身練習部構内の挺身神社に神鎮り給もうたのである ところが 二十一年初
夏の頃 宮崎県に進駐していた米軍は理不尽にも挺身神社を焼払ってしまった 拠り所を失
った英霊は 当時旧兵舎を校舎にしていた宮崎師範学校の寄宿舎周辺を 毎夜白い体操衣
袴姿で走り廻るという噂が立った。
そのようなことがあって 一時唐瀬の石川富士之助翁の仏壇にお祭りし 更に昭和二十四年
この護國神社が再建されるに及び ここに合祀し今日に及んでいる。
護國神社の祭祀は 川南護國神社奉賛会によって永久に行われることに感謝し後世のため
ここに由来を刻しておく次第である。

In addition to the memorial to the Army Volunteer Corps, a monument called the "Airborne Song Monument" was erected within Nyutabaru_Air_Base of the Japan Japan Air Self-Defense Force, which is located on the site of the former Nyutabaru Airfield. Additionally, within the grounds of the National Hospital Organization Miyazaki Hospital, there remains a war relic: the water tower of the 3rd Regiment Barracks. It is the only remaining structure of the military parade ground that was lost to farmland development, and it remains as a symbol of Kawaminami Town.
Meanwhile, the navy also formed a parachute unit, and the "Nonochi Monument, Birthplace of the Navy Parachute Unit" was erected on the grounds of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force 's JMSDF Tateyama Air Base in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture .
