Yes, they are VERY important, since they are one the BIG wikipedia.

Disambiguation

I did not know that if a template has a category, all articles with it auto join the category. See the history[1] of the template: a syop deleted the category when a user added it. -- aflm 19:03, 1 January 2006 (UTC)
