Thanks for categorizing
changeHello, Zjui3r. I noticed that you categorized several article that needed it. Thanks for doing that!
Please make sure you categorize completely. For example, I noticed that on Anthony Rota, you just added birth and death years. That is helpful. However, when you add categories without adding all the applicable categories, the article disappears from the list of pages needing categories, and it's possible that no one will notice that it needs more. I have added more categories to this article so that you can see what I mean.
Also, when categorizing articles about people, be sure to add a defaultsort where needed. Wikipedia:Categories#Sorting of people has information about this.
Thanks again, and let me know if I can help you determine all the appropriate categories for any given article or type of article. -- Auntof6 (talk) 22:52, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for informing me. I will add all applicable categories when adding categories to articles in the future. However, sometimes, even though a category has already been created, it becomes difficult to find that category. Zjui3r (talk) 06:56, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- That's true. This wiki doesn't have the same categories or category structure as enwiki. Also, the ones we have that are for the same things aren't always named the same because of our requirement to use simple terms. Over time, you can get familiar with what categories we do have, and what they're named. When in doubt, you could use the {{Improve categories}} template.
- A trick I use is to think of the old journalism method of addressing the "Five Ws": who, what, when, where, why. You can also add how and how much. Think of those things when deciding what categories are needed. For example, in an article about a building, some of these might be relevant:
- Who: who built or designed it, who owns it
- What: what kind of building is it, what is it used for
- When: when was it built, when was it torn down, when was it added to a heritage register
- Where: where is the building
- Why: why is it notable, why was it built, why was it torn down, why was it abandoned
- How: how was it built (if there's anything special about that), how tall is it
- How much: how much did it cost to build, how much time did it take to build
- In an article about a person:
- Who: who is the person, who do they work for
- What: what is the person's occupation
- When: when were they born, when did they die (or are they living), when did the important things in their life happen
- Where: where were they born, where do they work or live
- Why: why are they notable
- I'm not thinking of anything for how or how much as far as a person goes, but these are some examples. Some of all of these can be accounted for not only in the article but also in the categories.
- Some of those are probably a stretch, but it's an example of the technique.
- Since you're fairly new here, you might be interested in this list I maintain of things that are different here. The list isn't policy or guideline, but it links to some relevant policies and guidelines. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:17, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
- The "Five Ws" approach you shared is helpful in almost every article. Zjui3r (talk) 18:01, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
