Wikipedia:Article wizard/Biographical notability
If a person has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject, they are notable enough for their own article.
Very few people are notable enough for an article on Wikipedia. Like any encyclopedia, Wikipedia includes biographies of important and famous people.
The usual rule for biographies is that there must be enough reliable, independent information to show that a lot of people are interested in the person. People who satisfy at least one of the requirements below can have their own Wikipedia articles. This is because there is likely to be a good amount of information available about them and public interest in them. This list is not complete, but it should give you an idea about the level of notability required for Wikipedia:
- A person who made a widely recognised contribution that is part of the historical record in their specific field
- Political figures holding an international, national or regional office
- Widely recognised people in entertainment and media
- Sportspeople who have played in a fully professional league, a fully professional competition in a non-league sport (such as swimming), or at the highest level in amateur sports (usually meaning the Olympic Games or World Championships)
- Published authors, editors, and photographers whose work has received several independent reviews or awards
- Artists, architects, engineers, and other professionals whose work is widely recognised and who are likely to become a part of the historical record of that field
- Persons who have become well known for their involvement in news events
- A person who was the main subject of several notable published works from independent sources (multiple similar stories describing a single news event only count as one instance of coverage)
Note: In cases where a person is notable only for their role in one event (such as a crime), an article on the event is preferred to having a biography for the person.
