- ↑ The world governing body for nine-pin and ten-pin bowling changed its name from Fédération Internationale des Quilleurs to World Bowling in 2014.
- ↑ 2.0 2.1 The World Baseball Softball Confederation, which governs both baseball and softball, was created in 2013 when two other governing bodies, the International Baseball Federation and the International Softball Federation, merged (which means they became one governing body).
- ↑ When rugby sevens was played at the World Games, the world governing body was called the International Rugby Board. They changed their name to "World Rugby" in 2014.
- ↑ There was no program for invitational sports at the 1981 World Games. News did not call water polo an invitational sport. An agreement was reached with FINA before the Games not to allow women's water polo athletes to march in the opening ceremony. This was done because the International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not like that water polo was included in the 1981 World Games.[3]

These sports were played at previous World Games, but are not played anymore.
- Bodybuilding (Bodybuilding, Fitness) – Last played in 2009[4]
- Bowling (Nine-pin bowling) – Only played in 2005 officially
- Cable wakeboard - Only played in 2005 officially
- Casting – Last played in 2005
- Flying Disc (Disc golf) – Only played in 2001 officially
- Indoor cycling (Artistic cycling, Cycle ball) – Only played in 1989 officially
- Lifesaving (Beach) – Last played in 2009
- Netball – Last played in 1993
- Roller hockey (quad skate) - Last played in 2001
- Sambo – Last played in 1993
The following sports were part of The World Games in the past. However, they are now official events at the Olympics.
- Badminton – became an Olympic sport at the 1992 Summer Olympics
- Baseball and Softball – were Olympic sports from 1992 (baseball)/1996 (softball) to 2008. Returned to the Olympics in 2020. It is not known if they will be played at future Olympic Games.
- Beach volleyball - became an Olympic sport at the 1996 Summer Olympics
- Rugby sevens – became an Olympic sport at the 2016 Summer Olympics
- Taekwondo – became an Olympic sport at the 2000 Summer Olympics
- Trampoline – some individual events were introduced at the 2000 Summer Olympics
- Triathlon – became an Olympic sport at the 2000 Summer Olympics
- Water polo (women) - became an Olympic sport at the 2000 Summer Olympics. (Men never competed in water polo in The World Games because it has been in all Summer Olympics since 1900.)
- Weightlifting (women) - became an Olympic sport at the 2000 Summer Olympics. (Men never competed in weightlifting in The World Games because it has been in all Summer Olympics since 1920.)

(In 1989) Aikido and Minigolf were presented as invitational sports, and Triathlon, Boomerang and Flying Disc were among the demonstration sports. This was the first time there were sports demonstrations at The World Games.
