Franche-Comté

Franche-Comté (meaning "Free County") is a former administrative region of France. It is now part of the administrative region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It is in the east of the country, bordering Switzerland. Its capital was Besançon. In 2009, about 1.1 million people lived in the region.

In the local dialect, Frainc-Comtou, the name is Fraintche-Comtè. In Arpitan it is Franche-Comtât.
