Haguenau is a commune in Alsace in north-eastern France, in the Bas-Rhin department, of which it is a subprefecture. It is in the Grand Est region.

It is second in size in the Bas-Rhin only to Strasbourg, some 30 km (19 mi) to the south.

Haguenau is in the northern part of the Bas-Rhin department. The Moder river, a left tributary of the Rhine river, flows through the commune.

It has an area of 182.6 km2 (70.5 sq mi), the commune of Alsace with the largest territory.[1] Its average altitude is 159 m (522 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 140 m (460 ft).[2]

Haguenau is a subprefecture in the Bas-Rhin department since 1790. It is the capital of the Haguenau-Wissembourg arrondissement and is also the administrative centre (French: chef-lieu) of the canton of Haguenau formed by 14 communes, with 49,203 inhabitants (2014).[5]
