Khankendi (Azerbaijani: Xankəndi) is a city in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, legally in Azerbaijan, but was militarily controlled by the Armenian forces as the capital city of the unrecognised Republic of Artsakh (also known as Nagorno-Karabakh Republic). Stepanakert (Armenian: Ստեփանակերտ) or The city was about 40,000 ethnic Armenians. The entire Azerbaijani population was driven away from the city during the Nagorno-Karabakh War but now it is populated fully by Azerbaijanis.
