Montmorillon

Montmorillon is a commune in the Vienne department, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, in central-western France. The clay mineral montmorillonite (a silicate) was named after Montmorillon when it was discovered there in 1847.

It is one of the two subprefectures of the Vienne department and the capital of the canton of Montmorillon.

Montmorillon is well known for its macarons, and has a museum dedicated to it.

Geography

Montmorillon is along the Gartempe river. The city is at 50 km (31 mi) to the southeast of Poitiers and at 90 km (56 mi) to the nortwest of Limoges.

It has an area of 57 km2 (22 sq mi) and its average altitude is 125 m (410 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 90 m (300 ft).[1]
