History

May I remind the anonymous contributor to the history section that Wikipedia is NPOV - Calling the British "occupation" "brutal" are hardly NPOV. I'm sure you have a great deal to contribute in this area, but at least try to keep your POV to yourself. Also 1801 to 1922 is 121 years - not centuries. Well, Ireland was part of the United Kingdom from 1801 to 1922. But it should be said that the initial invasion was in 1169 and by 1603, the last areas were entirely conquered. So to say that the British were only in control for 121 years is misleading. 83.71.107.211

Move to "Ireland (state)"

To have the title at "Republic of Ireland" misleads the reader into thinking that this is an official name of the country. The 1937 Irish Constitution says, "The name of the State is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland."[1] The usage "Republic of Ireland" goes against the recommendations of the AP Stylebook and other style guides. Certainly the Irish government has always objected to the idea that there is a "Republic of Ireland" that is not the same thing as "Ireland." If you look at the Irish U.N. Mission site, they use "Ireland" or "Irish state". The phrase "Republic of Ireland" is carefully avoided. Under the Ireland Act of 1949, the Ireland vs. Republic of Ireland distinction was official British usage. In 1989, the Irish Supreme Court ruled the state's name is "Ireland" and that "Republic of Ireland" is "not its correct name" (Ellis v O'Dea). The British agreed to stop using the phrase "Republic of Ireland" in 1998 as part of the Good Friday Agreement. Kauffner (talk) 10:42, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

This has been discussed far too many times in the past on en.wiki. Since there is a much larger participation in those discussions than will ever occur here. It is a much better idea that we follow their lead on such a controversial subject. -DJSasso (talk) 13:03, 9 December 2013 (UTC)

Support. The name of the country is clearly Ireland by all national and international standards. Using brackets to clarify the difference between the country and the island is a logical and clear outcome. Cashew.wheel (talk) 16:35, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

Coventional long name

The official name is "Ireland". As per @Kauffner's post above, article 4 of the Irish constitution defines the name of the country as "Ireland". Cashew.wheel (talk) 16:26, 25 May 2022 (UTC)
