Subst
changeMust I subst the template when I add it on a talk page?-- 陈鼎翔 贡献 Chat with Tdxiang on IRC! 10:58, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
Problem
changeI have used the template, however I am having a problem this evening with it. An example can be found here. I like the way that the signature is now included on the template, too. Thanks. Billz 17:15, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- Should be working now, but you'll need to repost the welcomes if you've substed them. It was because it was already substituting the text when you add 'subst:', and then it tried to substitute the page name, which didn't need substing. Basically it tried to do the same job twice and got confused. Archer7 | talk 18:13, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- My signature on the message is still not working, even though I did not use the 'Subst' command in this instance. Billz 19:58, 5 July 2006 (UTC)
- I fixed it so that you could subst the template. It should work, it does in the sandbox. Archer7 | talk 12:14, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Protect
changeI fear that people may vandalise it. can someone protect it? Thanks.-- Tdxiang 10:24, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
- If you use {{subst:welcome}} and the Welcome template is vandalised at a future date, the talk pages where the subst: has been used will not be affected. Please bear this in mind when using this template. Thank you. Billz (Talk) 10:51, 8 August 2006 (UTC)
Substing doesn't always work
changeThe {{SUBST:}} syntax doen't always do its job. Sometimes it'll show up as Welcome while sometimes it'll go {{SUBST:PAGENAME}}. I'm going to change it to BASEPAGENAME. --Gp75motorsports REV LIMITER 11:04, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
Adding info about user pages?
changeHi, I've noticed today that a user has created his user page in the article space (which was quickly deleted). Should the welcome template have something like a link to the user page policy, or have something that tells them about the user page link at the top and not to create it in the mainspace? - Æåm Fætsøn /ˈaɪæm ˈfætsən/ 11:30, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
- I think it's too much to have it in the welcome template. Remember that userpages are entirely optional, and are really among the least important things an encyclopedia needs to worry about. I have, however, included the link in Wikipedia:Useful, so it's accessible from the welcome template if not directly within it. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 11:35, 21 November 2008 (UTC)
Simplifying.
changeHey guys, I was just wondering, should we change the section that says "Good luck and Happy editing" to "Good Luck and Happy changing"? Really we don't edit pages on simple, we change pages. I think it just sounds simpler. Comments?--Gordonrox24 | Talk 03:17, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
- Looking at the history of the template, it has been done a couple of times, but never stays. The last change to this was by me, but I self-reverted. I think that, for the sake of being consistent, it should be changed as you suggest. ···Katerenka (討論) 03:19, 21 December 2009 (UTC)
Automatic signing
changeShould we remove the automatic signing from the template? It's confusing because, to my knowledge, this is the only common template that does this. Kansan (talk) 21:38, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- Working on that now. Griffinofwales (talk) 21:38, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
- All done. Automatic signing removed. Griffinofwales (talk) 21:41, 25 April 2010 (UTC)
Use Welcome2 template
changeI strongly suggest using Template:Welcome2. The main reason is because the template is more colourful and better looking. What do you guys think? Hydriz[Discussions needed] 03:58, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Personally, I agree with you that it looks better, although it of course remains a matter of personal preference. Kansan (talk) 04:00, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Then who should we add the welcome message to? New user accounts, auto created accounts or both? I think new accounts only, since the auto accounts should know how to change pages.Hydriz[Discussions needed] 04:06, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- New user accounts who have made at least one good faith edit. Kansan (talk) 04:08, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Then who is in charge of this? Is it anyone? Hydriz[Discussions needed] 04:10, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- None of us are "in charge"; the Wikimedia Foundation runs this project, and most policies come from users here. All users here are equally important; there are some administrators who have access to additional tools/powers, but that does not mean that they are more important to keeping things going here. Kansan (talk) 04:18, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Ah. I see. Thanks! Rather "new" here. :) Hydriz[Discussions needed] 04:20, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

- With regard to autocreated accounts: there are two templates for that, {{welcome-en}} and {{welcome-iw}}. They will indeed be more familiar with the basic structure of our wiki, but we are still different in a lot of ways :) sonia♫ 07:58, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
- Then how do we know they came in from another Wikipedia? They might have came from a sister project(like Wiktionary)

Edit request
changePlease change “any pages you want” to “any pages you want that are not protected”. Daniel "Danny" Lorraine (talk) 01:25, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- I think that is getting too specific there as the point that is trying to be made is that you can edit anything, and you can, in cases where the page is protected you just have to make a request like this one as opposed to directly editing it. But in the end its the same. -DJSasso (talk) 10:49, 19 July 2018 (UTC)

changeWill anyone please make a heading for this template, I observed it hasn't one. Please add == Welcome! ==

Suggested edit
changeI suggest that the link to Special:WantedPages should be removed. It's utterly useless, as the first page is entirely made of French communes, and the first several pages are entirely populated by templates. I don't think these articles are the type that we should encourage new users to make. The list of WP:Requested pages is already on the template, and this list alone is enough. Edit request: parser function
changeHi! Can you please change "BASEPAGENAME" to "ROOTPAGENAME"? Some users start archives like this: "User talk:Example/Archives/Year", which in result shows "Hello, Example/Archives" instead of "Hello, Example". ✩ Dream Indigo ✩ 21:20, 26 June 2024 (UTC)
