Thann is a commune in Alsace in north-eastern France, in the Haut-Rhin department, of which it is a subprefecture. It is in the Grand Est region.

The commmune is in the historical and cultural region of Alsace. The name of the town comes from the German word tanne that means fir; there is a fir in the coat of arms of Thann.

Geography change

Thann is in the southwest of the Haut-Rhin department at the foot of the Vosges mountains, at the mouth of the valley of the Thur river. The Thur runs through the middle of the town.

It has an area of 12.5 km2 (4.8 sq mi).[1] Its average altitude is 625 m (2,051 ft); at the city hall, the altitude is 329 m (1,079 ft).[2]

Thann is at 121 km (75 mi) from Strasbourg, the regional capital; at 42 km (26 mi) from Colmar, the departamental capital; and at 21 km (13 mi) from Mulhouse.
