Tony Campolo

American sociologist and pastor (1935–2024)

Anthony Campolo (February 25, 1935 – November 19, 2024) was an American sociologist, Baptist pastor, author and public speaker. He was a spiritual advisor to U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Campolo was known as a leader of the evangelical left and was a major supporter of progressive thought in the evangelical community. He also became a leader of the Red-Letter Christian movement.[1][2]

Campolo was a popular commentator on religious, political, and social issues. He appeared on The Colbert Report, The Charlie Rose Show, Larry King Live, Nightline, Crossfire, Politically Incorrect and The Hour.[3]

Campolo was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He studied at Eastern University, at Palmer Theological Seminary and at Temple University.

In June 2020, Campolo had a stroke that paralyzed him.[4] He died on November 19, 2024 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania from heart failure at the age of 89.[5][6]
