Lola-Smallwood Cuevas is a current California State Senator.[1][2][3][4] She works to get rid of employment discrimination.[2]She tries to make equal jobs for immigrants.[3] Smallwood-Cuevas is a project director at UCLA Labor Center.[1][3][4] She helped black communities in the pandemic through employment struggles.[4] She is also very passionate about affordable healthcare and education funding.[3]
Family and Early Life
changeSmallwood-Cuevas was raised in a single parent household.[1][5] Her mother moved with her to California when she was young, in search of better jobs and schools.[1][2][3][5][6] Her mom is also a hardworking nurse.[1][2][3][5][6] Smallwood-Cuevas graduated from California State University at Hayward.[1][2][3][4][5][6] She now has one daughter and one son, along with a husband.[6]
Early Career
changeSmallwood-Cuevas started as a journalist for the Newspaper Guild.[1][2] She reported on the lives of working families.[1][2] She then worked as a researcher for United Service Workers West.[2] Smallwood-Cuevas co-founded the LA Black Worker Center.[1][2][3][5][6] She also works with the Center for the Advancement of Racial Equity at Work at UCLA.[3]
California State Senate
changeSmallwood Cuevas was elected a California State Senator on December 5th, 2022.[4] She is part of the democratic party. She represents district 28 in Los Angeles California. She got 99,479 votes out of 140,996 total votes.
