Gamle-stev have been found, that have an origin , from around the end of the 1200's.[ref 2]
Of the gamlestev that have not been lost, most of them are from Setesdal and Vest-Telemark .
Some gamle-stev might be part of folk songs, where the rest of the folk song has not been handed over, from generation to generation .
In Telemark , ny-stev have been replaced by rural folksongs , to a great degree. By contrast, ny-stev in Setesdal have held much of their ground.
- om-kved [5] are similar to refrains in ballads .<br.> ( Inn-stev [6], etter-stev[7], mellom-sleng [8] and etter-sleng [9] are different types of om-kved. )
- slåtte-stev [10] are instrumental dancetune songs
- herme-stev [11] contain apologetic proverbs (also known as Wellerisms ).
The people who can perform stev
changeA person who can perform a stev, is known as a kveder ( a type of artist ) . <br.> Of these artists, Aslak Brekke is possibly the most prominent , of those who who have been recorded .
A kveder from Setesdal, when performing stev, generally sings more slowly, than a kveder from Telemark. [ref 3] <br.> One reason for this, may be that the text of Setesdal stev, are often more meditative ( or elegiac ) . [ref 3]
