Dear Barliner,

I moved the page back to Douglas Hyde again. You can find my reasoning on its talk page. I invite you to discuss it there, before we move the page again, if at all. - Huji reply 15:54, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I never moved your page, but I was editing it when you moved mine, and have carried on editing. ---barliner--talk--contribs- 16:05, 3 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I gave you the incorrect link. Here is the correct one: link. - Huji reply 21:51, 4 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

redirect

If I'm not wrong, I noticed a few non-working redirects recently, and a few of them were created by you. I thought it'd be useful to remind you about what you might already know: The redirect command must be typed exactly as #REDIRECT Page Name. "REDIRECT" should be in upper case, and there should be no spaces betwee the # and the REDIRECT part.

With my best wishes, - Huji reply 07:26, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I always use the #R button from the editbox's toolbar. Although it uses local letters there is no problem (Template:Country date IRL for example. Before I started using the toolbar I found I sometimes typed out the command and did not put the article in linking-brackets. I thought I'd corrected them all immediately. Maybe this is what you've found ---barliner--talk--contribs- 13:22, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Anyways, your choice of using the #R button is a good one. You can also make the edittools visible to yourself (which appear "below" the edit box) and use the redirect command from there. Cheers, - Huji reply 13:23, 5 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

For your hard work...

Congratulations: You have been awarded a Barnstar!

To be the first to thank you for working so hard on contributing to templates and cleaning-up categorizes (and by beating me in edit counts with 3000+), I award with this barnstar for doing a good (actually a great) job! Template:Infobox Former Country

Why did this template need to be recreated? I had done a lot of changes so that it didn't create such specific categories. Also, why do we need the talk page imported from English Wikipedia? · Tygrrr·talk· 21:32, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was finding a problem, not using the new version. however as you have worked on the simple template I will revert to that version and afd the other pages. ---barliner--talk--contribs- 21:36, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't really have a problem with the /Blank and /Instructions pages, etc. I just don't think we need to bring over the talk page from English. What problem were you having with the older version? · Tygrrr·talk· 21:39, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Don't need all of the talk page but it does provide a very useful blank template. ---barliner--talk--contribs- 21:46, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think your solution of just leaving the blank part in the talk page is a good one. :-) · Tygrrr·talk· 21:51, 10 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I hope the new template makes up for me undoing your changes. After I have added it to the Irish article I have created I will try to add it to the other article in the former countries category, if there is enough information. ---barliner--talk--contribs- 09:25, 11 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

How do you make the Babel Boxes? I know about languages, but stuff like "Germanophile", where do you get it? Or do you have to make it yrself? LIAM / LIAM mailbox 11:40, 12 October 2007(UTC)

This one is on Barliner/userboxes/german. Link to it if you want to use it. I have a few more on en:wiki along with loads of other people in the Wikipedian userboxes category. Take a look. The category now has the code and instructions to create your own box. --`Barliner´******`talk´ 12:20, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

New categories

I've noticed you've created many new categories that only have one article in them or no articles in them. For example, Tomas Garrigue Masaryk would be the only article in the Category:Czechoslovakia--and that's okay (believe it or not)! :-) It's not necessary to create Category:Czechoslovak people just to put the Category:Czechoslovak politicians in it (which itself has only one article--Tomas Garrigue Masaryk). It's okay to just let the categories develop naturally and create them when needed instead of creating 2 or 3 categories just to place 1 article in the most specific category. The general rule is to have 2 or 3 (or even 4 or 5) articles that would go in the same category before creating it. The exception to this in my mind (and some may disagree with this) is for years, birth years, and death years. If you have any questions about categorizing, Creol and myself are pretty knowledgeable about this area of Wikipedia editing and would be willing to help you. Sorry for the long comment! :-) · Tygrrr·talk· 21:01, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for this. I left category poets pretty much alone, except for the Greek and English poets which already have sub-categories. I suppose I have been too tidy:) --`Barliner´******`talk´ 21:14, 12 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bringing this point up again. Saxe-Meiningen is a wonderful example of what not to do. Rather than copy/pasting the entire en:wp category list and then creating a host of single article categories, the category list should have been shortened to just the most useful ones. Several of the categories created there do not even have a main article (Category:States of the North German Confederation for example, when we do not have an article about the North German Confederation]]). Former states of Germany would have been an adequate category (and may be one of the valid cases of being both in the cat and subcat (Ernestine duchies) as both are appropriate - that would need to be commented in the cats section though so it isn't cleared out later).

Another issue with your new categories deals with the "combination categories". Combination categories are categories which replace needing two categories for one article (ie. using Category:Cycling in England in place of Cat:Cycling and Cat:Sports in England, Category:Brazilian athletes). When creating a sub-category joining two groups such as these, you need to make certain you place it in both (or more in some cases) categories above it as it is a member of each: Brazilian athletes are Athletes (Cat:Sportspeople by country) from Brazil (cat:Brazilian people). You have a tendency to just use one when creating new cats. An easy rule of thumb is to start by looking at the main category (say: Cat:Brazilian people). Looking at the entries, you see many athletes and see a need for the category. Both the main cat (Brazil people) and the reasoning for a new subcat (athletes) are valid categories for the new cat. -- Creol(talk) 15:25, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hello Barliner, I was wondering if I was able to renominate you for adminship. While I do know you had two pervious unsuccessful RfAs, one which was by me, I believe that you should try to run again since I strongly believe you have a better knowledge of simple wikipedia as well as having enough experience by now to qualify for sysophood. Edward VIII

The "Duke of Windsor" is a peerage title, not a name. In this case only one person ever held the title so it is commonly attributed to him, but had he had any male heirs, they too would have been the Duke of Windsor. His actual name is not his title. The en:wp page for DoW lists it as a title created for Prince Edward and then goes to link to Edward's page at en:Edward VIII of the United Kingdom. The interwiki links on that page (and on ours) show 25 other languages that also refer to him as Edward VIII (could be more of them, but only 25 are in romanized scripts and I don't read Arabic, Japanese or Chinese). Neither the fact that he abdicated nor his short reign changes the fact that his was King of Great Britain, Ireland ... and as this was his highest title, it is listed as his official one (although I did screw up the part of him being DoW before king instead of after king). -- Creol(talk) 19:59, 10 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Page protection

I set the protection for your user page to Sysop only for move and edits. This is fairly common for most admins user pages as we draw a lot of bullseyes from random IP vandals. If you chose to un-protect your user page and allow anyone to edit it that is your choice, but it may be a good idea to keep it protected. There realy is no reason for anyone other than you to be editing that page and there is certainly no reason for anyone other than a 'crat for moving it (as part of a name change) so keeping it protected just prevents the random admin bashers from playing games with the page. Our talk pages need be unprotected, but there is no reason for our user pages to be subject to the constant vandalism. You may also want to consider looking into adding variation of your name to the username black list so that it isn't used by the various (or more specific) admin username vandals (The McA vandal is well known for the random "Barliner love Shawn's sister", "Barliner love to block for no reason" name creations.. ) -- Creol(talk) 07:23, 17 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Simple English

What is the difference between regular english and simple english?-Razorflame 20:14, 23 November 2007 (UTC).Reply

To quote the guideline "Many readers of Simple English are people whose mother language is not English. Other readers may be young (they may be children) or have learning difficulties. The language is simple, but the ideas don't have to be." SEWP has many articles the same as ENWP, but presented in a simpler language. Abortion

Hello Barliner, I think the gist of the talk page was to use "unborn child" rather than fetus or embryo all the time (see Crossing the line between simple English to incorrect English on the discussion page). This is what I tried to point out in the message following the semi-protection of the article. I know abortion is a controversial discussion (in the United States, and elsewhere), that is part of why I semi-protected the article. It was my personal understanding that using unborn child was a term that was both simple, and something both sides could live with (i.e neutral). --Eptalon 12:37, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Unborn child" is a POV term, the arguments on the talk page show that. It is also undefined. Also the changes you made only changed the several reference to fetus at the beginning of the article, when the difference (as in spontaneous abortion" between foetus and embryo where most appropriate. -- Barliner  talk  12:45, 25 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sexual intercourse

He added it as a new language... -Razorflame 15:50, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

What is wrong with the english language. Even if the interwiki was a duplicate of one already there it does not deserve a warning about adding nonsense, so I removed the warning. -- Barliner  talk  15:54, 26 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

And are the articles that I've been adding from the English Wikipedia been helpful at least? -Razorflame 17:22, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

They have, but there is no need to remove every red link. But don't forget there are plenty of stubs here on SEWP that you might be able to improve too. :) -- Barliner  talk  17:29, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

That is true, and yes, I realize that there is no need to remove every red link. That's why I've undone my changes in removing red links to Valais.

Do you think it's alright to just directly port the articles from the en:WP over to here without simplifying it? I just realized that I kind of lack the ability to talk in simple terms. -Razorflame 17:31, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

No. Those articles could be marked with Template:Encopypaste and deleted. Change the articles into Simple English. If your changes are not enough another editor will be able to simplify even more. And of course your proficiency will improve too. -- Barliner  talk  17:38, 27 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
