José Cordero change

Hi Chen. Could you tell me which account or IP created José Cordero today, please? Thanks, Sam Sailor (talk) 17:05, 27 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

My note in the LTA file says that Macdonald-ross semi'ed the title on 25 March. I'd recommend you fully salt the title, speaking from a couple of years experience with Jose cross-wiki. Sam Sailor (talk) 17:10, 27 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Today's creation was by 186.91.220.160, which matches the /16 entry in your LTA file. The protection of this particular title expired 3 days ago. There are also some other variations floating around on-wiki with varying protection expiry, but I have added an entry to the title blacklist, which should hopefully stop most variations that have appeared on this wiki. Chenzw  Talk  17:42, 27 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Oh, now that I look at the LTA page again, the existing blacklist entry may not be sufficient to stop him, if he is persistent. I will work on an abuse filter instead, which has a more powerful character normalization capability. Chenzw  Talk  17:50, 27 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
This regex: .*R[аàâáaä]f[аàâáaä][еèëêée]l.*C[öôòóoo0]rd[еèëêée]r[öôòóoo0].*S[аàâáaä]nch[еèëêée]z.* used in the Titleblacklist on Spanish W. may have slowed him down. Inserted 19 April, his only creation on es.w since has been es:Rafael Cordero.
But tell me, with your years of experience, has this case been going on for so long (between four and five years now) that it's time to say "enough is enough" and ask for a global Titleblacklist entry or a global filter in I assume Meta:Special:AbuseFilter? Sam Sailor (talk) 09:59, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
I've added that regex here btw. The global location should you choose to go that route would be m:Title blacklist. -DJSasso (talk) 12:06, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
@Sam Sailor: I would say that this is probably a suitable candidate for inclusion on the global title blacklist/global abuse filters, but it is up to meta sysops/stewards to make the final decision. They will have more experience with such related crosswiki abuse (as compared to me). At this point, I believe that using the abuse filter will be more effective. If eswiki would like to test it out in lieu of their title blacklist entry, please have an eswiki sysop contact me.
@Djsasso: can I ask that you remove the entry from the title blacklist? I also added that a while ago, but reverted it because these edits are now covered by Special:AbuseFilter/65, which catches more variations of the offending title(s) (it is still possible to circumvent the existing entry on the title blacklist, and some of the titles mentioned on this LTA page will slip through the blacklist entry). Also, I would like to have the attempts be logged in the abuse filter, as such information may be useful if someone does decide to push for global enforcement. Chenzw  Talk  17:50, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
The one I added is actually completely different than the one you added. But if you want to remove it go ahead. -DJSasso (talk) 18:30, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your advice. I'll ping Spanish admin Taichi here, and will drop him a note on es:w in case he hasn't cross-wiki notification turned on. Would you trust me enough to share filter 65 via email so I can learn more? I'm aware of WP:PRIVATEFILTER. Sam Sailor (talk) 08:42, 29 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Certainly. I will be sending you an email later on, with the details. Chenzw  Talk  13:55, 29 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I come from es.wikipedia. The "Rafael Cordero" case is heavy, because he evades the filters as IP or registered user. But, recently I added the filter using all the acutes. Now, he was forced to use another combinations as "Rafael Sanchez", "Cordero Sanchez", etc. He is very persistent. --Taichi (talk) 15:29, 29 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I have sent emails to both you and Sam Sailor. Please feel free to let me know if there are more questions regarding the filter. Just want to add on that you might want to enable the filter locally first, and monitor the abuse log, before proposing this as a global filter. Chenzw  Talk  16:29, 29 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the email. I will await what results the abuse logs give us, see how many articles are created on other Wikipedias the coming months, and liaise with you and Taichi before bringing the matter up on Meta. Again, thank you for your help. Sam Sailor (talk) 14:14, 30 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
HI Chenzw, I saw the email. It's ok, because my kwnoledge about filters is too basic. Thanks. --Taichi (talk) 03:50, 1 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

*Maybe* false positive? change

I'm not sure. This is what I mean. Constructive or not? Computer Fizz (talk) 01:11, 3 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

I would rather not register that particular revert as a false positive. Chenzw  Talk  03:02, 3 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Typo fixing change

Hey, thanks for all the typo fixing! So is AWB's typo fixing function working again? It wasn't for a while. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:36, 1 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Yup, it's back now. Based on the pages I have encountered so far, there is a widespread issue on-wiki pertaining to the use of hyphens vs. endashes, 1900s vs. 1900's, and the lack of commas after "However" and "Therefore" (and significantly less "real" spelling mistakes). Chenzw  Talk  09:49, 1 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes, many of our editors are grammatically challenged. I have to admit, hyphens and dashes are not my strongest points when it comes to grammar. I should really read up on them, since my volunteer job is being an English tutor! When I get back on my laptop, I'll refresh my memory on how to use the typo fixing function and I'll do some, too (unless you especially want to do them yourself). --Auntof6 (talk) 09:56, 1 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Please do! I was using AWB's database dump scanner, and by the time it scanned around 14% of the dump, there were 2000+ articles with potential typos! This will need more than one editor to go through. Chenzw  Talk  10:04, 1 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Are you using the TypoScan plugin, or just loading random or new articles to work on? When I asked my question, I was thinking of the plugin. I couldn't get the plugin to work, but I can just load some random pages. --Auntof6 (talk) 03:33, 2 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Nope, I downloaded a copy of pages-articles.xml from dumps.wikimedia.org instead, then used the database scanner to generate the page list. Isn't TypoScan enwiki-exclusive? Chenzw  Talk  03:59, 2 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Ah. I think that's beyond my technical expertise. I tried just loading random pages, but I wasn't getting much in the way of typos/grammar that needed correcting.
TypoScan may well be enwiki-exclusive; that would certainly explain why I never got it to work for Simple. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:41, 2 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
If you want to, I have generated the list of articles with potential typos: [1]. Each part consists of 400 articles. They can be used in conjunction with the "Text file (UTF-8)" source in AWB. I definitely won't be able to handle them all myself, considering that there are 5000+ such articles. Chenzw  Talk  07:00, 2 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I will definitely use those -- thanks! It will be tomorrow afternoon before I can get back to them (it's about 12:30 am here right now). Should I let you know which one(s) I do so that we don't duplicate effort? --Auntof6 (talk) 07:31, 2 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
You could tell me now if you have decided on which parts to process, but it doesn't really matter, actually. The article titles are sorted in alphabetical order, so it would be easy to see which part(s) you are working on. Chenzw  Talk  07:34, 2 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
It looked like you were working toward the end of the alphabet, so I've started with the first one. I notice it's changing "present day" to "present-day". That's a correct spelling, but I seem to remember a discussion about how "present-day Foo" is not the same as "the area that is now Foo". That's not something typo fixing can take care of, but probably something we should address sometime. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:09, 5 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
I've finished processing the first one and will start on the second one next time I work on it. If I don't see fixes being made, I'll assume you already did that one and try another. In the first one, there were some that had no fixes made, but most had some. --Auntof6 (talk) 22:36, 6 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why are you deleting all articles? Sarojupreti (talk) 04:31, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Articles cannot be copied and pasted from the English Wikipedia. Copy-pasted articles will be deleted. Chenzw  Talk  04:43, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) Also, Sarojupreti, articles need to show that the subject is notable. That's hard to do with upcoming movies. If notability is not shown, articles can be deleted for that reason, too. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:23, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
But That's Real Articles.. Sarojupreti (talk) 05:26, 25 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

You missed a spot. change

You may have did this on purpose, but the title of the suppressed post on ANI is visible in the edit summary. Computer Fizz (talk) 23:08, 30 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

That was intended. I try to revdel as little information as possible. In this case, only the content of the edit(s) were blatantly disruptive/attacked another editor. Chenzw  Talk  00:57, 31 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
Okay, thanks. Just wanted to be sure :) Computer Fizz (talk) 04:32, 31 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
