Proposed merge from Category:Bands change

I'm not seeing a meaningful difference between Category:Bands and Category:Musical groups (this category). I'm thinking of merging them into Category:Musical groups. Please discuss. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:51, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Nothing. I believe bands was the old way en used to categorize these things and then later switched to musical groups. So we have copy pastes of both. I would merge bands here and redirect to match en. As musical groups is a bit more universal a term. -DJSasso (talk) 11:25, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Bands are a subset of musical groups. The key separators for groups would tend to be instruments and size since the other main sub-sets would be orchestras and vocal groups. Bands are a relatively distinct group of musical ensembles normally including a small number of musicians with one or more vocalists. By comparison, orchestras have a large number of musicians with vocalists and singing groups have multiple vocalists with no musicians (they often have musicians but these are rarely counted as part of the group). Exceptions do, of course exist (Parliament Funkadelic is a huge group by band standards, some orchestra use singers) but the general concept and style of the performance tend to be consistant within the group. Think AC/DC vs One Direction vs the London Philharmonic. Three distinctly different styles of musical groups. (Concert bands (orchestra) and marching bands (brass/percussion only orchestra that walks) while named bands just get confusing to deal with.. )--Creol(talk) 13:04, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Orchestras are called bands where I am from and as far as I know are often called that around most of North America at least. I wouldn't say size is a factor. I had considered that myself when I answered but I do believe they are essentially the same thing. While there are different sub-types of bands. ie Rock Band, Concert Band, Marching Band etc. Even vocal only groups are often called bands. But in the end they are all musical groups. -DJSasso (talk) 13:22, 3 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Comments: I envision bands as marching bands, military bands, big (swing) bands as "bands"; with a large ensenble of multiple instruments. Ironically when I looked up Marching band, it is categorized under both musical groups and bands. To me, musical groups are like small combos or quintets with a few members sitting noodling on a saxophone and a snare drum with a brush. (My POV, of course...). On the other hand, I never say I am going to the ampitheatre to see the musical group Nine Inch Nails, which in our article is identified as an industrial metal band. Thirdly, what do we do with all the articles that have a "band" signifier, such as Bad Brains (band) that have the categories "Reggae bands" and "American punk band"s? Sorry for the ramble. A band is larger than a small group (such as a quartet), and a less formal term than orchestra. Groups of three, four or five musicians would almost never be described as bands. "Musical groups" is of course open to a much wider interpretation, and so it's probably right for it to be at a higher level in the hierarchy. Therefore, I would not merge. Groups of that size are frequently called bands -- for example, musical groups who play rock and roll are called rock bands, as Fylbecatulous said. Maybe we can have categories like "Rock bands", but leave them underneath Category:Musical groups without putting them under a separate "Bands" category. In other words, any category with the word "bands" in the name would need to be qualified (rock bands, marching bands, mariachi bands, etc.). Just because they are commonly called "bands" doesn't mean we need a separate "bands" category. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:23, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes there are lots and lots of groups of only 3 musicians that are called bands. Heck I know of some rock bands and country bands who only have 2 members. Bands are definitely not restricted to just large or small amounts. I think for clarity we should just redirect like en.wiki does. Part of me thinks this might be another regional thing. -DJSasso (talk) 14:05, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Return to "Musical groups" page.
