Lack of quality
changeI see this page was written by someone who doesn't really understand botany, so I'm going to revise it substantially. Meanwhile, check the Amazon rainforest for a better account. Macdonald-ross (talk) 06:22, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
Oxygen turnover
changeWell, intuitively I don't believe 40% oxygen "production", but I can't read the page 23 reference in the text. There are several issues:
- How were the estimates arrived at? Are there any satisfactory empirical figures, or is it all guesswork?
- What is the contribution of photosynthesizing in the world's oceans? All those algal blooms are photosynthetic organisms.
- The correct term is "oxygen turnover" since the balance between production and conversion to CO2 is about level: "On a global scale, long-term fluxes are approximately in balance, so that an undisturbed rainforest would have a small net impact on atmospheric carbon dioxide levels" [En wiki]. I believe this is right, though the reference is entirely about research to CO2, the two molecules are linked by the photosynthetic cycle.
- I note En wiki gives 28% with a different reference. Their reference in support of this is rubbish: it is a website which does not cite its source. But I believe it is nearer the mark than our 40%. I just find it difficult to believe that the total "production" of O2 by all oceans, plus crops, plus forests in the temperate and palaearctic zones, plus ultraviolet cracking of H2O in the higher atmosphere is only 60%.
- Facts, that's what we need. In the absence of reliable references, I am going to take the precise figure out, and write something less definitive. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:07, 6 February 2014 (UTC)
- @Macdonald-ross: There's a national geographic article: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/article/why-amazon-doesnt-produce-20-percent-worlds-oxygen It says it's about 34% on land, which works out to about 19% including oceans. That's only tropical rainforests. And the net O2 production is about zero. Lights and freedom (talk) 20:45, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
GA?
changeI've always liked the page, but the queries above seem to rule it out as a GA at present. Macdonald-ross (talk) 12:49, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

Rainforest in other climates?
changeThere also seem to be forests, which meet most of the criteria, but which are in temperate regions; yearly maximum temperature is usually lower, they may be high up in the mountains, so there may be snow for parts (or almost all?) of the year. Enwp has an article at :en:Temperate rainforest there's also :en:Old-growth forest where the definition is even wider. I do not know if these are relevant, and should be mentioned for the article. - We do have temperate rain forest. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:06, 9 March 2023 (UTC)
A better source, giving more specific details

Renaming
changeDiscussion decided that the content of the page "Rainforest" was better explained as "tropical rainforest" as opposed to "temperate rainforest" (we also have a short page under the latter title). Macdonald-ross (talk) 15:01, 17 May 2023 (UTC)
