Early Life:
changeHamrock grew up in La Habra Heights. [1] 20 miles from the coast. [1] The First time Hamrock saw someone surfing was when she was six. [1] It was on tv and she said, ‘It touched my heart.’ [1] At age 13 she rode her first wave in Hawaii, with her grandmother watching. [1] At age 16, when she got her license to drive, she would make trips to the coast. [1] She would ride waves even though the men were less than welcoming.[1] "Surfing has taught me how to deal with all kinds of problems," Hamrock says. "The ocean has moods, just like people. It has calm and stormy days, just like life." She pauses. "But the main thing you learn from surfing is how to hold your breath—a long time." [1] However she only started to learn more about surfing in 1976 as a senior at La Serna High in Whittier, CA. [1] She would get rides from Marty Hamrock, who she married in 1979. [1] Hamrock finally got serious about surfing in 1990, where she began winning competitions. [1] Over the years, Hamrock created a name for herself. [1] ‘Danger Women,’ because she surfs extremely dangerous waves. [2]
Awards:
changeDuring the mid-90’s Hamrock had six U.S. titles. [2] Four shortboards through 1993-96 and two longboards in 1995-96. [2] When Hamrock went pro in 1998, she placed third in the Women’s Longboard World Championship in 1999. [2] Fifth in 2000 and won the Women’s Longboard World Champion in 2002. [2] In 2005 she was runner-up at the XXL Big Wave Awards. [2]
