The winner this Translation of the week is

Please be bold and help translate this article!

Christmas seals are adhesive labels that are similar in appearance to postage stamps that are sold then affixed to mail during the Christmas season to raise funds and awareness for charitable programs. Christmas seals have become particularly associated with lung diseases such as tuberculosis, and with child welfare in general. They were first issued in Denmark beginning in 1904, with Sweden and Iceland following with issues that same year. Thereafter the use of Christmas seals proved to be popular and spread quickly around the world, with 130 countries producing their own issues.

Things I found in articles you created

change

I randomly picked some of the articles you created to look at. Here are some things I found. Some of them were later fixed by other editors, but I was looking at the articles as you created them.

Bryn Mawr College

  • minimal stub (later editors expanded)
  • not categorized (later editors categorized)

World Archery:

  • what does "the lead of the sport of archery" mean?
  • last sentence should be divided into 2, so that each sentence has only one subject/verb
  • was in categories "Sports" and "Archery"; Sports category not needed because archery is already under that one

List of cryptids

  • has at least one redlinked template. If you ever want a template imported, just ask at the admins' noticeboard.
  • complex words in headings (we're not supposed to link words in headings, but they can be either explained or changed to simpler words)

Ernest Saunders

  • use of abbreviation UK: better to spell out "United Kingdom"
  • complex words: attempted, subsequently
  • "thought to have" would be simpler than "thought to be suffering from"
  • use of "as" to mean "because" -- "as" has other meanings, so just use "because"
  • the sentence beginning "He was sentenced" would be better divided into two
  • needs a stub template
  • needs more categories
  • needs more internal links

By the way, are you familiar with what a subject and verb are in sentences? If not, let me know and I'll explain because that's important in using simple language.

Feel free to ask any questions you have about any of this. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:03, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Auntof6, Generally i know what a subject and verb are but are they different here? — Cactus🌵 spiky 09:47, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
No, they aren't different here. It's just important to know about because there should usually be only one subject/verb per sentence in simple language. I only asked because I don't know how much people know about that kind of grammar stuff. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:50, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Auntof6, alright — Cactus🌵 spiky 09:55, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Auntof6, Can you import Template:Skeptoid from en? — Cactus🌵 spiky 10:00, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
and i dont understand the second point in List of cryptids — Cactus🌵 spiky 10:01, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
There are some complex words in the headings in the cryptids article. Sometimes we deal with complex words by linking them, if we have an article for them. However, when those words are in a heading, we can't because we aren't supposed to link anything in a heading. Make sense? -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:19, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Not yet, can you show some examples? Cactus🌵 spiky 09:15, 15 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
how do you elaborate the title? Cactus🌵 spiky 09:25, 15 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I don't know what you mean. -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:01, 15 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6 Wait nevermind. I understood from the example Cactus🌵 spiky 22:42, 15 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
The words aquatic, terrestrial, and hominid are complex. -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:01, 15 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6 I tried my best to simplify Cactus🌵 spiky 06:50, 16 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6 what do u think? Cactus🌵 spiky 03:35, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
It looks like BRPever imported the template already. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:18, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Auntof6, Improved all the articles — Cactus🌵 spiky 10:06, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Archery:
  • "assembly of archery" doesn't make sense, either. Instead, you could say it's the organization that controls the sport of archery.
Ernest Saunders:
  • Good job. I made one more change -- I may not have explained one of the items very well.
Are you starting to get a feel for what is needed? It takes time for that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:28, 14 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I could do with more feedback Cactus🌵 spiky 09:14, 15 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
So long as you genuinely want some feedback, I'd love to be able to help you with that request. Ping me when you next create an article and I'm happy to give you some honest feedback Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:37, 15 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
I have many articles still needing feedback. Such as Pokémon Sword and Shield: The Crown Tundra. Cactus🌵 spiky 06:37, 16 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Lee Vilenski I created Murder of Will Sherod Cactus🌵 spiky 04:10, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Why is this person notable? This seems to be an almost exact copy of the enwiki version, which also doesn't really explain why we have an article on them. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:58, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Lee Vilenski I am working on that Cactus🌵 spiky 22:20, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Audiophile terminology

change
Hello, WP:AQD says A4 is about

people, groups, companies, products, services or websites that do not claim to be notable

Audiophile terminology is an article about words, so this is not about people, groups, companies, products, services or websites. Please focus on people, groups, companies, products, services or websites when tagging QD A4. Thank you for your contributions. MathXplore (talk) 08:28, 17 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@MathXplore But is the topic notable though? Cactus🌵 spiky 08:29, 17 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Notability of subjects that are not people, groups, companies, products, services or websites can be discussed at RFDs. MathXplore (talk) 08:30, 17 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

RFD on Joanna Modes

change

I am working on cleaning up this RFD. Please don't edit it. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:17, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Auntof6 Oh sorry. Cactus🌵 spiky 04:22, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you see something like that in the future, please merge the misplaced entries into the correct section so that everything is in chronological order. Otherwise, it's harder for the closing admin to evaluate everything. That's part of what I was doing; it was a big job, so don't feel you have to do it just because you see the problem. :) --Auntof6 (talk) 05:03, 19 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia translation of the week: 2025-04

change

The 2010 Nahorno karabakh war were a series of exchanges of gunfire that took place on February 18 on the line of contact dividing Azerbaijani and the Karabakh Armenian military forces. Azerbaijan accused the Armenian forces of firing on the Azerbaijani positions near Tap Qaraqoyunlu, Qızıloba, Qapanlı, Yusifcanlı and Cavahirli villages, as well as in uplands of Agdam Rayon with small arms fire including snipers. As a result, three Azerbaijani soldiers were killed and one wounded.

Revert

change

Hello. What is your rationale for this revert? My edit was simply fixing formatting for readability as the references generated due to <references/> were inlined in the previous section, at the end of which I appropriately put <references/>. Svartava (talk) 06:08, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

hi, that's not a article page, and is a talk page of and editor. Thus, it does not require any reference template. Cactus🌵 spiky 06:29, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
So should all references from all sections of the page be listed combined at the bottom? I thought it is good for readability if references made in a particular section are shown at the end of that section only. Svartava (talk) 06:44, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
There are no references on the page either Cactus🌵 spiky 07:07, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
There are, in the section User talk:Fr33kman#Opinion polling for the 2028 Philippine presidential election 2. Svartava (talk) 07:12, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Ask fr33kman if its okay first. Cactus🌵 spiky 07:13, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Fr33kman, requesting you to comment. I did the edit because it is the general convention I have seen on other wikis on talk pages and project discussion pages. @Cactusisme, I accept that I can make mistakes, but I do not appreciate your condescending replies here, especially There are no references on the page either which is completely misleading and shows that you don't know what you are doing and you didn't even bother to understand my reason for the edit properly. Since my edit was made in good faith, it is bad practice to revert it without an explanation at the minimum, and even worse practice to not provide a proper reason for the revert when asked on the talk page. Svartava (talk) 07:23, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Relax, I did not mean to be rude. Cactus🌵 spiky 07:26, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
No issues - thanks for clarifying. Svartava (talk) 10:02, 20 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
