Hello Piedude, and Welcome to the Simple English Wikipedia!

Thanks for your recent changes to the AFL page. There's not many people interested in writing about Aussie rules footy on the Simple wiki. You will need to read the stuff below so that you can make good changes. Please contact me if you ever need help or have a question.

Allow me to give you a quick tour of Wikipedia:

Simple English

This is the Simple English wikipedia, like the ordinary English one but using words that are easy to understand. Try to use words that are on this list.

Simple English is useful for people who are learning English and also children.

Not all editors here use English as their first language, so some may struggle to understand more complex sentences. You should be fine when on talk pages though.

Editing articles

If you see an article you wish to edit, click "change this page" at the top or "[change]" at the side. There are certain rules you should follow when writing to an article:

 • Link to other articles: You should include a link to other articles to explain what you mean. If you wanted to link to the Communism article for example, you would type Communism
 • Sometimes though, you might want the link to say something else. Like this. That will still link to the same article, as above, Communism. What you do here is create a piped link by typing this
 • Next you may want to make text italic or bold. To do this type two apostrophes where you want italics to start, like this: This is all in italic text and for bold it is three apostrophes like this: This is bold text
 • Change Summary: When you make a change, put a short description of what you have done in the Change Summary box under the edit window. For example you might say "made a link to Communism" or "added information on Karl Marx" or "fixed spelling mistake."

Templates

If your article is quite short, add Stub at the end. If it is an article about a place use geo-stub. If it is about a person you can use bio-stub.

Inter-Wiki Links

Usually it is a good idea to add a link to the same article in another language. To do this, type: en:Communism - Make sure the article is the same name on the other language. So you would go to the English.wikipedia version and find the article there.

Categories

To make sure we can store and find all the articles, it is a good idea to put them all into categories. To do this, just type and it will slot your article into the Politics category, which you can view here.

 • If you need any other help at all, do not hesitate to ask. You can leave a message for me

Piedude's sandbox

change

Hi Piedude, I thought you must be an Aussie. I have made you your very own sandbox. This is a page that you can use to try all sorts of things out. It looks and acts like a normal wiki page, but no one else will delete or change things in your sandbox. I put a link to the sandbox on your userpage.

Use the sandbox to do things like - write an article about the new teams. When you have finished it, you can cut and paste it into the main pages. But while it is in your sandbox it is safe from other editors. Go and have a play! Peterdownunder (talk) 03:41, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good morning Piedude. I see you are learning Japanese; the subject line says "good morning". If there's anything you ever need, there are many users on here that would be happy to help. If you just want to chat with other wikipedians on simple, you might want to try our IRC channel #wikipedia-simple on Freenode. All the best! EhJJTALK 04:27, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hey, I made a minor change to your user page to fix some minor layout problems ([1]); I hope you don't mind. EhJJTALK 14:13, 29 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pictures

change

G'day Piedude. I saw on your User page you would like to have a photo of Manchester United and the Socceroos. This is how you can do it.

1. Go to the Wikimedia Commons page [2] 2. Type in a search word for the picture you would like, eg socceroos. 3. When you find the right photo, write down it's file name. 4. Paste this piece of code onto your page: [[Image:picture.jpg|thumb|[width in number of pixels]px|right|Insert caption here]] 5. Replace "picture.jpg" with the exact file name of the photo you have found. 6. Put in a number for the width in pixels, I usually use 220. 7. Replace "insert caption here" with a caption for your photo 8. Save the page and picture should appear. 9. Practice in your sandbox to see if it works.

Userboxes

change

Hi Piedude, here is some information that might help you make a Userbox. I have put in a User box that I have made about playing the flute. The code for this box looks like this:

<div style="float:left;border:solid #000 1px;margin:1px;"> {| cellspacing="0" style="width:238px;background:blue;" | style="width:45px;height:45px;background:blue;text-align:center;font-size:14pt;" | | style="font-size:8pt;padding:4pt;line-height:1.25em;color:white;" | This user can play the <font color="white">flute</font>! |} </div>

It makes a box that looks like this:

This user can play the flute!

Paste the code into your sandbox and try changing a few things to see how it works. You should be easily able to make one that says "This user supports the Socceroos" with a picture of a soccerball. When it looks good in the sandbox, paste it onto your User page. Have fun. Peterdownunder (talk) 02:08, 16 May 2009 (UTC)Reply
