change- September 5: In the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert E. Lee invades Maryland, leading 55,000 soldiers from the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. They cross the Potomac River at White's Ford near Leesburg, Virginia. This is the Confederacy's first invasion of the North.[1]
