change- 9 July – Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad officially launched the first Malaysian car, the Proton Saga.[1]
- 3 August – Mahathir and his wife, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, drove across the Penang Bridge in a red Proton Saga, one month before it opened to the public.[1]
- 14 September – The Penang Bridge officially opened to cars.[2]
