Noticeboard

A new star has is rising in the East. 16 year old Yifan Hou has produced a remarkable tournament result at Gibraltar. If you buy just one reference work on chess, it should be this: Hooper, David and Whyld, Kenneth 1992. The Oxford companion to chess. 2nd ed, Oxford University Press. ISBN 0-19-866164-9

Links

When you want to link to a chess term use the page List of chess terms. It has been put up to avoid lots of v. short pages on single terms. So to link to "promotion" write List of chess terms#P|promotion. Then promotion delivers you to the initial letter on that page. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:24, 21 May 2010 (UTC)

Okay. Seems reasonable. BTW, good job with the page Macdonald. Maybe we can propose it for GA soon? Its will written, some pics, and refs. Overall, a very stable article. I'll do a few tweaks with it and maybe we may propose it soon, if no one objects. I know it needs a bit more work, but its certainly something to think about. Redirects

I believe we should start redirecting pages to List of chess terms. For example, someone may see that we don't have an article for backward pawn, however all the info about backward pawns is in List of chess terms. So to avoid a bunch of meaningless stubs, I believe this would be a smart choice of action. However, I wanted to get the community's opinion as well. ♠ I-on (talk) ♣ 12:28, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, I'm already on board! (see above). Possibly you meant "let's take the entries in 'List of chess terms' which don't have substantive pages, and set them up as redirect pages to 'List of chess terms'. That would be OK. Titles

The titles of pages are mostly moving over to: second and subsequent words in lower case unless it is a proper noun. So I think chess should follow. It just means that the second word in a title changes changes from, for example, 'Sicilian Defence' to 'Sicilian defence'. The second word is just an adjective. Oh, I see it needs another step. Where the title is a double word, as in Queen's Indian defence, the bit which is clearly adjectival is the last word. Queen's Gambit Declined is all one title because it is the name of a distinct variation. Macdonald-ross (talk) 16:01, 21 September 2014 (UTC)

An example: the "Pirc defence" is usually called "the Pirc": defence/defense is just an adjective, not part of the title.
With the Queen's Gambit, the gambit is part of the name because it signifies the move 2.c4, without which it would not be a gambit. OK? Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:21, 24 January 2016 (UTC)
