Removing T:DYK/N

Bluegoblin, I'm going to have to challenge your removal of T:DYK/N. The next update is used to preview the hooks before it reaches T:DYK. I've noticed many problems with hooks before they reached the next update and T:DYK. Anyone can edit the T:DYK, and some people don't know the proper formatting than others. The more experienced ones should be making sure everything is correct in the next update. Also, if there is no next update, we'd be updating T:DYK in one edit without any preview on the hooks. If we have T:DYK/N, we could add hooks one-by-one since some people might not have the time to do everything in one edit. The hooks might be in a bad order (related hooks next o eachother) which cannot be previewed at T:TDYK. That is what T:DYK/N is for. Everything was going well with T:DYK/N with no problems, and without T:DYK/N, it is just going to be harder is make sure everything is correctly formatted before it hits the Main Page. I suggest adding back T:DYK/N to the DYKbox using it once again. – RyanCross (talk) 19:45, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree, Ryan.--   ChristianMan16  19:53, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
after c/cRyan, it has been removed as it is overcomplicating the process. We are too much like en-wp. The whole process was fine when it was userspaced. All we need is for the hooks is to keep them on Template talk until there are say 5 ready for the next update, and then put them straight on the page. The people who update it should know how to use the preview button... BG7even 19:54, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
What if they don't know the correct way to format the hooks even with directions? I've noticed many users don't properly format, wikify, etc. the hooks. This is a problem when it hits the Main Page. If we had T:DYK/N, we could fix the problem. People who do know how to format them might be inactive or might not br around at the time. We only copied T:DYK/N as benifiting as, IMO. No problems with having it already like I said, and everything was going smoothly. – RyanCross (talk) 20:00, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I also think it should be put back on as it sometimes gets confusing when their are a mixture of done/not done/semi done on the noms page. FSM Noodly? 20:03, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
after c/c Well, for starters, i think everyone at DYK knows what they are doing - certainly those reviewing do. The hooks would also be at T:TDYK for longer, so people can cast an eye over them there to check they are formatted. Sorry Ryan, but i've spoken with many people, who may or may not add their opinions, who all agree that it is now way to complicated, since you got involved. We are a small community - nothing like en - and so we dont need to copy their style. Just because you want to be an en admin, does not mean en has to be bought here... BG7even 20:07, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Also, FSM: not done should be removed almost immediately, semi will hopefully be seen to, indeed the reviewer can often see to it, and the dones well.... BG7even 20:07, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
You say you have discussed this with many people... where? I don't see any discussion of this anywhere. – RyanCross (talk) 20:12, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Per my comments on Simple Talk, I disagree with not having the next update. Next update allows one to format the noms and review for balance before updating the template which goes to the main page. It clears the nominations of those that have been accepted and leaves only those that are being actively discussed.
I am concerned that you claim to have spoken to "many people" but you haven't spoken to those who nominated for this project as active participants at Wikipedia:Did you know#DYK participants. Three of those participants were not consulted and object here - there are only 5 nominated participants other than yourself - this seems a grave discourtesy to those working collaboratively on the new project. --Matilda (talk) 03:16, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • 1 - you haven't replied to my point above!? Who did you discuss with if not the project participants?
  • 2 - with ref to your comments on my talk page:
Matilda: Just a tip with DYK, there is no need to re-review nominations that are a no unless the author has criticised or changed or whatever. Secondly, as per this diff, we do not allow stub articles on DYK, per Template:Did you know. This is why it requires expansion. Thanks, BG7even 10:47, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
the author had not made any substantive changes to WWE - or even effectively commented. The sources are not "reliable". The reader would not find the fact in the article unless they knew to unhide the box.
note as per my comments Big Mac Index was incorrectly tagged as a stub and was longer than the en DYK word limit. --Matilda (talk) 20:19, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hello,
The people I spoke to are (or were) planning on raising their comments. As for the helpers, I was being bold and putting into place WP:IAR. Once there was objections I stopped and took it to a discussion, if you read my ST comments you'll see I agreed in my latest post.
As for DYK, I was referring to neither of those hooks actually, the one i was reffering to was:

* ...that Wesfarmers is Australia's biggest retailer? -- Da Punk '95 talk 06:31, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, this article is a stub and has just one sentence. Please read the DYK criteria. Thanks, BG7even 17:05, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

the fact wasn't supported by more recent reliable sources - ie Woolworths is bigger. Moreover we already have a DYK fact for Woolworths. As per BG7 this stub needs expanding and really you need to find a more interesting hook. --Matilda (talk) 23:57, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks,
BG7even 20:31, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

re Wesfarmers DYK feedback

Your criticism that it was merely a stub wasn't useful - it was more germane that the fact was wrong! When reviewing DYK please check the sources and ensure they are reliable and current. If you don't do this we will lose credibility as failing to uphold Wikipedia:Verifiability. So I disagree as to whether a 2nd reviewer was needed in this case - DaPunk95 needed the feedback he had got it wrong as well as it being too short. Your comments were ambiguous- a diff would have clarified what it was you were commenting on and be more helpful in future.--Matilda (talk) 19:36, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

And the way you had put it, made it feel like it was a PA towards me. --  Da Punk '95  talk  19:39, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Matilda: I only look for the first criteria it fails, as I do at en. I've never been criticised there for doing that way. If the article isn't long enough, there's no point looking at the ref imho.
Da Punk: I have to disagree there: there was nothing wrong with the way Matilda worded it.
Thanks!
BG7even 19:41, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

AWB

Please be careful when using AWB, and check every edit. See here. Of the three changes you made, the first one helped it make more sense, but really needed the 'the's both being taken out. The second one (removing the stub) was wrong, as although it was a long page, it still doesn't tell you any thing about the games - it's all a table. And lastly, we tend to leave a gap between {{FA}} links and the actual interwikis. You are not a bot and are responsible for your edits - please check them. Thanks - tholly --Talk-- 11:11, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Another bad edit - the categories go below the stubs as you should know, and as we don't have dated cats for cleanup tags, that wasn't needed, but i have left as it is a reference for people editing. I admit that although I have just seen this edit, and it was before my first warning, so I won't remove you AWB access, but please be careful, or your the access will be removed. These are the only two AWB edits of yours I've seen so far, I hope the rest are better... - tholly --Talk-- 11:18, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Point taken with the first one, but the second one corrected an error by Gwib with the cateogories. I suggest you also check the edits before complaining!!! AWB automatically adds the dated tags, unless you want me to remove every single one and recode AWB, I suggest we live with it - as you say it can help editors out for reference. Thanks, BG7even 11:56, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just so you know, you edited somebody's comment with this change made with AWB. Please do not correct typos in other people's comments next time. Thanks, Malinaccier (talk) 14:46, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

techno

you reverted an edit. Please lets be clear that the following statement is false: "D.J. Ben Russell is generally thought to be the founder of Techno music. He did not continue with Techno, but many bands picked up the beat and caused Techno to be what it is today." It should therefore not be included in the article. If you have any further doubts go to and confirm the complete absence of one D.J Ben Russell. Someone was obviously trying to do a bit of PR. 86.12.244.249 (talk) 18:39, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bot

Could you get your bot to add {{Linkin Park}} to all articles in Category:Linkin Park that don't already have it please? Cheers. FSM Noodly? 20:49, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I can... tomorrow if thats ok as I have to fly now. Thanks, BG7even 20:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm about to start the run now. Would you like the bot with the flag or the bot without the flag? BG7even 09:16, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done. I also cleaned up the articles. If you need it again in future, just ask! Thanks, BG7even 13:43, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

GoblinBot2

Goblin2 needs to be shut done. The bot is removing stub tags from one and two sentence articles, tagging articles with templates which do not exist here and tagging other articles with parameters for templates which those templates do not use. -- Creol(talk) 09:56, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I know i know i know ;). I just noticed it, its been screwing up stub tags. I'm reverting now and turning that option off. BG7even 09:57, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I know!!! ^^ I'm undoing it all now. After discussion with tholly, we decided the parameters could stay for reference purposes, althought they don't show the users who fix them will probably look! As for {{Uncategorizedstub}} i personally think it should be here, but i dunno. I'm undoing, that button is switched OFF and when it's back on it'll be running manually. It removes stub tags by articles size, not sentences unfortunately! Thanks, BG7even 10:00, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

News

Hello BG7. Have you created the article for the Simple News yet? It is due to be delivered on the 15th of November. Regards Kennedy (talk) 11:38, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Not yet but I will do one now ;). It's going to be seriously random though! BG7even 11:39, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not a problem. If you like, you can put your article(s) into Wikipedia:Simple News/Bluegoblin7/Articles or whatever. Keep them all in the one place? Regards Kennedy (talk) 11:52, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yep will do ;). GBot is also primed and ready. Slight problem though: I really have no idea as to what to write about! Perhaps something about DYK? BG7even 11:53, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yes if you like. Whatever you like. Didn't you say you wrote articles elsewhere? Write your opinions if you want. Whatever. Kennedy (talk) 12:01, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, i've made a start at Wikipedia:Simple News/Bluegoblin7/Articles/1. What do you think? BG7even 12:07, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
It looks good! You have used some little cliches that make it read like a real newspaper article. Nice. Kennedy (talk)
Your welcome ;). I did say i'd had a bit of experience! I'll try and get something a bit better for the next issue :D. Thanks, BG7even 14:51, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

You have changed your stance on stubs ? - place to discuss as project reaching consensus?

I note [1] endorsement of Irn-Bru which is tagged as a stub and is 997 characters. Note I am quite happy with Irn-Bru but not with Cape Town which I believe is too short.

As DYK is relatively new, there are a number of issues that crop up which we have yet to have consensus on. I think there should be a space where we collect our reasonings and discuss them as we develop parameters for what is in and what is out. We could be the community (as in Simple Talk) but I think should be aimed at the project and therefore a useful place would be Wikipedia talk:Did you know. I note there is a userfied version of unwritten rules at en en:User:Art LaPella/Unwritten rules. I think it may be useful as a model for understanding how we interpret the rules rather than having to go back and revisit the rules to make the fine distinctions, we can have rule clarifications somewhere else. Otherwise we will have a rule like the one at en:Wikipedia:DYK#DYK_rules which is hardly simple Englishand will become longer if we turn it into simple English. ... But we can go that way if the community wants. --Matilda (talk) 23:37, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Matilda,
I've closed DYK noms by being bold and ignoring all rules until we sort this out. I see many things that we need to look at --> Wikipedia:Simple talk. Thanks for all your help with the section, and i'm sure your comments will be useful!
I will reply in more detail shortly.
Thanks,
BG7even 09:11, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • With ref to your recently posted comment If there aren't more comments soon it's going to pretty much close back to how it was, and if people moan, then tough - they had their chance to speak out! - you need to allow at least 24 hours for a conversation given different time zones - you probably need to allow several days - it is not reasonable to expect everybody to be available for a conversation and to respond to replies in a 12 hour discussion (discussion started 9.02 UTC and your comment was less than 12 hours later at 20.46) --Matilda (talk) 21:23, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Meh. My comment worked. It prompted more discussion. There was no way I was going to close it until at least 11AM UTC anyway. BG7even 22:33, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
It actually took me some time to put together my comments in between other commitments - they weren't in response to your comment!
I think you need slow down a little - ignoring all rules and being bold seems to be a little too much - for example your stance on T:DYK/N (now reversed), that you have closed DYK suggestions (reversing out legitimate suggestion) was in my view inappropriate - the discussion and DYK nominations can happen in parallel, suggesting closing off the discussion - let the community decide when they have discussed enough - if it si still ticking over, you shouldn't close it - we aren't running to any deadlines. --Matilda (talk) 23:08, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Lol oh well ;)
Those rules are actually very useful sometimes - my stance has not changed at T:DYK/N as I still think it is not needed at SEWP, but seeing as consensus dictates it stays it stays. I find it useful, of course, but the Preview button works just as well imo.
As for closing DYK suggestions, all of the most recent ones have added to the debate - it's easier to get the discussion finished with and then bring in the new rules - no point in having two sets of rules, as once an article is approved and on the Next Update page it's a bit mean to say NO!
I wasn't going to close it as I said. No need for the lectures - i've been involved in WMF for nearly two years now as a user, and another couple as an IP... BG7even 23:13, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK project member review sought

Hi, following some discussion which has now died down (and to which you contributed) I have proposed some rules for DYK which refine those we already had and are based on our recent experiences and the discussion. As a member of the DYK project, could you please have a look at Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Proposed rules and give your comments. Thanks Matilda (talk) 23:43, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adminship co nomination

Thank you for your kind words following up on Ryan Cross's offer to nominate me for adminship. I have replied at my talk page. I am very honoured that you consider co-nominating the RfA. Regards --Matilda (talk) 23:08, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi - I am in the embarrassing position of multiple offers of nomination for RfA - please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Matilda and my user talk page at User talk:Matilda#Ready?. I have elected to wait for the conventional 3 months and this gives a week for you (and maybe others) to add your conom to the page Synergy has prepared if you still wish. --Matilda (talk) 00:55, 19 November 2008 (UTC) (embarrassed but flattered)Reply

Simple News

Hello. Is your bot ready to deliver Simple News tommorow? Kennedy (talk) 10:23, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey Kennedy,
Yep, it's ready to go. Just a question, GBot (the unflagged one) is approved to run it, but would you rather it have the flag? GBot2 is approved as an AWB bot.
Cheers,

I'm not entirely sure. Best with GBot (1) as it is approved to run it. I confess I know little about bots... Kennedy (talk) 11:40, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Simple News

Hi, if you need any help with simple news, I'm willing to do anything needed. Yotcmdr (talk) 11:36, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi Yotcmdr!
Thanks for the offer! We need help in lots of ways! Article/feature writing is very useful, as is participating in things such as Kennedy's "QandA" and my new "What's in a name?". And of course, feedback is super-ueber valuable! Also, if you're good at coding, a collapsible delivery box and a box with just the headlines would also be good!
Thanks for your interest!
BG7even 11:44, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
May I ask what your new What's in a name? is about. I wouldn't mind being featured in Kennedy's QandA. For the box I coud do it, I'd just need to know what you'd want in it. Yotcmdr =talk to the commander= 11:52, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, the What's in a name? about is basically a short interview of editors as to how they got their username, if there's any significance in it etc. If you want to do Kennedy's QandA ping him ;). As for the box, the collapsible one will have the latest issue in it as well as a signature, and the other one would just be links to the main features. You can fill it in with lots of "foos" for now if that's what you do! Thanks, BG7even 11:55, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I just wanted to know if the articles for Simple News could be about anything. Yotcmdr (talk) 19:19, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yep, anything you want! As long as it's remotely interesting ;) Cheers, BG7even 19:22, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have created a logo, in the same font as the last one; it now says "Simple News". Shall I upload it to commons? Thanks. Yotcmdr (talk) 19:38, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please do! Kennedy (talk) 19:39, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
:O Beat me to it! I think it can be uploaded locally actually, as it's SEWP related (there are lots of logos uploaded) but Commons will also be fine. Thanks, BG7even 19:40, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Commons doesn't seem to accept it, it gives me an error every time. I'll upload it here then. Yotcmdr (talk) 19:42, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hmm... ok, if it doesn't work here, let me know and you could email it to me and I could try. BG7even 19:44, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ok, done. Does it look any good?

I've just seen, the font is slightly different. Yotcmdr (talk) 20:05, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

This one looks a bit better I think.
Thanks, it's great. I'll add it on now. BG7even 21:20, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yep, it looks good! I just moved it to "/1" because that way we can link to it in a way that will always be there, so you dont copy over it with your next article. I'm just going to add the format, and then I will copy edit it and add it into the next issue. Thanks!
