Wikipedia:Template messages
This page is a guideline on the Simple English Wikipedia. Many editors agree with the ideas on this page. It is a good idea to follow it, but it is not policy. You can change the page as needed, but please use the talk page to make sure that other editors agree with any big changes. |
Templates are used within pages to provide the same message over and over again. Changes to the look, wording, or style of the message can be done quickly, because templates are made again for the reader when the article loads.
In other words, when the message is changed, you do not need to update a page that uses it if you use a template. Standard notices that might be on a page for months or forever should be "transcluded" for easy updating. This loads the current version of the message and puts it on the page every time you load it.
Some templates are used to tell people something about the article. Other templates (also called navboxes) are used to give links to other articles. These templates are in Category:Navigational boxes.
For any of these messages, you can include "subst:" (as in {{subst:1911}}) when inserting them to put the full text into the page. Doing this means that any future changes to the template will not be shown in that article, but it can be useful sometimes.
To make a new message, start a page in the Template namespace. The title should be "Template:", then the name of your message. The page should then be written with the text of your message. Add your new template to this list.

{{subst:CopyNotice}} (talk) |
We like and strongly encourage helpful changes to Wikipedia, but "message" was directly copied and pasted from the main English Wikipedia. Please do not do that. Such articles are usually too complex. They need to be simplified before or immediately after being added to the Simple English Wikipedia. In addition, be sure to include attribution on the article's talk page. Thank you. |

{{subst:Noupload}} (talk) |
Welcome to Wikipedia! Our policy is that images cannot be uploaded directly to the Simple English Wikipedia, and any images uploaded here will be deleted. Please upload any images to the Wikimedia Commons next time. Images uploaded there can be used in Simple English Wikipedia articles in the usual way. Thank you. |

{{subst:Uw-advert1}} (talk) |
An article you recently created, or a change you made to an article or page is written like an advertisement. Advertisements are not allowed on Wikipedia and will be removed, so please change the article or page so that it has a neutral point of view. Users who continue to advertise may be blocked from changing Wikipedia. Thank you. |

{{subst:Copyright}} (talk) |
Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that you recently made a new article or made changes to one by adding things copied from a book, magazine, newspaper or another website without the permission of the copyright holder. Many sources, including websites found on the Internet, are copyrighted. I am afraid Wikipedia cannot accept any things copied from these sources as it can get Wikipedia into serious legal trouble. The article or changes have been or will soon be deleted. Next time, please look up sources to find out information for articles and explain it in your own words, and do not copy sentences or images from them. Thank you. |

{{subst:Warn}} (talk) |
Hello, Template messages. When you revert a user's changes, like you did earlier{{subst:#if:| to [[User:{{{user}}}|{{{user}}}'s]] edit}}{{subst:#if:| to the page "[[{{{page}}}]]"}}, don't forget to leave the user a message on their talk page, especially when reverting vandalism or a test edit. You may find Template:User talk page warnings/table useful when doing this, to let them know that the change was considered inappropriate, and to direct them to the sandbox. Thank you. |
