Welcome!
changeHello Ahmad252! I'm Desertborn and an active editor here. Thank you for your changes. I just wanted to stop by and welcome you to Wikipedia!
As you make changes around here, you might have questions. I know I sure did when I started. When you do, please feel free to ask them on Wikipedia:Simple talk. We also have a nice guide to help you get started, with a good amount of helpful information. It's called Wikipedia:Simple start. You can also check out what I use when working here.
Oh, and one last thing. You can leave messages on pages like this, which we call talk pages. Each user has one, and each other page does too. When you leave a message, we ask that you sign your messages. You can do this by using four tildes (~~~~); that will automatically add your username and the date after your post.
I hope you enjoy editing here! Desertborn (talk) 13:36, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
- Oh, I see that you came over from en wiki. So you may find Wikipedia:An English Wikipedian's guide quite helpful, as it explains the differences here. Desertborn (talk) 13:37, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you! Ahmadtalk 13:40, 20 December 2019 (UTC)
Quarry
changeGreetings, Ahmad! Many thanks for your exemplary help with my query about interwiki category mining. I only had a vague idea of what would be useful, and you understood and followed through, complete with a link to the Quarry search plus adding the missing members of this new category here. (I gave you individual thanks for those; you deserve them!) You are a valued asset to the international virtual community that is WP, and a credit to your fellow users here at the Simple English project. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 21:57, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- Thank you so much Deborahjay, that's very kind of you. I'm really interested in projects like Simplewiki, maybe because they are a "peaceful" and healthy place (or at least I feel that way). I try to be more active here, thanks again. Kind regards, Ahmadtalk 12:23, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
My first Quarry attempt, zero results
changeHello again, @Ahmad252:. Evidently my first attempt at a Quarry search (No. 40805) failed, possibly because I don't understand the meaning and use of Fork. The Category:NatureServe critically imperiled species is severely underpopulated in Simple.WP - I found it among Special pages/Pages not connected to [Wikidata] items, not a foolproof route but often reveals weak and neglected pages, e.g. unlabeled for lacking categories, stub templates, etc. You might be interested to know that the category has 513 pages in en.wp, 26 pages in fa.wp (!), and 9 in ar.wp. Perhaps I need to read a tutorial on Quarry or SQL and I'm jumping ahead by guessing at customizing fields in the model you produced for me yesterday. So this is not urgent, I just don't want to neglect it. N.B. I'm unfamiliar with NatureServe but want to promote good data access regarding critically endangered species. Thanks! -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 16:04, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Deborahjay: Hi. Yes, underpopulated categories that are not connected to their corresponding Wikidata item are a common thing I see in many projects, along with duplicate items and all the stuff.
- About the query, it is because of the "NatureServe critically imperiled species". It must be "NatureServe_critically_imperiled_species" (no space character is allowed, replace them all with an underline and that should do the job). Please let me know if anything goes wrong. Thank you. Ahmadtalk 16:15, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- I resubmitted the query after replacing the spaces with underscores as you suggested (and I'd observed originally but neglected :-/ and it appeared to run, but still gave no results. There should be at least the en:Palos Verdes blue butterfly, though I wouldn't be surprised if the simple.wp lacks pages at the level of species/variety populating the en.wp category. Any other ideas? -- Deborahjay (talk) 18:29, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Deborahjay: There seems to be a problem with the category itself. I tried using another tool (PetScan) as well, but even that didn't show any result. I think it's because of the category's name, specifically the word "NatureServe". However, I can think of some other methods. I'll test them as soon as possible. Ahmadtalk 18:56, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Deborahjay: Turns out that the query was actually right, and there was no problem with the name! None of the 513 articles exist on Simple English Wikipedia, I tested it manually. About Palos Verdes blue, the point is that it is a member of en:Category:NatureServe imperiled species in enwiki, not en:Category:NatureServe critically imperiled species (notice the absence of "critically "). Therefore, it does not show up in the query result. Ahmadtalk 19:24, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- Perhaps this is an example to curb my enthusiasm* and take smaller steps - particularly attention to such details. I greatly appreciate your guidance here. I'll definitely try the Quarry approach again soon. *Long ago the younger of my brothers lived for a while in Palos Verdes, so it caught my eye here. So much to do! -- Deborahjay (talk) 19:34, 23 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Deborahjay: You're welcome. No problem there, one of the best things about Wikipedia is working on these subjects! But aside from that, the interesting thing about the article itself is the difference between conservation status in simplewiki and enwiki. About the Quarry, well I strongly recommend using it again. It's really powerful for many purposes. Ahmadtalk 20:08, 23 December 2019 (UTC)

new stub types
changeHello, Ahmad252. I noticed that you created a template and category for fortification stubs. You probably didn't know, but stubs are managed differently here than they are on English Wikipedia ("enwiki"). Here new stub types need to be approved at Wikipedia talk:Simple Stub Project before being created. Since this new type hasn't been approved, the template and category have been deleted, and the article they were on has been changed. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask. If you are interested in other ways that this wiki is different from enwiki, you can look at this list that I maintain. --Auntof6 (talk) 16:49, 1 January 2020 (UTC)
- Hello Auntof6. Thank you. I will take this to account from now on. Thanks for the userpage link, it's really helpful! Ahmadtalk 17:37, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

change- Please do not bring over complex pages from En wiki and just leave them. The language in the article must be simple, and the ones you imported were very definitely not simple. If you can't simplify them then do not import them. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:15, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- @Macdonald-ross: I tried to simplify them as much as I could, but that was a biology-related article, and some non-simple English words are needed to be used. Please restore those pages and move them to my userpage subpages without leaving a redirect, so that I can work on them. Thank you. Ahmadtalk 09:18, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- I did a side-by-side check before I deleted the pages, and others can too if they doubt me. Be realistic and do simple things first. To take a complex subject is not such a good idea, because editing it requires both advanced language skills and content skills. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:38, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
- No, I don't challenge the deletion by any means, I know that I'm inexperienced. I just wanted to work on it more, but I guess I would take simpler subjects first, as you recommended. Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try soon. Ahmadtalk 09:43, 8 January 2020 (UTC)
