Flood flag

Hello, dear EchoDodo. :) Thank you very much for your help with categorizing: it's really appreciated. Do you plan on doing many more changes presently? If so, I can give you the flood flag so that your changes will be hidden from the New Changes. We are a rather smaller wiki than the English Wikipedia, so it's more important to keep a careful track of new changes for possible vandalism to clean up. What do you think? Hominins, category for

The start of this discussion was moved from my talk page on the English Wikipedia.

I have discovered that Simple has a category Hominians, which is a mis-spelling for Hominins. It has a bunch of pages relating to human evolution. The name of the category needs to be changed, and all pages listed there to have category links to Hominins. I contact you because I remember Category doesn't normally use redirects, so I don't know how to do the change myself. It must be done, one way or the other, because the topic is important. Are you sure that is the correct name? I think Category:Hominina is the correct category, since that is what the corresponding English Wikipedia category is called. Once we've got the name sorted out I can go through it by bot, or by hand if there are few articles. By the way, mind if I move this conversation over to my Simple English talk page? I like to keep conversations relevant to just one wiki on my talk page there if I am active, and also it will give people watching my talk page there a chance to comment. - EdoDodo ^talk 15:00, 30 September 2010 (UTC)

Both Hominins (English) and Hominina (Latin) are correct. In Nature and Science there is increasing use of the informal; but not for professional publications in taxonomy.
I think most Simple users would feel comfortable with Hominins, with a redirect from Hominina. Many of our biology categories are in the English version; and in general our categories are decided as we think best on Simple.
Category 'Hominians' should be deleted: it is a non-word. Regards, Macdonald-ross (talk) 14:23, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

One more thought, which I should have had earlier. We find on enWP taxoboxes three lower ranks below family level. They are:

Sub-family Homininae

Tribe: Hominini

Sub-tribe: Hominina

I think they could all redirect to a single category Hominins, at least on Simple. I can't see any sense in Simple taxonomy being too obsessive, and that goes for categories as well as taxoboxes. What this amounts to is another reason for making the category Hominins, and not Hominina. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:22, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing the infobox on Twitter

Hi EdoDodo,

I know I left that infobox looking very messy, but I wasn't sure how to go about fixing it. Much appreciated.

I expect I'll run into this issue again. I can see from your edits how to go about it, but if you could point me to where I might find the SEWP infobox templates or whatever to match up, I'd appreciate it. Kind of hard to search for "Infobo" or whatever.

Hi there! Most of the templates on Simple English have the same name as those on English, so simply typing in the name on simple should get you there. If it doesn't, however, we do have a category for infoboxes where you will usually find a suitable infobox for your article. Once you've decided which one to use, go to its template page, and there will usually be a description of the different bits of information ("parameters") you can fill in. You don't have to fill them all in, of course, most are optional. It's still usually a good idea to leave them there, though, even if you don't fill them in, so that if somebody who edits the article in the future knows what to put in there and has a source, he can fill it in. - EdoDodo ^talk 08:03, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
