You are going to have to better describe what you want to do with your bot. Generally I don't like bots dealing with content work which is what categories are. -DJSasso (talk) 21:23, 16 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm sorta confused. If you're asking for more info on the exact commands I'll be using, I would use the more basic of action commands such is remove and move. I would also put a throttle for the trial edits (or for every edit if you desire). So, I would use commands like these python -pt:10 move -from:"oldCat" -to:"newCat". If you were asking for info on what I would fix with the bot as of now, nothing in particular. Programming is something I have always enjoyed and thought it wouldn't hurt to have a bot be able to help out when some cat issues pop up. I hope I addressed your concern. Best, ƏviŁŁyGøødcontributions 17:39, 17 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yeah for a bot of this nature we need to know exactly what categories you will be changing. You need a specific task for stuff like this. In some cases we may flag it as a bot or we may want you to edit unflagged depending on the task. If you don't have a clear task in mind then we can't approve the bot as anything that does work like this needs to have a specific mandate. -DJSasso (talk) 18:32, 17 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Withdrawn by operator. Oh! I thought all bots could be approved prior to being assigned tasks. I probably chose the only script to differ from this. ;) Anyhow, I'll withdraw it until a cat task is available. In the meantime, I'll look at more scripts that will benefit the wiki in the short-term. Best, ƏviŁŁyGøødcontributions 01:26, 18 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • There are issues with removing interwiki links (using the -force parameter). Are you sure you are able to handle interwiki conflicts properly? If in doubt, please don't remove links. Chenzw  Talk  04:00, 7 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you.  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  19:42, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(change conflict)  I was about to reject this due to your past issues with running the bot unapproved and a few times where you have been blocked. Not sure you should have a bot flag. Since Barras as said to do a trial go ahead. But when it comes tine for final consideration I want my concerns known. -DJSasso (talk) 19:45, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I understand your concerns, but the blocks go back more than one year. Enough time for me, actually. Just explaining why I at least give him the trial. -Barras (talk) 19:49, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No worries. Just wanted to make sure people knew I had concerns. Was going to say another crat can overrule me if they disagreed in my original post that I edit conflicted with. Bots are powerful tools and shouldn't be given out to people who aren't experienced or fully trusted is all. :) -DJSasso (talk) 20:08, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  Comment. Do you have bots elsewhere? Jon@talk:~$ 22:54, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Well, actually, I have a bot at enwp, but not interwiki bot. It is an approved AWB bot.  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  23:03, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, so I don't have to pull the information from you... can you please link the contribs page to the bot, and the bot request over at EN? Jon@talk:~$ 23:08, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]
, but it has had more than one successful BRFAs. The ongoing one is adding WikiProject templates, the most recent one was a one-run to replace a template., and were successful, and were withdrawn by me.  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  23:12, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not a 'crat, but it's never stopped me from commenting here before when I have concerns. So I just want to say that I have concerns about this user operating a bot with a bot flag. I've not checked up the links from enwp, but to be honest that is irrelevant in my eyes as we are a completely different wiki. I know I'll probably get asked for examples, so there are some below of why I'm comfortable with you having a bot flag. In addition, I also cite IRC, though accept that it is separate from the wiki.

Finally, looking through contributions there are hundreds of minor AWB edits that should have been made with the flood flag and tie into the above. I doubt whether there were 'grounds' for these edits to be made, but, again, cannot be bothered to check. I've also seen many edits to discussions in recent days that I believe show the user in question unsuitable to be operating a flagged bot.   Comment. On hold. Jon@talk:~$ 02:15, 28 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Comment. A recent scan of you talk page on the English Wikipedia is a bit telling, that in combination with the above information provided to me by BG causes me pause. I am going to recommend that Barras decline this bot request. I am in the same mind of DJSasso. I don't know when would be the best time. I see two recent issues on the English Wikipedia, our sister project, with regards to automated tasks. For me, I nonconcur with assigning the flag. Best, Jon@talk:~$ 02:24, 28 December 2011 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Status Unknown. The bot trial has not been completed yet. Following my message on your user talk regarding the removal of interwiki links, the bureaucrats will need to see more of your bot's editing before coming to a decision. Please update us on your progress. Chenzw  Talk  11:53, 12 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Withdrawn by operator. I have about 53 edits, but I am withdrawing. The bot (and I, unfortunately) aren't active enough, as I am busy now. Also, per above, it is obvious to me that users do not support me having the bot flag for my bot. Anyway, an (almost) inactive bot has no need for the flag, so I withdraw.  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  01:42, 13 January 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi there! My bot has been running for a few years on the English Wikipedia, with a BRFA at w:en:Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Thehelpfulbot, it can run on a crontab on WMF Labs, so I can set it to run every 15 minutes, hourly etc. Thanks, The Helpful One 13:35, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Alright approved for a test run. If it looks good after 50 edits (might take awhile as we rarely have articles in that cat) I will give the flag to it. -DJSasso (talk) 17:11, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I'll leave it on a cron tab for the next few days and check up on it in a couple of days to see how it's going. The Helpful One 21:20, 5 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hmm, so I think someone else must have cleaned those up by now - can it do standard interwiki stuff too? The Helpful One 00:12, 6 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Cyberbot I

  • Contributions
  • Operator:
  • Programming language: PHP
  • Function: Edits Adminstats and dates maintenence tags.
  • Description: This bot mainly operates on en.wikipedia but it dates tags and works with the adminstats template here as well. It is a replacement for User:SoxBot.

--Cyberpower678 (talk) 02:43, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I would rather not mix interwiki with these other tasks. I will approve a trial of 50 edits each of the adminstats and template dating. The interwiki I would prefer you do on another bot account if you wish to do interwiki. Interwiki generates such a large number of edits generally that it could make it harder to track your edits for the other tasks. -DJSasso (talk) 13:32, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I have started the bot however, I have a faulty cron tab loaded and everything seems to have come to a standstill. I will have to start it from home.— Hello! 14:44, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
Update: Everything should be running now.— Hello! 00:55, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

Trial complete. The adminstats trial has completed. Task has been disabled pending approval.— Hello! 22:11, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

I will approve you on the adminstats for now, however, I won't give you the flag until I see more of the template date tagging. -DJSasso (talk) 11:53, 27 March 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Fair enough however, there aren't that many that need dating, so the trial may take awhile, but thanks for the approval for adminstats. I am re-enabling the task now.— Hello! 12:58, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
Update: Just making sure that this request is still alive. Dating tags doesn't happen a lot so you can keep track of the tags this bot does date here.— Hello! 18:54, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

It's going to take forever for it to accumulate 50 edits. The bot has dated at least 15 maintenance tags so far on 15 articles. Is this enough to do a proper evaluation.Hello! 21:41, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Don't worry about it. It is being watched and when it passes 50 I will flag it. It does such a little number of edits it doesn't even need a flag really. We often don't flag bots with such low edit numbers. -DJSasso (talk) 12:26, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you need my attention, just let me know on my talk page.— Hello! 14:38, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Operator: Hazard-SJ
  • Programming language: Python
  • Function: Fixing ISBNs
  • Description: The bot will check through a set of pages with ISBN errors and attempt to fix them using a RegEx replacement. I did a scan of the db dump (from 27/5/2012) and it seems there will be replacements to about 2687 pages. As a result, I decided not to attempt them semi-automatically from my account, but rather, automatically from my bot's.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  02:53, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I am not going to deny your request. I will leave it up to someone else. But with your past history of mistakes with automated tasks and this particular task being more difficult than you probably realize (it ended up with someone going to Arbitration on en recently) I don't know that you are the ideal person to attempt such a task. -DJSasso (talk) 12:21, 29 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    • Though I hadn't entirely followed the en ArbCom case, I was of the view that it had been about his usage of automated tools in general, and not the specific task. The task of fixing ISBNs was part of what one of his bots did (no bot is doing that currently to my knowledge, and all his tasks were placed on the en bot owner's noticeboard for others to "take over", hence my request there for (basically) this exact task requested here at the moment, although the one that used to be done by the former bot on enwiki did even more things than mine (if approved) will. Unlike on enwiki, where I haven't scanned the entire database (it would take a long tome to download the entire dump, so I might ask a Toolserver user to run a SQL query for me), I have scanned the entire simplewiki, and removed page duplicates (hence, my estimated number of affected pages). If it helps to simplify what I'm about to do to you, the set RegExs that I'll be using are:
      • Removal of the colon ((r'ISBN: (\d+)', r'ISBN \1')
      • Removal of the word "number" or a variant thereof ((r'ISBN( number| no\.?| No\.?|-Nummer|-Nr\.):? (\d+)', r'ISBN \2'))
      • Replacement of en dash, em dash etc. with hyphen-minus:
        • (ur'ISBN (978|979) *[\- −\.‐-―] *(\d+) *[\- −\.‐-―] *(\d+) *[\- −\.‐-―] *(\d+) *[\- −\.‐-―] *(\d)(?!\d)', r'ISBN \1-\2-\3-\4-\5') for ISBN-13
        • (ur'ISBN (\d+) *[\- −\.‐-―] *(\d+) *[\- −\.‐-―] *(\d+) *[\- −\.‐-―] *(\d|X|x)(?!\d)', r'ISBN \1-\2-\3-\4') for ISBN-10
      • Addition of a space between "ISBN" and the number if the space is absent, and replacement of   with the proper space ((r'ISBN(| | )((\d(-?)){12}\d|(\d(-?)){9}[\dXx])', r'ISBN \2'))
    • I hope this helps.  Hazard-SJ  ✈  02:40, 30 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • As mentioned at your request on en there were a large number of problems with this when it was being done by Rich. I am going to watch their decision and see how it goes. • Operator: Auntof6
  • Programming language: AWB
  • Function: add defaultsort where appropriate
  • Description:I'd like to use my existing bot to add defaultsort to categories and articles where appropriate. Examples of where I'd use this are:
    • categories and articles named after people, where the article name is not the correct sort order (for example, an article about John Jones should be sorted by "Jones, John")
    • categories and articles with names that start with either the word "A", the word "An", or the word "The"
Bot is already approved, just asking approval for this additional task. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:22, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Edited to add: I recognize that there are some articles and categories starting with the words "A" or "An" that shouldn't have their sort order changed. These include A & C Black, A B C, A (musical note), and others. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:35, 20 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Could you run a test set that includes some cases like that. -DJSasso (talk) 14:15, 22 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sure. Note that this will be manual, not automatic. I just ran through all 131 pages that start with either the word A or the word "An". Twenty pages had defaultsort added. I set AWB to skip the ones that either were redirects or already had a defaultsort. Here are the ones I skipped manually because this change wasn't applicable:
A & C Black • A (Cyrillic) • A (disambiguation) • A Coruña Province • A La Costa Sud • A Portuguesa • A cappella • A levels • A major • A minor • A priori (languages) • An Chung-sik • An Najaf • An Sun-Jin • An Yong-Hak
Note that, although I skipped redirects here, I plan to go back and check those because sometimes it is appropriate for redirects to have categories, and in those cases they should also sort correctly. Also, please note that I have added the word "An" to the request above (sorry, it slipped my mind when I wrote the request). --Auntof6 (talk) 03:03, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I completely forgot you run manually. This all looks good. Have at it. -DJSasso (talk) 11:49, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! I would run automatically if it were appropriate, but I need to verify the changes for all of the tasks I've requested so far. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:30, 27 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You removed a large number of links that you shouldn't have removed. I am guessing you had the force param on at the same time as auto (which you should never do). You are going to have to go through your edits and manually check a number of the links you removed and re-add them. -DJSasso (talk) 11:48, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Can you give me an example of a link that the bot should not have been removing? --weltforce 12:05, 23 May 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I am not sure if you understand the issue or not. The issue is that on templates, interwiki links should go to document pages and not onto the main page. When you say "added 'documentation' to skip list.". Do you mean if the page has the word documentation in it that it will skip that page? If so then I suppose that might work. Generally we don't recommend people edit in the template namespace unless they have a specialized bot. But if you can find a way to get it to work properly all the power to you. -DJSasso (talk) 17:32, 6 July 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not done I would prefer to see you get the flag on your homewiki first before spreading to this wiki because I need to see your experience with running a bot. You are not a regular editor here so I have no experience with you personally so would need to see bot experience on the other wiki. So for now I am marking this as not done. Once you have a flag there let me know and we can run a trial here. But please do not make any bot edits here without permission or the bot will be blocked. I also find it troubling that your home wiki is a bit hesitant to give you the flag and you only came here thinking it would be easier to get the flag here. -DJSasso (talk) 16:31, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In my homewiki I won't get a flag, I think. So I tried it here.--Das Schäfchen (talk) 16:45, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On his homewiki, the request has been withdrawed, after I told him better to move his bot here because there are quite enough Interwiki bots on the German Wikipedia; he didn't came here because he was thinking that it would be easier here, just because there is a bright consensus that minors may not got enough experience for a bot (also, no Admins under the age of 18 are hoped-for in dewiki). And to my knowledge, to operate a bot here does not require regular activity, as there are many bots runned by operators which have their home wiki elsewhere. I would prefer giving Das Schäfchen a bot trial (around 50 as usual), and, if there are no problems, approve him. In the German Wikipedia, there is a lot more complicated situation, and he is a experienced editor there with around 6,600 contributions, more than 56% in the article and more than 9% in the Wikipedia namespace. Sincerely, --weltforce (talk) 17:05, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, and I won't change Commonscats anymore, and here aren't enought Interwiki-Bots. Greetings, --Das Schäfchen (talk) 17:51, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We don't require all editors to have bot flags on their homewiki, but something like an interwiki bot then yes we would want them to have a bot on the wiki that is their main language since they are editing language links. But in general individual bots do require activity on this wiki unless its a bot no one here runs or can run. Or its a bot that is already running on and we have gone to them specifically to ask them to run it here. Like we have a very large number of iw bots that edit this wiki through both local flags (45) and global flags (56). At this point I don't think it would be appropriate to grant to flag to an inexperienced bot operator who isn't active on this wiki. -DJSasso (talk) 18:55, 14 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I just want to check interwikis. Could I please have a trial? And if not, coult I do some test-edits more before you decide? And I'm a bit acive here on simple wiki, too, not only on de.wikipedia, but mostly.--Das Schäfchen (talk) 15:50, 15 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Answer?--Das Schäfchen (talk) 16:43, 19 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The same as before, get some experience on your home wiki first. -DJSasso (talk) 12:14, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I only want to do some interwikis, the same like weltforce. He isn't 18, so he don't have a bot in the German wikipedia, I'm too. But here I only want to do some interwiki-fixes, not more. And in the German wikipedia, my home wiki, I perhaps get a flag when I have her one, not reverse. Why you don't unblock the bot here, I do some testedits and then you decide? Pleease give me a chance, Greetings--Das Schäfchen (talk) 12:45, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Weltforce was active here as an editor. You haven't been. Get active in the community here for a couple months and yes we can look into getting you a bot. -DJSasso (talk) 13:28, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think you see that so because of my mhistakes I made whith the commons-Cats.--Das Schäfchen (talk) 13:39, 21 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Note: Now I have a flag on bar.wikipedia, see here --Das Schäfchen (talk) 17:04, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And when you have experience with running it we will take a look at granting it here. At this point you have done very few edits. -DJSasso (talk) 17:41, 30 August 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So, from now on (from today) I have a new time plan for my bots in bar.wikipedia and als.wikipedia: They work 8 to 13 hours on week end and 2 to 4 hours from Monday to Frieday. In als.wikipedia I got my flag today. And I have now some more experience with running, any mistakes like this won't happend, but every bot did some mistakes;) I do some edits more than the last weeks, so it won't be so few anymore.--Das Schäfchen (talk) 12:52, 16 September 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Could I please have a trial? Than you can see how the bot works here, see in als.wikipedia and bar.wikipedia. And perhaps I'll get than a permission in German Wikipedia when I have one here (Because you said that you not understand why I have not got a permission in de.wikipedia).--Das Schäfchen (talk) 11:38, 4 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not at this point. I have already explained it to you. -DJSasso (talk) 12:10, 4 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Als.wikipedia is easyer ...--Das Schäfchen (talk) 15:18, 4 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

(unindenting) I don't see how being easier affects the approval process here. We are not I stand by the decision of Djsasso here and will not approve your bot until it has been approved on (your home wiki). a bureaucrat sees that you have sufficient experience with operating a bot. Bot Job request - Infobox fixes

Category:Articles with infobox errors currently has over 1300 pages with infobox problems. One of the biggest issues there is depreciated parameters - namely "Born" and "Died". These have been switched to "birth_date" and "death_date". Manually replacing these (even with AWB) is going to be a bit of a chore. For a bot? no problem at all. (currently hitting that category and skipping all pages with "group_or_band" as the Born/Died parms should only be used on solo performers)

One added hope - Can we get a list of all pages using {{Infobox musical artist}} where the birth_date parameter is anything but just the template {{birth date and age}} or {{birth date}} and the death_date parameter (if present) is either blank (still alive) or {{death date and age}}? A lot of the usage of the template uses the old format of including the location of birth/death in the associated parameter. Place parameters have been added to the infobox so this shouldn't be needed and may cause more issues down the road. Also, there are still a lot of pages using either plain text or linked dates instead of the template. A list of these articles would give us an idea of the extent of the issue and help decide if it is worth undertaking the changes (which would likely have to be done manually.) --Creol(talk) 22:59, 4 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I can probably take care of this. Probably won't be for a few days since this is a holiday weekend. -DJSasso (talk) 12:11, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I did a quick and dirty change and I probably missed some but the category only has 196 now which are mostly other problems. I will create some proper regex to see if I can fix the remaining. As for your list that will take a bit longer. However, I have a feeling articles like that might be listed under #3 in that category. -DJSasso (talk) 14:22, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Appreciate the help. 160 on the list to look at is a lot easier to deal with than 1300. --Creol(talk) 23:25, 5 October 2012 (UTC)Reply[reply]
