Patrolling new articles

Just FYI, it's OK to mark articles as patrolled if you're tagging them for QD. That takes them out of the unpatrolled list so that other patrollers don't end up looking at them as well. Cheers! --Auntof6 (talk) 20:28, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for letting me know; I actually usually do that, but I must've forgot. My apologies. Cheers! –Orashmatash 20:34, 1 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hijra (Southern Asia)

Hello, Orashmatash.

Earlier today, you nominated Hijra (Southern Asia) for Quick deletion, based on the fact that it was transwikied, and had not yet been simplified. I have spent some time sipmlifying, added references and interwikis; please have a look, and propose the article for deletion here, if you still think it should be deleted. --Eptalon (talk) 12:35, 5 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Looks good to me, the complex tag should do. Thanks Eptalon! –Orashmatash 12:36, 5 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

occupy london - the changes I was trying to save

Hi, I was just working on that article that I've put into the site but it looks like you are editing it too and have more seniority. My daughter asked me about the Occupy London protests and I thought it would be good to put some info on here. Below is the version I wanted to save (but couldn't because of an editing conflict), just in case it helps with your work right now. All the best, Lucy

Occupy London (also known as Occupy London Stock Exchange) is a peaceful protest and demonstration. The aims of the protest is to demanding dialogue and to draw attention to several different issues such as the widening gap between rich and poor people in the UK as well as the great influence that companies and business groups have on decisions made by the UK government.

Location and History

The protest is based in a group of tents pitched in the grounds of St Paul's Cathedral in London, United Kingdom, which is just in front of the London Stock Exchange. The protest started on 15 October 2011 in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York, United States. On 22nd October 2011 an additional site was set up in Finsbury Square which is about 1 Kilometer away.

Organisation and Events

The protesters are not part of a political party and they do not have a leader. The camp is well organised and, amongst other things, has set up a forum for lectures and discussions open to anybody who is interested.

Azerbaijan Railways

I copied the first part, the introduction, directly from English Wikipedia for the Azerbaijan Railways article, because I thought that the language is simple enough despite the technic details. Instead of erasing the article, what are your recommndations for it to stay?

Eptalon looks like he's going to work on simplifying the article, so it will most likely stay. ---- 10:35, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Added a cleanup tag; most of the language is simple enough. I nevertheless invite you to work on it. Simply copying an article-part from enwp is not in itself reason for deletion.--Eptalon (talk) 10:37, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I spotted a few pretty complex bits, Eptalon. That's why I tagged it for QD. It should be fine when it's simplified. --Orashmatash 10:42, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Rename

Hi ExxonMobil! (;))This might sort itself out when you get renamed, but can you keep an eye on Special:DoubleRedirects? You have quite a few ^_^ Normandy (talk) 12:50, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Uhuh. I'm going on wikibreak until I am renamed. I'll sort out my double redirects. Thanks. Exxon 16:30, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
  Fixed Exxon 16:38, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Why until you are renamed? Any work you do under Exxon will carry over to your new username you know? Normandy (talk) 16:48, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Is your name consistent with WP:UN? Many people think of "Exxon" as a trademark for a company that started out as the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, now known as ExxonMobil. Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 16:51, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Normandy: The name is a trademark and a company. It does not really break the UN policy, as I am not going to use it for promotion, but I don't want to risk it. A user with the name Exxon is also blocked on ES wikipedia for breaching the UN policy (somehow...), and I'm not going to risk that. Racepacket: See here. I have a request in to be named back. --Exxon 17:03, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Well if the crats were happy to rename you to a username that may violate the username policy then I'm sure they would wait to allow you to change it and not block you. You could have still edited, you didn't need to wait. Normandy (talk) 20:01, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Oh well, what's done's done. Thanks! --Orashmatash 20:15, 7 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Reliable sources

Hi! I just wanted to talk about this edit and offer some advice to judging whether something is a reliable source or not. For a source to be considered reliable it has a few tests to pass. Firstly, an indicator of reliability is that if lots or people are citing the source and talking about it. These people or other sources must be totally and completely independent of the source being tested. A source must be free of conflict of interest. Advertising revenue is not always objectionable, but loads of banner ads, Google ads type ads are not really going to play much of a part in a reliable source. I personally also dislike to cite sources that have none-transparent advertising as a significant portion of their revenue. All sites must be paid for but funding should be either self-funding or done in an open and transparent manner. Newspapers and magazines are going to have ads, but these sources exist in public view and so are sort-of peer reviewed. Peer review is a very important part of a reliable source, indeed it is a integral part of the WMF ethos. A fair source should also be one that treats the matter fairly. A source can contain wild claims and bias, but in such a case, we'd be talking about those claims being a part of the article topic matter. So we'd quote a white power group website for their opinions and then we can write about those opinions in the article citing the website. We'd also need to include reliable sources talking about them as well as having opposing opinions in the article. I think that's really all for now, I just wanted you to know that a person's self-claimed qualifications should not factor into it. Obviously this is different for academics within an educational structure such as a college or university. Although, even in such cases you'd be getting peer opinions as well. I'll leave it there. Hope you don't mind the advice. :) fr33kman 23:47, 30 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

WOAH! MiszaBot is going to have a hard time archiving that massive paragraph! Of couse I don't mind the advice! I (somehow) managed to read through it. I understand that the website isn't very reliable, as the author only claims to have a degree in history, and advertises. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know. Cheers! Yes, I can be very verbose at times. I have multiple times where my penchant for run-on sentences go on for an entire paragraph. Someone specifically opposed my steward election for this very reason. :) fr33kman 18:00, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Defaultsorts on "Foo at the Olympics" articles

Just FYI, these defaultsorts weren't really needed. The software has been changed so that case isn't relevant for sorting any more. There is probably some documentation that hasn't caught up with that, though. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:03, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Oh? I saw defaultsorts on other Olympics articles... It would probably help if you could explain to me which genre of article should be given a defaultsort. Could you do that for me? Thank you! --Orashmatash 21:04, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Sure. Here are the kinds of titles whose articles should have defaultsorts:
  • Titles that contain letters with diacritics or accents: defaultsorts should translate those letters into regular English alphabet letters. Examples: Stanisław Ulam, Claude Lévi-Strauss. This doesn't apply just to articles about people, though.
  • Titles that start with the words "The", "A", or "An": defaultsort should start with the second word of the title. Examples: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, A Brief History of Time.
  • Titles that are names of people where the family name is not the first word in the title: In most cases, defaultsorts should have the family name first. Examples: Nancy Grace, Édson Boaro.
    • A sort of exception to this is with Icelandic people: with a name like Snorri Sturluson, "Sturluson" is considered a patronymic rather than a family name, and they alphabetize names by the "first" or individual name.
    • Another exception is people with Arabic names. Those names often don't have surnames as we understand them, so you can usually just leave them to sort as the article title.
  • Titles of some people who have titles of nobility, such as dukes, etc. Examples: James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormonde, John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. However, this is not done for all nobility, and I'm not completely clear on when it should be done and when it shouldn't; it might be just for British nobility.
That's all I can think of right now. Are you familiar with when you might want different sorting for the same article in different categories? --Auntof6 (talk) 22:02, 10 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Colorado beetle

Please don't change the title of pages I've created without consulting me. I know what I'm doing. If I haven't used the enWP title I will have a reason. In this case the reason is simple: round the world the name 'Colorado beetle' is more often used, and in any case it was not originally a predator of potatoes. Please undo the change. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it. We are not obliged to use the same titles as enWP. Macdonald-ross (talk) 19:49, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me? I did not make the move because I could do it. I did it to match the EN titles, which I can do if I wish to since there is nothing that prohibits me from doing so. Also, the title change keeps the article up-to-date by reflecting the fact that it's a big potato predator. I am perfectly entitled to do things like this without consulting the author of the page. If the word 'Colorado beetle' is more often used, then I don't see any problem with having it as a redirect to the proper title. --Orashmatash 19:53, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Copying from other Wikipedia

Hi Orashmatash, thanks for sending me links for me to check out. :) I looked at them yet I still have a question please can you help me answer it?

  • Is it possible to also copy pictures from other Wikipedias?

Thanks for helping, WikiTheCat (talk) 18:41, 17 November 2011 (UTC)WikiTheCatReply

No problem. Using pictures from other Wikipedias is quite easy as long as the image is on Wikimedia Commons. We do not allow image uploads here, so we can't use images that are locally uploaded (i.e. Uploaded onto the English Wikipedia but not Commons). If you find that the image you want to use is on commons, you can just click the "Use this file on a wiki" button at the top or the side and it should give you a link to use. Hope this helps you! --Orashmatash 18:44, 17 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks again :) Another question... I would like to know how to change the colour of my user name please? WikiTheCat (talk) 18:36, 18 November 2011 (UTC)WikiTheCatReply

Do you mean your signature? --Orashmatash 18:37, 18 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Yes please? :) WikiTheCat (talk) 11:46, 19 November 2011 (UTC)WIkiTheCatReply

Well, to customise your signature, go to my settings and scroll down to the bit that says signature. Just enter the signature you want into the box and click the treat as wiki markup box so that the signature doesn't appear as code. Make sure it complies with the signature policy as well. Hope this helps! --Orashmatash 13:21, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Want to look at another template?

Take a look at the article Senedd. Something about the {{convert}} template in the first paragraph is putting a newline after its output. Is that something you can look at? --Auntof6 (talk) 00:03, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sure. It happened earlier today, the template is obviously having some sort of malfunction; I'll fix that later. I'll fix the article. Thanks for letting me know! --Orashmatash 00:04, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Great, thanks! Note that the problem could be in one of {{convert}}'s many subtemplates. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:06, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
All fixed. I'll check the template transclusions and see if it's happening elsewhere. Usually, things like this are caused by having <br\> tags at the very end of the template. I'll take a look and see what I can do. --Orashmatash 00:07, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hmm. I took a look at the template source code and there is a chunk of testing code in it. That might be what is causing it since it is happening everywhere the template it used. I'm trying to fix them all. --Orashmatash 00:17, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Related pages vs Other pages

I see that WP:MOS includes a section of "Related pages".

As you may know, Geisha is one example of a "WP:Good Article". Mirroring the format here, I used the heading "Related pages" in many new articles.

In response to your edit here, I modified this heading in as many articles as I could recall, including here and here.

You newest edit here frustrates my willingness to make guesses about what to do next. --Tenmei (talk) 18:41, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't really matter which one is used, in my own opinion. I clicked on Special:RandomPage and I got Akihito, which had 'Other pages', so I changed it according to consensus which was reached some time last year. I wasn't aware of said consensus until earlier today, so I apologise for that. This is a link to the mentioned consensus. I apologise again if I caused you any inconvenience there, I didn't really mean for you to go and change the header on a lot of articles. --Orashmatash 18:45, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for providing a link to that consensus thread. Although consensus may change, this clarifies the template I should be using for now. --Tenmei (talk) 19:06, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
No problem. Happy changing! --Orashmatash 19:06, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hello Orashmatash. I see you are a good user and I notified you that you must see meta:Steward handbook/email templates#Notification that identification is required. Please note that you must be of legal age (18 at minimum) to identify for sensitive access. This might help you in gaining special permissions such as Oversight, CheckUser and Steward. Good Luck --Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 17:52, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me for butting in, but that is a form letter and not a general policy. I've never seen age requirements mentioned in requests for those rights. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:21, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
