Swaziland/eSwatini

The country is apparently in the process of renaming itself. Our article was renamed, but I have renamed it back for now, because the rename is apparently not complete yet and because enwiki is holding off. See en:Talk:Swaziland#Is new name oficially confirmed? for more info. If/when we do rename, all related articles and categories should be renamed at the same time, and any templates that link to such articles should be updated. I recommend that we have a consensus before doing any of these changes. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:58, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

There is no further process for the country to rename itself from what I understand. There is no approval required from any higher authority than the king, so 'further process' will not be forthcoming. It's a done deal. We should keep the international names of countries up to date and the main resistance to doing so seems like trying to spite the king's wishes, which is an emotional reward (spite), not a logical one. Your mention of the "international names of countries" is exactly the point. Wikipedia articles use the words by which a subject is commonly known in English. Currently, that is still Swaziland. Most Wikimedia projects still use that name, and we should do the same for now. I will copy this conversation to Talk:Swaziland. This is a case of "Use common sense". If a country name or a taxon name or a chemical element name becomes obsolete, we update it immediately rather than stand on the "Most common name" rule which would obviously continue to be the old or obsolete name for some time. If Simple English Wikipedia is dragging its heels, then so are most other Wikipedias. I looked at the Wikidata entry: Although the Wikidata entry itself has been renamed, most of the Wikipedias who languages I can make out still use "Swaziland" (or the equivalent in their language). --Auntof6 (talk) 19:50, 21 April 2018 (UTC)

It's interesting that your first rationale is "because what someone else does", saves trouble of coming up with a better rationale usually... but it has only been two days and many projects may not have heard about the new name or had a chance to update... but a very few wikipedias are switching back to the old name and not sure if any others have gone to the length of locking the page on the outdated name like it is so important not to comply with the international request of a sovereign African nation as historically was done for other countries when they asked "Guys, please stop calling us this". It's like saying nanna nanna boo boo, we're gonna call you exactly what you don't like now, and you can't make us, and then lock the page down. Seems immature from just about any perspective for those whose heads are on their shoulders and not buried in trying to prove a point about refusing to call others what they wish to be called. The world knows the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic as Transnistria, the Republic of China is known as Taiwan, the Republic of Artsakh is known as Nagorno Karabakh. So who are we to insist that the name should be changed on the spot? - Let's not forget, the name of a thing defines its identity. Because they have specifically requested that Swaziland no longer be used as they consider it incorrect, several languages are changing, and this makes this project look like stubborn jackasses quite frankly just because some people insist it should look like stubborn jackasses with regard to information about Africa. • No, I don't agree. Overwhelmingly the country is known as Swaziland, and we have quite a few other pages where we keep the most widely understood title over a less understood title. It took a long time for English speakers to get used to Mumbai, and we can expect that it will take time for any change in a well-known place name. • Guidelines however, say that sources written after the name change carry more weight and if the majority after the change are using the new name then you should switch. And its not like its one or the other. Swaziland can easily redirect for those that don't realize its changed. This is what redirects will help with. Although it is commonly known as Swaziland among the less politically-informed people, it's correct name is Eswatini. Using common names may be useful for something like a product or advertising campaign, but not a country. Vermont (talk) 22:33, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
