Wikipedia translation of the week: 2021-49
The winner this Translation of the week is
Please be bold and help translate this article! The composition of Madagascar's wildlife reflects the fact that the island has been isolated for about 88 million years. The prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana separated the Madagascar-Antarctica-India landmass from the Africa-South America landmass around 135 million years ago. Madagascar later split from India about 88 million years ago, allowing plants and animals on the island to evolve in relative isolation. As a result of the island's long isolation from neighboring continents, Madagascar is home to an abundance of plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Approximately 90 percent of all plant and animal species found in Madagascar are endemic, including the lemurs (a type of strepsirrhine primate), the carnivorous fossa and many birds. This distinctive ecology has led some ecologists to refer to Madagascar as the "eighth continent", and the island has been classified by Conservation International as a biodiversity hotspot. As recent as 2021, the "smallest reptile on earth" was also found in Madagascar, known as the Brookesia nana, or nano-chameleon. Hi there!
Can you look at Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu when you have some time? I think it needs some fact checking. Derpdart56 (talk) 17:07, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

Problems
- MediaWiki 1.38-wmf.11 was scheduled to be deployed on some wikis last week. The deployment was delayed because of unexpected problems.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 7 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 8 December. It will be on all wikis from 9 December (calendar).
- At all Wikipedias, a Mentor Dashboard is now available at
Special:MentorDashboard
. It allows registered mentors, who take care of newcomers' first steps, to monitor their assigned newcomers' activity. It is part of the Growth features. You can learn more about activating the mentor list on your wiki and about the mentor dashboard project. - The predecessor to the current MediaWiki Action API (which was created in 2008),
action=ajax
, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch to the corresponding API module. [1] - An old ResourceLoader module,
jquery.jStorage
, which was deprecated in 2016, will be removed this week. Any scripts or bots using it will need to switch tomediawiki.storage
instead. [2]

Hello!
Hey Ferien, I recently joined Simple Wikipedia and I was wondering if you could show me around. I'm new to simplifying things so if you could check the articles I created and see if they are Simple Wikipedia appropriate. Thanks! Mwiqdoh (talk) 00:00, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
- Oh and I was also wondering, by "simplified" does it mean fewer words or simpler usage of words, or..? Like what exactly does simple mean? Thanks, Mwiqdoh (talk) 00:06, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @Mwiqdoh: Hello! I hope this page Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages will help you to know about simplification! Besides, Wikipedia:How to copy from another Wikipedia will really be helpful for you, if you are to create articles by copying from others! :) Haoreima (talk) 12:15, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Mwiqdoh: Sorry I somehow missed this and didn't notice your message. I'll check your articles now, and "simplified" can mean simpler, shorter sentences and also simpler words. The list of words we use is at BE 1500. Thanks! --Ferien (talk) 12:16, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- I've reviewed all the articles you've created. = no big problems as far as I can see.
- 2022 FIFA World Cup broadcasters –
- Sandy Iannella – although try to look at parent categories on the English Wikipedia to add the right categories over here. We don't have many gendered categories, so for example for the category "Italian women footballers" you can just add "Italian footballers"
- Ali Mabkhout – although again, try looking for parent categories, "Emirati footballers" doesn't exist here, so use "Emirati people". Then once we have enough Emirati footballers, we can create the category for that.
- Eran Zahavi – was ok after Eptalon simplified it, but if you think something in an article still needs simplification once you've created then don't add it in, only add it in once it's simplified.
- Tajik Americans –
- Uzbek Americans –
- Memphis Depay – I changed one sentence though to make it a little easier to read, see here.
- Sardar Azmoun – I split one sentence in half to make it easier to read, see here.
- Omar Al Somah – again, don't be afraid to add to "Syrian people" if "Syrian footballers" doesn't exist.
- David Rugamas –
- Norjmoogiin Tsedenbal – added to "Mongolian people" as "Mongolian footballers" doesn't exist.
- 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification (AFC) – I think some sentences may need splitting and simplifying on this one.
- There were just a couple of problems across all of them: you didn't link the articles to Wikidata. As you may be able to see in your notifications I have done this. All you need to do is look at the left of the page when you create it, look for the "Languages" header and then press "Add links". Enter "enwiki" on the top box and the page you are simplifying on the bottom box and then it is pretty self-explanatory from there. Also please remember to add attribution on the talk page. If you don't know how to add attribution I have described the process below (linked).
- Overall, you've done a great job of creating articles! I hope this feedback helps you improve even further. --Ferien (talk) 13:18, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your feedback! I splitted and simplified the article 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification (AFC) (see here). Let me know if it needs anymore improvements. Again, thanks a ton! Mwiqdoh (talk) 19:34, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello!
I'm writing with reference to the reply you had put on simple talk under my question (Moving articles manually). Thank you for mentioning about attribution. Could you briefly tell me how to attribute it on the talk page? I'm new to wikipedia and I don't know how to do it. I already made the page, but cited all the information to reliable sources. Jacebrent1 (talk) 12:41, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Jacebrent1: Hi! All you need to do when simplifying articles from the English Wikipedia is add {{translated page|en|PAGE NAME}} to the talk page of the article, although you will need to change PAGE NAME to the name of the page you copied. If you want you can also add the version number by adding version like this: {{translated page|en|PAGE NAME|version=VERSION NUMBER}} replacing VERSIONNUMBER with the version number. You can find the version number by going to the history of the article and pressing "Compare selected version" and adding the number after "&oldid=". However as far as I'm aware, adding the version number is not required. I hope this helps. --Ferien (talk) 13:04, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Ferien: Thank you very much. Could you check whether I did it correctly in these pages? - Batticaloa, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Chaves. Jacebrent1 (talk) 13:53, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Jacebrent1: Yep, you added attribution correctly in those pages. Just so you're aware: you don't have to ping me here, as this is my talk page I get notifications already. I don't get any extra notifications either, there's just no need to go to the extra effort to ping me here. Thanks, --Ferien (talk) 14:22, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

GRP
You should also add a request for the IPs used by GRP (the one harassing other users) on [[meta:Steward requests/Global] Nigos (talk) 15:36, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Nigos, sometimes I notice stewards are watching and they block the IPs, but typically there isn't a need to go to SRG as it gets backlogged often and by the time stewards globally block these IPs GRP has been long gone from them. The ones I block with the {{blocked p2p proxy}} template are blocked by the ST47ProxyBot on enwiki, whose blocks are later mirrored by Tks4Fish on a global scale so I don't see a need to report those either. Not to mention that onwiki reports give him that little extra bit of attention he is desperate for. Thanks, --Ferien (talk) 15:43, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
- Oh I see, thanks! Nigos (talk) 15:44, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Bad IP
I think the one who did bad to Whale last time is vandalism only account (IP address account). In such case, why don't you block it? It's repetitively doing, as evident in the talk page! Just curious! Haoreima (talk) 15:02, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
- Haoreima, I'll block the IP temporarily if they vandalise again, but the term "vandalism-only" isn't really used with IPs because multiple people can use an IP and so if I blocked it for a longer period of time I could be affecting innocent users. --Ferien (talk) 15:29, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
- One question! What is the real difference between roll back and simple undoing? I mean if a person is not Rollbacker, then can he undo some one's edits (more than 1 edit) at a single edit? Another thing, if Mr X's edits are
notbad, but after him, Mr Y did some edits, and I want to undo Mr X's, I can't undo only Mr X's, as Y's already overlapped it. In such cases, how shall I undo Mr X's edits only, without touching Y's? Haoreima (talk) 03:29, 12 December 2021 (UTC)- Not Ferien but rollbacking undos all of their edits until it reaches another editor. Assume I vandalize a page 6 times. A person with undo perms would have to undo every single one of my edits. Rollbackers can undo all of my edits at the same time.
- No, you can't remove a person's edits if they edited multiple times with only 1 undo (as far as I know). If X's edits were not bad and you want to undo X's, I assume you just cut X's part out and explain what you were trying to do. Kolva (talk) 03:38, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

- @Kolva: Editing? You mean simple editing like you and I do in normal edits? Or, any special edits, like any special form of undoing? I am really confused! Haoreima (talk) 04:00, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

- @Kolva: What if the edits were too complex? Like editing somewhere, first here and then there, in such a way, we are unable to rectify it properly. It happens a lot right! Haoreima (talk) 04:04, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- Not sure what to do then. I've never encountered that kind of vandalism before. Kolva (talk) 04:09, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

- (talk page stalker) re the term "vandalism-only" isn't really used with IPs. What about "Vandalism-only IP"? ;-) I've certainly used it before. SHB2000 (talk) 08:11, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
- @SHB2000: I've heard it used before too, but it's not really something someone is blocked for (and you'll notice it's also not a reason in VIP reporting on Twinkle even though vandalism-only account is) because IPs can be used by multiple people. And when a vandalism-only account is being blocked, it's usually blocked indefinitely because the acccount was created for vandalism. --Ferien (talk) 15:58, 17 December 2021 (UTC)
Hello Ferien! Do you have anything to tell more besides this discussion? Haoreima (talk) 12:55, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hey Haoreima. As Kolva said you can remove things in the undo, or you can use Twinkle to restore a specific version. --Ferien (talk) 16:24, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- So, you mean Twinkle is the only solution. Right? It can restore a specific edit which even a rollbacker can't undo! Right? Haoreima (talk) 16:25, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: Sometimes yes, or you can click a version in the history, press edit and then publish to save a certain version. It depends. Let's say one person vandalises a page multiple times it can be rolled back through the rollback feature or in Twinkle with the [rollback] button. Let's say two people vandalise a page, rollback can undo all of one person's edits but not the other person because it only reverts all the changes by one user. So you'd have to use [restore this version] in Twinkle or manually revert by saving an old revision, as I described above. --Ferien (talk) 16:29, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Should we move The Butterfly to The Butterfly (Iranian Film)?
Hi. Thank you for closing the RfD. There seemed to be consensus to move the name of the film so as to avoid confusion between that film and other more notable films. Blissyu2 (talk) 02:21, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

England
Hello Ferien! I saw some news using "England", some using "Great Britain", while some UK, for the same sport tournament. As there are {{UK}}, {{ENG}}, etc, which one is better to use for the list of participants like in the series of Polo tournament articles I am creating these days? I am adding templates in random for these 3! Haoreima (talk) 12:57, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hello Haoreima, I'm not sure whether there is an England polo team or a UK polo team myself so I'm not really sure what you could do here, sorry. --Ferien (talk) 22:14, 23 December 2021 (UTC)
- Ok, what about any sports team? I mean when sportsmen from your country go to international arena, do they go as a UK or an England representative? Or, are there both kind of representing facilities available especially for your country? Haoreima (talk) 03:39, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima (just SHB2000 logged out) From what I know, when "England" competes, usually there'll be "Wales" and/or "Scotland" competing as well. If there's a team that represents themselves as "UK" or "Great Britain", then it means all three countries + Northern Ireland. This isn't just for polo, but think it applies to all [international] sporting events. 124.171.130.171 (talk) 06:24, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

- I'll just add that for the big picture that the "United Kingdom" includes various territories overseas which are obviously not part of the British Isles. They include many oceanic islands and places which were used in various wars. Some, like Malta, have become entirely independent; others like the Falklands will always be disputed. The Channel islands are a lively topic at the moment. Macdonald-ross (talk) 11:25, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Just sad that there is a redlink, let see can we make it blue someday :) Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 10:04, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

- Thanks so much @SHB2000. Added an infobox so it looks a little longer now. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 10:17, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding the infobox :) Just in time (2.5 hours left in my time zone) SHB2000 (talk) 10:22, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia translation of the week: 2021-52
The winner this Translation of the week is
Please be bold and help translate this article! Luís Gonzaga Pinto da Gama (Salvador, June 21, 1830 – São Paulo, August 24, 1882) was a Brazilian Rábula (self-taught lawyer), abolitionist, orator, journalist and writer, and the Patron of the Abolition of Slavery in Brazil. Born to a free black mother and a white father, he was nevertheless made a slave at the age of 10, and remained illiterate until the age of 17. He judicially won his own freedom and began to work as a lawyer on behalf of the captives, and by the age of 29 he was already an established author and considered "the greatest abolitionist in Brazil". (Please update the interwiki links on Wikidata of your language version of the article after each week's translation is finished so that all languages are linked to each other.) - Just so you're aware, you'll be blocked if you continue to make unconstructive changes. --Ferien (talk) 21:26, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
He can either split 1970s–1980s into two and split 2010s–2020s into two or erase all the decades. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 15:23, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
1970s–1980s and 2010s–2020s look unconstructed. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 15:24, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
You can ask him on English Wikipedia to either erase all the decades or just split the 1970s–1980s and split the 2010s–2020s which ever is best. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 15:26, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Horror film
Dear mister that guy you just blocked wasn't doing this for him he was doing it just to help out another editor to find out what's wrong with the history section of horror film. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 15:16, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
Can you least help Arcahaeoindris find out what's with the history section of horror film I think it's the decades it's taking up so much space that's why it's too hard to read and navigate comfortably. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 15:19, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- The IP editor was trying to get someone else to share their views on the English Wikipedia, where they are blocked, it's disruptive. See w:WP:PROXYING. --Ferien (talk) 15:25, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
What are we supposed to do then? Spiffikdufdi (talk) 15:27, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
On the article horror film on English Wikipedia if all the decade sections on the history section where erased there would be so much room on there. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 15:31, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Spiffikdufdi: Message on the English Wikipedia if you're not blocked there. --Ferien (talk) 15:59, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
User Arcahaeoindris is the one you needs your help on English Wikipedia to erase all the decade sections to the history section of Horror film once all the decade sections are erased the history section won't be too long to read. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 16:21, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
I was wondering if you go to English Wikipedia to check up on him. Spiffikdufdi (talk) 16:24, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

Further IP hopping
Hi Ferien, I think I'm still being approached by the IP blocker who is egging me on to just edit on my page. Andrzejbanas (talk) 15:46, 29 December 2021 (UTC)

Rollback
hello @Ferien i believe i need Rollback permission to deal with vandalism or similar situations easier what do you think, am i qualified to have it here? 🌸 Sakura emad 💖 (talk) 17:04, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Sakura emad. Looking through your undos, you have quite a lot of them and the ones I checked all look good to me. And as you've also got rollback on ckbwiki, I think you are experienced and trustworthy enough to use rollback. --Ferien (talk) 17:35, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- well i'm going to request it :) 🌸 Sakura emad 💖 (talk) 18:01, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
