Need tracking category

change

Hey Ted. Could you please add <includeonly>[[Category:Wikipedia articles as assignments|{{PAGENAME}}]]</includeonly> to your template so that we can track your students' articles through that category? Osiris (talk) 07:58, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

You might want to transclude this template directly in the articles, rather than substituting it. I didn't realise that you planned to substitute it, so the <includeonly> tags are voiding the tracking. If you have a list of the articles you added it to, I can replace them all with AWB. Osiris (talk) 05:32, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Actually, nevermind, I've found the list through Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Ombox. Would you like me to un-subst the templates or just remove the includeonly tags? Osiris (talk) 05:34, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Umm, I'm not sure. What does "un-subst the templates" mean? I guess whichever you think is easiest. ELTted (talk) 05:38, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Haha sorry, I mean replace the markup that you've substituted with {{User:ELTted/template/school project}} - if that's okay? Osiris (talk) 05:41, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sure! Thanks! ELTted (talk) 05:46, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Roses

Belinda has given you some beautiful, lovely roses! Enjoy the scent!

At first when I entered your talk page, I was thinking of giving you a welcome message as you don't have one yet... But the way you speak and act somehow tells me you are a well-experienced user who has been here a long time! :P So please accept these fragrant roses instead. Why, thank you Bella. I do have a secret identity as another editor. ELTted (talk) 05:24, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Wow! I never knew it was you... :D To think I was so stupid! Haha. But I really think it's very kind of you to try to help your students in that way. It would be cool to have a teacher like you! Keep up the good work, Bella tête-à-tête 05:51, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Student tutorial

change

Hello ELTted, I noticed you asking some of your students to use Wikipedia:Student tutorial, I previously tried to fix up things for school users, I was just wondering what your opinion on that page was? I try to think how a student would find it but maybe you would know better as your students go through their procedure... Do you have any recommendations on how to improve that page? Or any suggestions on how to improve Wikipedia in general for student users? Kennedy (talk) 16:01, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think the tutorial is pretty good as it is. I've only had two editing sessions with this group so far and they haven't done much independent work yet. I'll get back to you after we've done a bit more. Based upon past experience, the main problems these students will have will be the odd copyvio, but more generally attribution. I haven't addressed attribution with them in detail yet. (But it is one of the goals for this class. Without understanding attribution, they can't really appreciate how open culture, wikis, or academic writing really works.) Thanks for asking, and I'll see how things go during the next week or two. I'll also be showing this to a group of teachers on Sunday. If I have time, I'll ask them, or maybe just send them the direct link later. Cheers! ELTted (talk) 21:08, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, its always good to get another's perspective. I'll be keeping an eye out anyway to see if theres anything I can do to help. Kennedy (talk) 12:33, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Local files

change

Hi Ted. I'm sorry, I had to delete some images that your students uploaded locally today. Usually with registered editors I would move them to Commons myself, but these had no license under which I could move them. It didn't look like they would be free to use, so we can't have them at Commons for reasons you're familiar with. I can give you a link to where I think they were taken from, and then if permission is found they can be reuploaded to commons.

Osiris (talk) 04:44, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Osiris. Apologies should be all mine. To be honest, the "no images" rule had become so deeply ingrained in my mind, I'd kind of forgotten about it. To be honest, I didn't think it was even really possible. I did not address that clearly enough with the whole class, just with individuals who asked for help adding images. Thank you for cleaning that up and I'll try to make sure it doesn't happen again. ELTted (talk) 06:28, 26 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Foundation

change

Did you know about this?

Perhaps it may be of some use? --Horeki (talk) 22:19, 27 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The use of SEWP at TMDU was mentioned here. You may want to know that I wrote:
"... a very different kind of strategy has marked the development of a pilot SEWP program at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) here and here. Strategic planning and context-building here and here were quite distinct from the IEP 2.0 proposal."
You and your students are a step forward in the growth of our SEWP project. It is timely to acknowledge this. I hope the Wikimedia Foundation can learn from some of the things you are doing well. --Horeki (talk) 15:41, 28 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the links, notes, and encouragement. My small group of students is enjoying this (most of them anyway). Based on past experience, very few will continue editing immediately after the course is done; they are simply overloaded with required courses and other studies directly linked to their majors. However, I do hope they will have gained a better understanding of Open Culture and attribution. A little real-world communication is something most of them lack in English. I view this as planting a seed and opening some minds. The results for students may be a long way down the road. In the near term, getting more language teachers involved is a realistic task. ELTted (talk) 02:09, 3 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
In my opinion, one of your sentences needs to be emphasized -- not only with students, but also in any talks you may have with other teachers. The arrow hits the center of the target when you explain:

"A little real-world communication is something most of them lack in English."

Keep up the good work. --Horeki (talk) 19:56, 5 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sanfrecce Hiroshima

change

I changed the name of one section heading from "Notable players" to "Notable achievements". Please see that I was careful to use the wiktionary-linked word in the first sentence of the section.

Also, I moved 20+ names to List of Sanfrecce Hiroshima players.

Does the change here need more words than I put in the change summary?

Are you willing to explain it to any who may be interested? I would guess that you already understand what I did and why? As an illustrative example, it may be helpful to compare Yokohama F. Marinos#Notable achievement? --Horeki (talk) 19:43, 5 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I'll talk about the changes with the students who are interested. Thanks! ELTted (talk) 05:56, 9 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please review the one word change here?

I am unsure about what is best in our SEWP context. I don't know how to identify the relevant factors. Maybe the piped link is good enough? --Horeki (talk) 15:16, 22 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sure, I think the piped link is good enough. Thanks, ELTted (talk) 21:19, 23 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Rollback & Patrol flags

change

Hello,

I have given you Rollbavk and Patrol flags. I did this more for practical reasons:

  • Rollback allows you to quickly undo a change of another user (which you see as unproductive). See this page regarding the guidleine for rollback.
  • Patroller means that the pages you create do not need to be patrolled (by smeone else). This patrolling is basically a check to find nonsense creations quickly.

Given that you are here for quite a while now, I wondered why you weren't given these rights earlier.--Eptalon (talk) 00:39, 27 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the tools. I think nobody added them to this account because I only use it infrequently for teaching. Probably just nobody noticed. No problem because I could patrol new changes from my much older main account. But, this helps. Cheers! ELTted (talk) 00:41, 27 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

A small success

change

ELTted — In your work with students, the main focus is on English language skills. At the same time, we need to recognize that the student contributions do help make SEWP better. For me, the small change here by User:TMDaiko was significant. The diff caused me to notice something we had overlooked.

As you know, the core city is an important feature of local government in Japan; but until TMDaiko's diff, I didn't notice that "core city" was only mentioned in the infoboxes which were copied from ENWP.

Over the next few months, I will try to do something about this oversight. This personal project started because of the sentence TMDaiko added at Kanazawa, Ishikawa. Thank you for encouraging TMD students to work with us. --Ansei (talk) 22:19, 28 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Great. I'm glad the students' perspective and knowledge is helpful. ELTted (talk) 21:37, 3 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Talk pages

change

I started discussion threads at Talk:Studio Ghibli#Selected works and at Talk:Takahiko Kozuka#Acronyms.

Is this helpful? unhelpful? premature in the context of a school project? --Ansei (talk) 23:37, 17 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Good to see

change

The work of one of your students encouraged me. You may have overlooked a small change here by User:TMDusui. The diff shows me that Mito Hollyhock was used as a pattern or template for something similar in a new article. In a practical way, this validates my investment of time and motivation in articles about the teams of J. League Division 1 and J. League Division 2.

Across the array of team articles, I had hoped to help develop a model format. It looks like this happened.

I hoped my work would be evaluated and re-used in creating new articles just like Matsumoto Yamaga F.C.. --Ansei (talk) 18:34, 20 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Confirmation of students' identity

change

Hello, I am afraid we have some sort of a mix-up here. Can you verify if the account Mr.long1528 belongs to one of your students? This account shows signs typical of spambots and has, as a result, been locked from logging in. Chenzw  Talk  07:47, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes. The user accidentally first logged in at JA Wikipedia. Then copied the same (rather immature, but I'll work on that) user info to simple wiki. Can you please unlock that account? ELTted (talk) 07:52, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I am really sorry for the mistake. The account have now been unlocked. --Glaisher (talk) 08:11, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Class project article MJD

change

I have asked to have this article quickly deleted. I realize it's one of your students' articles, but it doesn't show notability and hasn't been worked on in several weeks. I'm letting you know in addition to the author so that you can contest the QD if you want. --Auntof6 (talk) 11:24, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Auntof6. Yes, please do QD that. Sorry for the hassle. I usually go for a full sweep near the end of the class. That will be soon, but this page should go. Sorry, ELTted (talk) 11:40, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I deleted it. --Auntof6 (talk) 12:08, 16 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey there. Can I just confirm that Back Number, Takuya Eguchi, Pekochan and Miwa are part of your project? I will clean them up if you say it's okay - although my original intention was to delete Miwa as a machine translation, I won't if it's being actively worked on. Let me know what you want me to do. No urgency. Osiris (talk) 00:21, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi, they are definitely not. I have no connection with those users, but they do appear to be Japanese students. Two of them appear to have used student ID numbers as usernames. Big no-no! It is the last week of class here at most universities, and I suspect someone may have taken a stab at writing for Wikipedia as an "easy fun end of term" activity--not realizing how much lead in such an activity requires. Thanks for asking, but please do as needed. I tried to help out a bit, but I'm swamped! End of term! ELTted (talk) 06:19, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
In that case, I'll deal with them on the weekend. That'll give them the time they need. Thanks! Osiris (talk) 10:06, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

One final question: What do you want to do with May Disease? Osiris (talk) 09:38, 30 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

It's most definitely real and notable. I just ran into a problem with the new interwiki system. WJust tried again, but even logged into here and WikiData from my main account, I keep getting an error. ELTted (talk) 02:32, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sometimes I get it saying that I'm not logged in on Wikidata, is that what you're getting? What I do is visit Wikidata, log in, find the item I want by d:Special:ItemByTitle, and then add it manually. Osiris (talk) 05:29, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Japanese bands

change

Hi ELTed, here's a quick one for you. Young editors like to write about bands. When the editor is not fluent in English, and the band is not "western" then the articles will probably get quickly deleted. This does not help overcome the western bias. My problem is how do I know which articles are worth saving. For example when a young Japanese editor is writing about a Japanese band, it is almost impossible for me to know if the band is notable. For all I know it could be a garage band set up by a few mates. I need someone who can help me sort out the notable bands from the rest. Do you have any students who would be interested/capable of acting as a Japanese music consultant? Someone with enough English skills to communicate with me? Someone with an interest in the music scene that could answer my questions? Hoping you can help. --Peterdownunder (talk) 08:10, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

This sounds like a very interesting task. I'd be happy to try to help out. I may be able to get help from students at times. Let's pursue this idea. Do you have any specific articles in mind? ELTted (talk) 11:13, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Took a while to find one that needs expert opinion, Nakazima Kento. It claims he is an idle singer, which I presume is idol, I am glad I learnt English as a baby, I don't know how others cope. Most of the articles I found did have enwiki pages so it is just a matter of doing some simple translating. This Kento person however has no enwiki page. I would be interested in seeing if we could save it.--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:28, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh no! Not Sexy Zone! I'll ask my students, but... ELTted (talk) 05:25, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello, I'm a Japanese student in ELTted's class. I don't know much about Japanese pop music, but I might be able to help you out a little bit. About Kento Nakajima, he is a member of an idol group named Sexy Zone, which is pretty popular in Japan. Sexy Zone is probably notable enough to be an article, but I think an article just for this Kento person is unnecessary. --Tommy via.ca (talk) 08:20, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
That sounds like a good plan. We could copy the information about Nakajima into a new Sexy Zone article and delete Nakazima Kento. Or, we could copy the info and make Nakajim a redirect. A redirect means that [Nakazima Kento]] would still be a page, but if someone tried to go there, they would automatically be sent to Sexy Zone or maybe Sexy Zone (band). What do you think, Tommy? Let me know the best choice and Peter and I can help you do it. ELTted (talk) 08:25, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I see! Making Kento Nakajima a redirect sounds good. Maybe we can put him in the "member" section in the Sexy Zone article and explain about him a little bit there. --Tommy via.ca (talk) 08:33, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
A member section would be a good idea.--Peterdownunder (talk) 09:06, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have added some more about the band. Could someone check that it looks right, and that I have not misunderstood things. For example enwiki had "image song for the 2011 FIVB Women's World Cup" which I would think would be better translated as "theme song"--Peterdownunder (talk) 13:07, 24 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

RfD nomination of articles about Japanese junior colleges

change

An editor has requested deletion of one or more articles you created about Japanese junior colleges. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article(s) meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2014/Japanese junior colleges and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the article(s) during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:51, 27 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
