A few suggested changes if you art an administrator

Osiris, do you not think that a vocabulary of 850 words too little to explain everything? Secondly, the quality of articles in English Wikipedia is far much better than the ones in Simple Wikipedia. Thirdly, I have noticed that the English Wikipedia is the most vandalized of all Wikipedias and consequently most protected. Ritviksaharan (talk) 08:53, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello. You don't have to restrict your vocabulary to the 850 words chosen by Ogden. That is just a guide for increasing the readability level of your article even further. You can link complex terms to Wiktionary or another article, or explain them in parentheses. Vocabulary is only one of the things to consider when writing in Simple English: there is also sentence structure, length, grammar, scope, etcetera. You are free to use another language version of Wikipedia as a basis for your articles, but you need to translate them into simple English before you publish them. We have no use for copies of English Wikipedia articles because, well, the readers can just go to the English Wikipedia for that. Osiris (talk) 09:31, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Username Changing

Osiris, Is there any place I can switch my username? I want to switch my username from:

Aaqib Waramchoi --> Aaqib Gyder!

See you around. Also, did you see my talkback at my talkpage? Love to see you! --Aaqib Waramchoi (talk) 21:16, 7 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, follow the instructions on Wikipedia:CHU#General rename requests to make a request. Or you can wait about a month and do it globally at MetaWiki. If this is the only project that you contribute to, though, it doesn't matter which option you choose. Osiris (talk) 02:55, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Is this a good fact?

Hello. Sorry to bother you, but you're the "DYK check-and-go" user. This is my last hook if it's interesting. ... that in 1986, Andy Griffith suffered from Guillain–Barré syndrome that caused him to be unable to walk for seven months? --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 20:56, 8 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Some might find that pretty interesting. I'm probably not the right person to ask: I'm usually pretty permissive when it comes to deciding how interesting a hook might be, since I usually just focus on the sourcing, the wording and the quality of the article. You need to add "him to be" between "caused" and "unable" to make the hook read correctly. Osiris (talk) 03:26, 9 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. If Oregonian denies it, can you defend the fact. Thanks--TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 04:20, 9 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi I created the Philippe Coutinho page and just wanted to thank you for putting the date of birth and stuff in. First one I had ever done. How do you do that? Mikedovaston (talk) 22:01 9 June 2013 (UTC)

No problem! I just copied it from the other language versions, they all gave the same date. For the category, I used HotCat - instructions - which you can enable here. Or just look for and manually change the categories down the bottom of the text when you edit it. Osiris (talk) 05:28, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Just Saw Your Revision

I was looking at the Wiki article located here. I saw you deleted the link under the "Other websites" as spam. The website that was there adds directly to the conversation of panic attacks and looking at the website it provides a resource for those looking for information about panic attacks. Just wondering why you thought it was spam? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cepwriting (talkcontribs) 11:08 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Because over the time that I've been editing here I've become pretty good at spotting spam. You evidently wrote that website yourself, and your first edit here was to link to your own website. I know that it's yours because of the posts you've made about it on other sites such as YouTube, visual.ly and the Postloop Portal. Our policy governing external links is at WP:ELNO. Yours is a personal web page with no authority on the subject, so it does not belong here. Osiris (talk) 12:47, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Since you're so good, why does the first link in that section redirect to completely irrelevant websites and the second link point to a product page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cepwriting (talkcontribs) 12:58, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
He's so good, he removed those irrelevant links a few minutes before you commented. Chenzw  Talk  13:04, 10 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Template:Editnotice

Hey, Osiris. I know you're an active sysop, so I thought I'd ask you for a favor rather than use the editprotected template and disrupt all of you. Anyway, the editnotice template is kinda broken concerning images. Right now you...

  1. Have to use a file, and...
  2. Have to have the size as 25px?

That makes no sense to me. I think it should be like the English Wikipedia's editnotice, where you can choose whatever image you want and it can be any size. The syntax is here. Thanks in advance. TCN7JM 01:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I've altered it to allow for custom sizes, and the first point I think was already corrected. I'll have a closer look at the enwiki version later today. Osiris (talk) 03:26, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have also gone ahead to create the necessary system messages for editnotices to work - we had the templates, but the MediaWiki: messages weren't created... :P Chenzw  Talk  04:35, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, actually if you have the time, this is probably more your thing (I really don't quite get it how the editnotice system connects up). I get the namespace thing now that you've done it, but I would never have thought of that and I don't know whether there is anything else that needs working on. Ann Cook

Hello! Apparently Ann Cook article is actually about Ann Turner Cook. I got the difference from the English Wikipedia. No need to delete Ann Cook, but perhaps just a simple redirect to Ann Turner Cook. Thanks. --TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 02:25, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm pretty sure they're different people. I realise they have the same name and similiar birth dates, but that's about it. Because they have the same name, Turner Cook did keep popping up when I was researching about this other writer, but their work is totally different and they look different. Her website says that Turner Cook is a mystery novelist, whereas the one up for deletion is a writer of non-fiction. One is from California, the other is from Florida. List of India Test cricketers

I don't understand why you wish to support a list with over 300 red links, and only one blue link. It's of no use to the wiki, and (if seen at all) just lowers our reputation. The reason for my cutting the list but leaving a list of Indian Test cricket captains was the hope that the shorter list might attract a few more blue links, and anyway would be less ammunition for our critics. And, test cricket captains are intrinsically far more significant. It is rarely, if ever, that I see you make edits which puzzles me. I thought we had some consensus not to encourage long red-link lists of this kind. Oh, I can see some might think I should have formally proposed deletion, but I did not wish to delete the whole article. Macdonald-ross (talk) 06:27, 15 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry: it completely escaped my notice that you had altered the content prior to moving it. Not realising that you had done so, I copied over the list in order to keep it consistent with the contents of other lists (Aus, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Pakistan— all of which have been created by the same user). To be honest, none of these lists in any form are something that I think we need - mostly since the English Wikipedia is always going to contain almost exactly the same content. Now that they have been, though, I don't care what's done with them as long as a consistent format is used. Osiris (talk) 06:56, 15 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Lincoln predictions

As I wrote on 21:39, 13 June 2013, ‎ it is widely believed that Lincoln might have known of his assassination before he died. According to Ward Hill Lamon, Lincoln's friend and biographer, three days before his assassination Lincoln discussed with Lamon and others a dream he had, saying:

"About ten days ago, I retired very late. I had been up waiting for important dispatches from the front. I could not have been long in bed when I fell into a slumber, for I was weary. I soon began to dream. There seemed to be a death-like stillness about me. Then I heard subdued sobs, as if a number of people were weeping. I thought I left my bed and wandered downstairs. There the silence was broken by the same pitiful sobbing, but the mourners were invisible. I went from room to room; no living person was in sight, but the same mournful sounds of distress met me as I passed along. I saw light in all the rooms; every object was familiar to me; but where were all the people who were grieving as if their hearts would break? I was puzzled and alarmed. What could be the meaning of all this? Determined to find the cause of a state of things so mysterious and so shocking, I kept on until I arrived at the East Room, which I entered. There I met with a sickening surprise. Before me was a catafalque, on which rested a corpse wrapped in funeral vestments. Around it were stationed soldiers who were acting as guards; and there was a throng of people, gazing mournfully upon the corpse, whose face was covered, others weeping pitifully. 'Who is dead in the White House?' I demanded of one of the soldiers, 'The President,' was his answer; 'he was killed by an assassin.' Then came a loud burst of grief from the crowd, which woke me from my dream. I slept no more that night; and although it was only a dream, I have been strangely annoyed by it ever since."

Lincoln of course laughed it off but one wonders what Lincoln thought? I am sure he had long since taken a fatalistic attitude as to his office and his life. He know there were many who wanted to kill him and given the chance they would. Col. Crook who worked detail at the White House when Lincoln went to Fords Theater for the last time said something that got Crooks attention...Every evening he would say to Crook as he left or retired "goodnight Crook" ...On the night of April 14, 1865...He walked out to Crook and said "GOODBYE Crook". It really got Crooks attention Lincoln had never said that before. But it was just chance...Who knew, most of all Lincoln.

So, why is not allowed on here, I know it is silly to think that dreams can predict the future but it is on the Lincoln assassination on Wikipedia on English, so why not here? 15:28, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

Firstly, content you add to this site needs to be in your own words, instead of being copied from other websites and pasted here. It's not so much of a problem if you copy it from another Wikipedia, but it will still be reverted unless you put it in Simple English words. Your edits both here and on the English Wikipedia relate almost exclusively to conspiracy theories and heresay. That is fine, but you should always source such edits to reliable references and consider whether they fit into the article (our article on the Lincoln assassination is currently less than 100 words). Finally, try to avoid adding original commentary and analyses: the difference between what is written on the English Wikipedia and your passage above is quite clear -- to simply state that Lincoln had a dream is fine (adding the quotation is fine too, although it's not in Simple English). But you make original claims, calling it "evidence to suggest" that "he knew he was going to his death". Osiris (talk) 16:04, 15 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Template:Ma

I didn't have a chance to comment on this. I'm not against having a template of this kind, but I have chosen on this wiki to use "mya" as the contraction for "million years ago", instead of the English wiki "Ma". In text I have written the word out in full on the first occasion as, say, "250 million years ago (mya)", and later in the article "200 mya" (or whatever). My reason for this choice was that it is easier to remember what the contraction means than "Ma". This practice I have followed on several hundred pages in palaeontology and geology. The same argument holds for its use in boxes. Personally, I would like to see the template changed so that it produces my version on the page. IMO every template brought over should be examined for simplification, but I lack the technical know-how to do it myself. If you agree with my reason, would you be so kind as to arrange for someone to adjust this particular template code? Macdonald-ross (talk) 06:43, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I've just had a look. The template's function is to produce a link. It doesn't produce any form of contraction unless you ask it to. This is what it does:
{{ma|65}} produces "65 million years ago"
{{ma|65|mya}} produces "65 mya"
{{ma|65|ma}} produces "65 ma"
So the form of contraction, and the choice to use one, remains with the article text rather than the template. Osiris (talk) 06:55, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
How interesting, I had no idea. Thank you for the explanation. Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:24, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks & Articles I created

Hi, I would first like to show my appreciation for the recent edits you've made on some of the articles I created lately - thanks a lot, I went over every change you did and learned from it for future times. Secondly, user:Auntof6 wrote to me regarding these pages, saying (among other things) that " ...attribution. This is a legal requirement. That means adding a notice giving credit to the source of the article. You can do that by putting the {{enwp based}} template on the talk page of the article here. Please go back and add this to the articles you already created, and be sure to add it on future articles... " Now, I personally don't like the idea of doing that, not only because I already mentioned it the summary of the articles as I believe you saw, but also because that would have to be done to at least 90%, or in other words 90,000 articles in Simple Wikipedia. As a reliable admin and a long-time wikipeidan I'd like to know what's your take on this issue, please. Shalom11111 (talk) 22:26, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

No problem. The minimum requirement under the licenses used by Wikipedia is a link to where you got it from (§7 of the Terms of use). It can be a hyperlink (a wikilink) or a URL that will lead somewhere. Generally editors prefer you to specify the exact version from which you based it on. Mostly that's because titles can change (a link to en:Some film may eventually lead to something else if the target page is moved to en:Some film (1990) or something), whereas oldid numbers stay the same even if they're moved to a different title. So for example, I use the edit summary as well, but I give the URL to the permanent revision (example). If I forget to put it in the edit summary, I use the template on the talk page (I use {{based on|oldid=223546}} or {{based on|url=https://en.wiki...}}, but the one you've linked to is just as good). So it's up to you how you do it, but as long as there is a link then you've done what you have to do. Most of this is just about Wikimedia policy or local guidelines, it's much more strict than the legal requirements. Osiris (talk) 03:43, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay I see, thanks that information was really helpful! I like (and am used to it from Hebrew wikipedia) the summary option much better than the page talk one, so in future times I'll use the specific link method you mentioned. But in this case do you think it would be sufficient if I go back to the articles I created, make a minor change and then write in the summary "based on [name of the enwiki article and a link to its proper version]"? Shalom11111 (talk) 04:33, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, that's perfectly fine. Osiris (talk) 04:36, 21 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the late reply, I've been away for a few days. I don't know what advice to give here, since I don't know what's going on. Generally speaking, it's probably best to raise the issue locally on the community forum. If that doesn't solve anything and a large part of the community thinks that it's serious enough, you could raise the issue on Meta-Wiki. Osiris (talk) 04:41, 20 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Issues with 81.229.87.120

There seems to be something very wrong with the above editor:

The edits all smell of long-term abuse and advertising. Can you help me out with this? Doesn't help that the relevant articles (Charlie Strap and Froggy Ball (film), Charlie Strap, Froggy Ball and Their Friends, Charlie Strap and Froggy Ball Flying High) have been heavily edited and were created by editor(s) residing in the same country (Sweden). Yeah, the Charlie Strapp vandal. It's LTA- probably from svwiki originally. I needed that stuff for something very important and it has taken me all day to make it. I was going to move it all to its original place when I was done, but the wreork was rudely interrupted without even a WARNING so I couldn't save it anywhere else, and now I have lost it all. All I ask is for you to restore the page until I am done (tomorrow) then you can have it deleted. It was in userspace and was clearly labelled Sandbox so I can't see why it was deleted in the first place.

Thanks, hope you take this into consideration. 2.216.126.148 (talk) 21:51, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Rachel. Thank you for responding. I asked you on your talk page what the purpose of that page was, since you had had several user pages deleted before by other administrators and since you don't appear to be engaged in editing articles here. You did not respond, and kept on editing, so I deleted the page. I deleted it for the same reason the other pages were deleted for. No work is lost: I'll happily send you a copy of the page by email, or I can restore it temporarily so that you can save it somewhere else. If I restore it, it will be until you have confirmed that you've saved it. Unless of course you are actually going to use it for a Simple English Wikipedia article this time. If not, which option would you rather? Osiris (talk) 22:02, 30 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I would have happily responded beforehand but I forgot I wasn't logged in, so I wasn't able to recieve or see the message. if you could restore the page that would be fantastic, I will let you know when I have it saved. And I have only previously used my userspace for these things because I thought userspaces were fine for tests - but I will let this be a lesson.
