Hello. What script have you been using to disambiguate links ("Picked meaning...")?  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  05:17, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

A mixture of Dabsolver and ~jason's tools. I posted something about them at Wikipedia:Simple talk#Disambiguation tools and there's a full list at WP:DPL. Osiris (talk) 05:20, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Request for multiple accounts for group

Thanks for your help. I'm learning the ropes. It appeared that my original posting had been vandalized by User:97.89.229.182 on April 3rd. Thank you for moving my post to the correct location. I was requesting multiple accounts in order to avoid having an IP blocked as per the advice I found here: http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Schools/Teachers'_Guide#Individual_student_usernames Thanks again! I got a day! Thanks!

Hi Osiris,

Thanks for the cheerful message. I do appreciate it. I hope I'm not getting that stressed about it, but my patience is beginning to draw to an end. In the grand scheme of things, a hundred or so pointless and poorly written football stubs is not the end of the world. At some point, it does become a problem though. I considered just asking for a block of some editing restrictions, but sometimes people think I am too quick to jump to that point. I'll give Japan Football another day or so and then ask for a short block if the behavior doesn't change. All the edit summaries to demonstrate how disruptive JF is being and not listening. He may or may not be the same as User:Nameless_User but the results are the same; thousands of pointless stubs of questionable accuracy that don't get maintained, create incorrect links, and go out of date.

But, thanks for making it my day,

Gotanda (talk) 03:12, 8 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I haven't been following the situation closely enough, but given that he doesn't seem to be communicating, I doubt a block would do much to change his behaviour. Proposing a restriction on his editing would be more effective in my opinion. You're very welcome for the day and thank you for dedicating your time to clean up the mess. In re:Your speech in my talk

See Special:PrefixIndex/Template:Infobox and see how many single-used templates are there then undo the deletion.--Kc kennylau (talk) 01:58, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi Kc. I can tell you right off the bat (from a recent compilation of data) that there are six infobox templates with only one transclusion, not including the ones you've just made. However, that isn't really relevant to my question. Each of those six are templates that can be used on more than one article (which is the purpose of a template and was my question to you). So again: Other than Methane, how many articles is {{Infobox methane}} likely to be used on? Osiris (talk) 02:09, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
What is right off the bat? (I'm a Chinese) Sorry, I did not check any of the Special:PrefixIndex/Template:Infobox. And I will revert my edit.--Kc kennylau (talk) 03:19, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, it means "straight away". Osiris (talk) 03:20, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Just pointing out

(G4:) Creation of content that is already deleted. It includes an identical or similar copy, with any title, of a page that was deleted, after being discussed in Requests for deletion, unless it was undeleted due to another discussion or was recreated in the user space. Before deleting again, the Administrator should be sure that the content is similar and not just a new article on the same subject. This rule cannot be used if the article was only quickly deleted with no request for deletion.

Added emphasis of the key points are mine there. Though very likely if it was the same article, A4 still applies - A4 has no restriction such as G4. You can A4 the same article all day so long as it still meets the criteria, but can only g4 after an RfD. --Creol(talk) 09:46, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oh, that was a mistake then. Thanks for pointing that out. Osiris (talk) 09:50, 10 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Connections for Template:Convert/incompatable

Hi, Wikid77 here. Thanks for contacting me about the attempted rename of Template:Convert/incompatable for incompatible units. The intent was to display a superior error message, better than before, and reject mixing incompatible units, such as miles and kilograms (should mix with kilometres). The bad mixes are not yet detected, so the following conversions run, without error messages, and produce nonsense results of incompatible units:

  • {{convert|23|lb|km}} → results redacted - nonsense
  • {{convert|34|km|lb}} → results redacted - nonsense
  • {{convert|12|kg|mi}} → results redacted - nonsense

However, as you know, people are copying subtemplates from the English Wikipedia, without considering if the subtemplates here are already the better version, improved beyond the English Wikipedia operation. Some improvements are made here, first, due to less chance of disturbing so many thousands of articles as on English Wikipedia. Ideally, improvements made here would be transfered back to enwiki, but due to distractions, the follow-through is not always done. I am sorry that the subtemplates do not reject invalid mixes of pounds/km or miles/kilograms, but all the edit-protected subtemplates means that admins on enwiki must be involved with improving the subtemplates and that has not worked yet. I will see if there is a way to update Convert to reject the invalid mixes of units. -Wikid77 (talk) 06:00, 12 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

For Osiris for all the extra work in helping to make it easier for school groups to make contributions. As a former teacher myself, its great when you feel that someone is supporting your work. Thanks from the rest of us. Peterdownunder (talk) 11:40, 12 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Here's the template, Template:Classproject it says three days, I think that should be at least 14 days, but no one is going to check the activity anyway. Anyone that does probably needs to do some stub expanding instead.--Peterdownunder (talk) 06:30, 14 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Great! Thanks for that. I'll try and fix it up a bit. Osiris (talk) 23:53, 14 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category:Craters

Is this category intended only for craters on Earth, or also for craters on the moon and other places? --Auntof6 (talk) 00:17, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Er, that was something I asked myself when I started adding pages to it. I stopped because I wasn't sure, but I don't see why not. I think most you'll find will belong to Category:Impact craters anyway. If you think it's fine, I can finish it off and add them...? Osiris (talk) 00:23, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Just realised that the only article I've put in that category actually belongs in the subcategory as well. Should I just merge the two? Osiris (talk) 00:28, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I guess they could be merged. There are one or two more in Category:Moon. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:32, 16 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Oops, sorry!

I think I undid a change of yours on List of Maharlika Broadcasting System stations. I thought the original author removed that category; I didn't realize you had done it. If you want to remove it again I promise I won't put it back again! --Auntof6 (talk) 09:03, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

It's okay, I was going to delete it, but it's not a big deal. I might delete it later when the author has finished. I doubt much more will be added to it. Osiris (talk) 09:06, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Craters

At the moment we have Category:Impact craters, but what we need is:

  • Landforms
    • Craters
      • Volcanic craters
      • Calderas
      • Impact craters

Previously we just had 'craters', but I take it we are sold on the idea of more specific categories? That seems to be the outcome of the past month of category work. Macdonald-ross (talk) 18:49, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I see we have them all except Calderas. Macdonald-ross (talk) 18:51, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Yeah I created Craters a few days ago but I ended up deleting it because there wasn't much to put in it (or so I thought). What you've done looks good though. Osiris (talk) 23:14, 18 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Check Wikipedia is keeping me busy with lots of gnome work.. now if they could just define the topics a bit better than "Article with and no" so I had some idea what was wrong with some of these.. --Creol(talk) 07:53, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hm I haven't used it yet, I'll have to try it out. Osiris (talk) 07:58, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Creol, that's one of the reasons I've been trying to get the CheckWiki translation page set up and working. Over on enwiki, we improved the error descriptions and I'd like to get that for Simple as well. I'm going to give it a few more days to see if the page I set up starts working the way it should, then I'll bug them again. (See here for details.) In the meantime, you could look at either translation page to see what the error is actually saying. --Auntof6 (talk) 10:37, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why?

Why did you delete it? Why? Why? 195.169.7.82 (talk) 10:39, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why did you write it? -- Tegel (talk) 10:41, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ash Ketchum Infobox

I wanted to let you know I undid your revision in Ash Ketchum, specifically the infobox, which was kind of misleading. It made Ash look like a type of Pokemon, but he's an anime/video game character, instead. -- Tumthe3 (talk) 00:59, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ah, good. I see what you mean. Thanks for letting me know. Osiris (talk) 01:45, 20 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Using the template {{As of}}

I just came across this change you made. I had made similar changes, but I changed my mind about them and have been removing them when I see them. My thinking is as follows:

  • A statement like "In 2004, 1,000 people lived there" doesn't become dated, because the date is stated. One might want more recent information, but at least you know the date of the information given. Therefore, it does not need to be tagged.
  • A statement like "1,000 people live there" becomes dated, because the population of a place almost certainly changes over time. Therefore, this could be tagged.

What are your thoughts?

On a related note, today I brought {{as of?}} and {{update after}} over from enwiki. Both of these categorize articles that use them. In view of all the work you did on error categories, would you take a look and see if they categorize correctly? Thanks! --Auntof6 (talk) 11:44, 25 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Cool! {{Update after}} looks very useful. From its documentation page, I get the feeling that {{as of?}} was intended to be a kind of maintenance template similar to {{when}}—asking for a time frame to be included. I would consider an item tagged with it as something that needs to be fixed, so I would probably categorise it to a maintenance category like Category:Vague or ambiguous time. It's weird that the enwiki version doesn't do that. Its /doc page gives "Recently" as an example, which I would normally tag with {{when}}, but maybe the intended usage is slightly different.
The general idea of the {{as of}} template, from what I know of WP:ASOF, is that you're meant to tag whatever is intended to be the most recent data available. So if the author's intentions when giving the 2004 figure was to give the most recent data available, then it would be tagged for eventual replacement. Though I don't really know how well this system is likely to work on a wiki of this size. Personally, I pretty much never use those templates—the only reason I did it in this case was because the 2004 category had been deleted as an empty "maintenance category" (which is not what it is). Osiris (talk) 12:16, 25 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Following up on this, I've opened a thread on en:Wikipedia talk:As of to determine whether it's possible to merge the two (as of?/when?) templates. Osiris (talk) 06:10, 27 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Becoming an Administrator

I'm wanting to become an Administrator on Simple English someday, not just create articles. At this moment I'm an amateur at reverting vandalism, but my computer is five years old and I need to really know how to not just revert vandalism but also use the Twinkle. I hear Twinkle works best with Firefox. And I wanna also be taught how to block editors who cause disruption and those who vandalize. I cannot afford a new computer at this point so I usually take the library. Angela aka September 1988 (talk) 12:00, 25 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fuzzy logic

Sometimes there are good reasons for going slow.

Are you familiar with the concept of "fuzzy logic" -- not on/off, yes/no, black/white? The effort to understand Japanese history sometimes requires a kind of fuzzy thinking and strategy. For example, please compare the dates cited in these reliable sources:

Despite the differences, each is accurate, authoritative, defensible — but not deciding.

According to en:Muromachi period and en:Template:History of Japan, the dates are 1337 to 1573. The single cited source here does not confirm 1337:

These were some of the factors in my decision to go slow in developing Template:History of Japan and articles about the Kemmu restoration (1333–1336), the Muromachi period (1333–1573), and the Nanboku-chō period (1336–1392). --Horeki (talk) 16:56, 27 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
