RfA
RfA There is an RfA over at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ferien. I have nominated you for adminship because you are a believably proficient editor here. This does not mean you have admin rights yet, just that you have been nominated. Have a good day! C4Bomb2024 Talk 06:43, 1 June 2021 (UTC) |
Did you want to be nominated for adminship? C4Bomb2024 Talk 10:19, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
- @C4Bomb2024: Hi. Thanks for the nomination but I was thinking about running for adminship in a few months at the very earliest so I don't think I'm going to accept. Regards, --Ferien (talk) 11:40, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ok, I’m good with that then. C4Bomb2024 Talk 11:57, 1 June 2021 (UTC)
- @C4Bomb2024: I have declined the nomination. Thank you for nominating me but I don't think I'm ready just yet. Regards, --Ferien (talk) 14:50, 1 June 2021 (UTC)

Oof. I also saw a help request like this in my talk page. Would it also be awkward to see a comment in WP:RFP/R from him? Darubrub (Let me know) 15:40, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @Darubrub I would say yes. Unfortunately it does not carry any weight. But then again, it is not a consensus vote, it is an admin decision. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 16:00, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- It's annoying but, as PotsdamLamb says, it's admins that make the final decision and so it shouldn't have an impact. --Ferien (talk) 16:58, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
Question related to a wikipedia article
Hello sir, I want to ask if this page is allowed to be kept when its already deleted and salted form main wikipedia after it was proved that articles about subject are paid. Check this and and this. I see the same page active under different languages as well without any notability. JAHANZAIBARIF (talk) 21:56, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) @JAHANZAIBARIF I am in agreement with it being deleted on the other wikis. It is not notable. All of the links are dead that would show any notoriety. I have nominated it for deletion. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 22:17, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- @PDL Ok sir. Please fix the User talk link in your comment for quick deletion. Thanks JAHANZAIBARIF (talk) 22:37, 4 June 2021 (UTC)
- @JAHANZAIBARIF There is no talk link in the QD notice, so I am not sure what you are referring to. If you click on my name in the notice, it will take you to my page, which is what it is supposed to do. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 22:45, 4 June 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia translation of the week: 2021-23
The winner this Translation of the week is
Please be bold and help translate this article! A breakthrough infection is a case of illness in which a vaccinated individual becomes sick from the same illness that the vaccine is meant to prevent. Simply, they occur when vaccines fail to provide immunity against the pathogen they are designed to target. In April 2021, the CDC reported that in the United States there were 5,814 COVID-19 breakthrough infections, and 74 deaths, among the more than 75 million people fully vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus. (Please update the interwiki links on Wikidata of your language version of the article after each week's translation is finished so that all languages are linked to each other.) Headquarters
Turns out, it's even stranger than I thought! The infoboxes were copied from the English Wikipedia, so the "misinformation" came from there. In fact, if you look at the Serbian Wikipedia article and check the English one, you'll see that it also has the same fake headquarters writing (I'll bring that up to ENWiki editors, so you might have to check the page's history if it gets removed). Cheers! Etoza (?) 18:59, 7 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Etoza: Hmm, that's interesting. If you go to w:Wikimedia Foundation and Ctrl+F "miami" you won't find anything so as you said it must have been some sort of factual error vandalism that we copied across... Thanks! --Ferien (talk) 19:54, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 June. It will be on all wikis from 10 June (calendar).
Future changes
- The Wikimedia movement uses Phabricator for technical tasks. This is where we collect technical suggestions, bugs and what developers are working on. The company behind Phabricator will stop working on it. This will not change anything for the Wikimedia movement now. It could lead to changes in the future. [1][2][3]
- Searching on Wikipedia will find more results in some languages. This is mainly true for when those who search do not use the correct diacritics because they are not seen as necessary in that language. For example searching for
Bedusz
doesn't findBędusz
on German Wikipedia. The characterę
isn't used in German so many would writee
instead. This will work better in the future in some languages. [4] - The CSRF token parameters in the action API were changed in 2014. The old parameters from before 2014 will stop working soon. This can affect bots, gadgets and user scripts that still use the old parameters. [5][6]

Apology
Hi Ferien, Just wanted to apologise for earlier - I didn't realise the article had an infobox otherwise I wouldn't of reverted you so sorry for that, Thank you for adding the updated version and thank you for your contributions to the project too :), Take care and stay safe, Warm Regards, –Davey2010Talk 22:43, 8 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Davey2010: No worries. :) Regards, --Ferien (talk) 05:37, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
Empty maintenance categories
You do not have to put QD requests on the empty maintenance categories. QD requests will appear on those automatically. I know someone (you?) recently said they weren't seeing them, but when I went to process them I saw both your requests and the automatically generated ones. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:57, 9 June 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, that's strange. I went into a completely different browser and loaded the CAT:QD page and it didn't appear. I will just stop tagging those now. --Ferien (talk) 10:16, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Logged-in users on the mobile web can choose to use the advanced mobile mode. They now see categories in a similar way as users on desktop do. This means that some gadgets that have just been for desktop users could work for users of the mobile site too. If your wiki has such gadgets you could decide to turn them on for the mobile site too. Some gadgets probably need to be fixed to look good on mobile. [7]
- Language links on Wikidata now works for multilingual Wikisource. [8]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Future changes
- In the future we can't show the IP of unregistered editors to everyone. This is because privacy regulations and norms have changed. There is now a rough draft of how showing the IP to those who need to see it could work.
- German Wikipedia, English Wikivoyage and 29 smaller wikis will be read-only for a few minutes on 22 June. This is planned between 5:00 and 5:30 UTC. [9]
- All wikis will be read-only for a few minutes in the week of 28 June. More information will be published in Tech News later. It will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [10][11]

Comments on RfD pages
It is not necessary to comment "remember that this is not a vote" on RfD discussions. The closing admin can see that the person didn't give any particular reason, and they will take that into account. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:17, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ok, I just wanted to let them know that RfDs are not a vote for future discussions. --Ferien (talk) 05:39, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
Protection
I saw my sandbox has been vandalized 3 times. Can I protect the sandbox from being edited by anonymous and users who arnt extended confirmed? Haoreima (talk) 20:03, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: We don't have extended confirmed protection/users on this wiki. However, as User:Haoreima/sandbox is in your user subpage, you can request for it to be semi-protected, so IPs and users with under 10 edits can't edit it. You can request semi-protection on User:Haoreima/sandbox on the administrators' noticeboard or on an admin's talk page. Semi-protection should be enough protection for your sandbox. Regards, --Ferien (talk) 20:08, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- What happened to your talk page? All the talks are gone under a hidden way! Seems unusual like before. Haoreima (talk) 20:13, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: I archived it in late April. I also changed the font to Calibri. Can you explain what you mean by "All the talks are gone under a hidden way!"? --Ferien (talk) 20:38, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- Your talk page looks exactly similar to that of MacDonald Ross. It's explicitly different from mine, or others'. If you change your desktop view edition to mobile view edition, it's clearly visible that all the talks (not so archived till now) we're all hidden under the column "Add new discussion". It's only after pressing the long blue color button "Read as Wikipedia page", I can see all the hidden talks, even this current one. For better knowledge, compare yours with mine. Haoreima (talk) 20:53, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: I see what you mean. How odd. I haven't changed anything to make it like that. Was it readable without having to press "Read as wiki page" before? --Ferien (talk) 20:56, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- No, everything remains hidden until I press the button. Haoreima (talk) 21:12, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- Ok, @Haoreima: have you ever been able to read talk page messages of mine without pressing "Read as wiki page"? I recall being able to on my phone recently. --Ferien (talk) 21:13, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- Till yesterday, everything was fine. I regularly look at your talk page even when I don't talk with you. It's only today, everything got mess up. As of now, without pressing the button, I can't see or read. Haoreima (talk) 21:21, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

- Your case is slightly different from MacDonald Ross'. In his, two talks are already seen. But within the second one, a lot of talks are still hidden. But in your case, seems like there's no talk active in the page. Because all are hidden. Haoreima (talk) 21:24, 16 June 2021 (UTC)
- One thing I can suggest you is to check the entire content of this very talk page, from A to Z (including even a single template or a tag). That will really help you to understand what is wrong with the page! Edit history check up will also be helpful. Haoreima (talk) 05:54, 17 June 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia translation of the week: 2021-24
The winner this Translation of the week is
Please be bold and help translate this article! Tutankhamun's trumpets are a pair of trumpets found in the burial chamber of the Eighteenth Dynasty Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The trumpets, one of sterling silver and one of bronze or copper, are considered to be the oldest operational trumpets in the world, and the only known surviving examples from ancient Egypt. The trumpets were found in 1922 by Howard Carter during the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb. The bronze trumpet was discovered in the tomb's antechamber in a large chest containing various military objects and walking sticks. The silver trumpet was subsequently found in the burial chamber. Both are finely engraved, with decorative images of the gods Ra-Horakhty, Ptah and Amun. The silver trumpet's bell is engraved with a whorl of sepals and calices representing a lotus flower, and the praenomen and nomen of the king. The bronze trumpet may in fact be made of copper; the metal has not yet been analysed. Similar looking trumpets feature in Egyptian wall-paintings that are usually, though not always, associated with military scenes. Silent for over 3,000 years, the trumpets were sounded before a live audience of an estimated 150 million listeners through an international BBC broadcast aired on 16 April 1939. The trumpets were played by a bandsman, James Tappern of Prince Albert's Own 11th Royal Hussars regiment. The recording was recently featured, and can be heard on the BBC Radio 4 program Ghost Music. Rex Keating, who presented the 1939 broadcast, later claimed that during a rehearsal, the silver trumpet shattered, and Alfred Lucas, a member of Carter's team who had restored the finds, was so distressed he needed to go to hospital. Due to their fragility, it is unlikely the trumpets will be played again in any official musical reconstructions. New article
Hello pal! I want en:List of Manipuri kings to be written in simple wiki too. Since the article is about the list of names, do we still need it to be simplified? Or, can we just copy and paste it? Haoreima (talk) 12:58, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- And what about en:Template:Kingdom of Manipur? Haoreima (talk) 13:11, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- No. You should not copy and paste it for a couple of reasons:
- Copyright - although you can attribute it in the edit summary
- The fact that simple wiki is meant to be written in Simple English and normal wikipedia isn't written in simple english
- Avoid just listing names, as this wiki isn't solely a wiki for lists
- Hope this helps. SHB2000 (talk) 14:15, 21 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: I had a look at w:List of Manipuri kings. It shouldn't be copy and pasted completely. I feel like all sections apart from the lead and Burmese rule could be copy and pasted without simplification. For the other sections, I think simplification is necessary. You'll need to remember attribution, though.
- @SHB2000: Sometimes, stubs on enwiki can actually be simple enough and A3 requests can be denied if this is the case. A3 is for copy and pastes from enwiki that are complex.
- There have been occasions where I have only needed to make a couple of adjustments to a copy of an enwiki article before publishing it here. For example, List of postcode districts in the United Kingdom.
- Hope this helps,

British English
I don't find any difference between English and British English in the wikipedia user language settings. Now, I have set mine in British English. Do you find any difference? Haoreima (talk) 07:11, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Haoreima, this is probably because only the interface is changed into British English, not the article. Also in the interface I can't imagine there being many differences between American and British English, which is probably why you can't notice it. Best regards,--Ferien (talk) 09:09, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
- Hello pal! I have started editing in wiki data. Now, I am connecting some pages at inter wiki. Please check if I am doing right or wrong! Thank you. Haoreima (talk) 18:02, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: Yep, they seem fine. Just some advice though: you don't need to spend time adding the Simple English descriptions, labels and aliases. I believe people reading in Simple English get the English descriptions, labels and aliases automatically. Regards, --Ferien (talk) 18:05, 22 June 2021 (UTC)

- Why so? I mean if simple English description isn't added, and if general English description is added only, then will the description appear in the simple English wikipedia article? Haoreima (talk) 18:09, 22 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: I've tried viewing Wikidata pages in Simple English before. If there isn't a Simple English description, alias or label then the English one will appear. I can only assume that if you viewed short descriptions here it would take the English one on Wikidata. You can add the Simple English descriptions if you want, you just don't need to. - @Haoreima: Ok, you can create a new item to link them together, as a disambiguation page on Wikipedia. You can put the description in English as Wikimedia disambiguation page. --Ferien (talk) 06:09, 23 June 2021 (UTC)

- But one thing, wiki data item for templates on wikipedia are asked to link at least 3 connections. What about minimum no. for disambiguation? Haoreima (talk) 06:11, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- @Haoreima: I'm not aware of a minimum number of connections for disambiguation pages. I think the minimum amount of pages that need to be connected on any Wikidata item is
onezero as many Wikidata items don't have any connections to pages on Wikipedia. --Ferien (talk) 06:14, 23 June 2021 (UTC)- (talk page stalker) I believe you are correct. I believe Wikidata is meant to be a general database of knowledge, not just for Wikimedia projects. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Auntof6 (talk • contribs) 06:15, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, if you go to wikidata:Special:Random and open up several pages, you'll find a majority of them don't have links to any Wikimedia project. --Ferien (talk) 16:10, 23 June 2021 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) Setting the MediaWiki Interface to British English just changes the links on your end. It does not affect the page content or article content being displayed. --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 03:06, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

I saw no bug in this wiki. Then, I am confused why there's malfunctioning in the mni wiki template. Haoreima (talk) 07:05, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
Well, as you don't see neither dot nor question mark, what do you see? Haoreima (talk) 07:07, 24 June 2021 (UTC)
- Haoreima Sorry I meant to say I saw the box with the ? in it. See mni, it seems to be fixed now. --Ferien (talk) 15:28, 24 June 2021 (UTC)

Please be bold and help translate this article! The Sumidouro State Park (Portuguese: Parque Estadual do Sumidouro) is a state park in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The remains of the first human inhabitants of Brazil were found in the park area in the early 19th century, along with bones of now-extinct megafauna. The main attraction is the Gruta da Lapinha, a large limestone cave. Special:EditGrowthConfig
. [14] - Wikisources have a new OCR tool. If you don't want to see the "extract text" button on Wikisource you can add
.ext-wikisource-ExtractTextWidget { display: none; }

Future changes
Threshold for stub link formatting
,thumbnail size
andauto-number headings
can be set in preferences. They are expensive to maintain and few editors use them. The developers are planning to remove them. Removing them will make pages load faster. You can read more and give feedback.- A toolbar will be added to the Reply tool's wikitext source mode. This will make it easier to link to pages and to ping other users. [18][19]

UK Weather
- How is the weather in UK? In Vancouver, it's a bit hotter than normal (~50 degrees Celsius), but at least not as bad as Tokyo! --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 20:41, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- @つがる: The weather has actually been worse than recently today (but still not that bad), it was quite rainy this morning but the rest of the day has been ok. However, for most of this June, the UK's had great weather (for once!..), it has been really nice and sunny. According to the BBC, we should get back over 20°C by Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully, I can go out for a long bike ride next weekend now mine's repaired and the weather's good too :) --Ferien (talk) 20:51, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- Tokyo has a lot of rain but it still seems warmer than the weather we have most of the time over here. You're very lucky with all that sun! --Ferien (talk) 21:00, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

- For me, I cannot ride bikes, I used to go to wally world and ride the little kids bikes with training wheels, and get kicked out of the bike section. In Tokyo, it's hot but it feels very stuffy, not like Vancouver, where it's just hot --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 21:03, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- Oh, and I prefer rainy, stormy, gloomy days, over the sun. Sorry if I seem weird! --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 21:08, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- @つがる: Oh, the reason I enjoy riding bikes is because I'm not really good at any other form of exercise or sport :P About enjoying rainy days: Meh, it depends how I feel. Sometimes rainy days can be fun; although even if you don't find them fun, you kind of have to get used to them over here because there are so many of them! --Ferien (talk) 21:28, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
- Yea I am not good at sports either! At school, we have PE class in the rain all year long! --Tsugaru Let's Talk! :) 🍁 21:58, 28 June 2021 (UTC)
