Thanks
changeThanks. First of all, I need to get more familiar with the system differneces in this wikipedia and english wikipedia. I am thinking to work more on India and Nepal related articles while I take rest for some days-weeks from heavy works on english wikipedia. Torreslfchero (talk) 10:15, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- Ok, thanks. I have fixed those problems. Do message me if you see any odd difference. Torreslfchero (talk) 12:03, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
- Glad to help.--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:05, 20 September 2012 (UTC)
Hi, I tried to create Category:Hindi language movies but I couldn't create that, not sure what I did wrong. Could you please do that for me? Torreslfchero (talk) 14:39, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
- Done. --Peterdownunder (talk) 07:43, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Hello!
changeYes I am from the English Wikipedia, though still a bit of a newcomer to Wikipedias and such. Thanks so much for the links! They will be very helpful. LovelyEdit (talk)

changeDear Peterdownunder,
Could you please advise me if I have cleaned up the text properly from the link bellow:
Mihailo Zivanovic#Work of Mihailo Zivanovic.
Kindest Regards, --Radivojl (talk) 19:03, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
- I have cleaned up the first subsection as an example for you to look at. A subsection should have three = on each side of the text. The text for the heading should not be in capital letters. With such large number of works, I would put them into a list. As you suggested by writing "...and so on...." I took this to mean that the list is not complete. It would then be better to write "...these works include...." rather than so on. The list probably should be in some kind of order, date or alphabetical, or grouped with lyricist. At the moment it appears to be random.
I hope this information helps, please feel free to ask any questions as I enjoy helping. I will have a look when you do some more work on the works section.--Peterdownunder (talk) 20:55, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

changeThanks for your welcome. I was just passing by to update an article and saw a (worrying) series of vandalism and attack pages being created. By the way, any chance you could grant me rollback here so next time I can be a bit quicker? (I am a sysop on it.wiki and reviewer and rollbacker on en.wiki). Cheers, --Mark91it's my world 12:27, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Augscend
changeI've been trying to add a page for a new idea.
First as Crescend (name conflict) then as Augscend (problem unknown).
In OpenOffice-Writer, its relatively easy to insert an image - inserting an image on a Wikipedia page is much harder.
Wikipedia is interested in new, reasonably explained ideas - isn't it?
Please tell me why my Augscend page was rejected - I put a few hours into preparing the content - including finding an unused word.
- Wikipedia is not the place for new, interesting ideas. It is an encyclopedia which are not the places for new original ideas. When you have written a book about your idea, and it has received coverage in the media and been accepted by other researchers in the field, then someone else will write the Wikipedia page for you.
With pictures, they must be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons before they can be added here.--Peterdownunder (talk) 22:28, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Bendigo workshops in January 2013
changeHi Peter,
It is a bit out of your way, but perhaps you are interested in assisting with a workshop that we're organising at Bendigo. See wmau:Proposal:Bendigo health information workshops 2013 (and talk page) for details. We've budgeted to cover the expenses of the trainers. Re: Marriage equality
changeHi Peterdownunder, from my experience at en-WP (which is quite a bit), the only words in the first sentence that can be bold are the title and a word that is another word used in place of it, or at the least, a word that means the same. Are you saying that it can go beyond that? I don't want get into a debate on the subject matter. I just wanted to make sure it was done according to acceptable style. --Musdan77 (talk) 00:31, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
- No, you are correct in your interpretation - bold is for the title and/or synonym only. My concern was to find exactly what the problem is and come up with a solution.--Peterdownunder (talk) 07:06, 7 January 2013 (UTC)
Problematic editor
changeUser:Musdan77 history is problmatic because he constantly uses primary sources and he also gives a Christcentric POV on various articles. I would like you to keep an eye on him please Thank you. PassaMethod (talk) 09:45, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Have you been monitoring this user's recent edits? It seems that the person wasn't satisfied with trying to push his anti-Christian agenda at the en-WP so he came here to do it. I had not had any problems at this Wiki until now. --Musdan77 (talk) 19:41, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
Articles

- An article that only says "Melbourne is a town. It is in Victoria" is so short and has such little information that it meets our rules for deletion. QD 1 rule says we can delete articles if it "Is very short and provides little or no meaning." --Peterdownunder (talk) 11:37, 9 January 2013 (UTC)
- Theoretically so, but articles of such a nature have survived RfD before, so I am not going to count QD A1 as valid. This will stay up at RfD. Chenzw Talk 11:45, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

External links vs. Other websites
changeFor what reasons are we using "Other websites" rather than "External links", and "Related pages" rather than "Other pages"? I've noticed a change between terminology over the time I've been editing on Simple.September 1988 (talk) 07:53, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- I think we have always used "other websites" as this is much more straightforward and simpler than "external links". I have always preferred "other pages" as it matches. But when I read the Manual of Style it says to use "other pages" but has the heading "related pages" itself. It has not worried me too much, someone with AWB and too much time will sort it out.--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:09, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- Found this discussion from 2010 where we agreed to use "other pages" but it may changed again more recently. Ahh, found it, and I supported it (so much for my comment above) I suppose I should update the MOS too.--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:24, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Dashes script
changeHi Peter, I'm so sorry for the late reply. I've been out of range since last Friday (travelling), and I'm in Darwin over the weekend for an exhibition. Stayed away from the disasters, and it's good to hear you're not too badly affected. I hope you had a good Australia Day Weekend too. I've had a look at that script, and it should be fine to just import it into your Special:MyPage/skin.js (I think you're using User:Peterdownunder/vector.js?). Just add the following on a new line:
importScriptURI('http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:GregU/dashes.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
I'll try it out on mine in a few minutes. The only supplementary script it uses is Wikipedia:AutoEd/core.js, which we have in identical form to theirs so it should work fine. Osiris (talk) 04:57, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Ambassador for School Project
changeGreetings- I'm looking for an ambassador interested in supporting a project I'm doing with students.
I am librarian at a school in Palo Alto, CA. I will be working with about 65 students to do some editing on Simple English Wikipedia. They are working on a project that involves researching female figures in the Middle Ages. They will research in library reference sources and then they will edit and cite the sources they reference in the Simple English Wikipedia article.
They will create their accounts in the day or two prior to the workshop, and they will be doing the actual editing from about 2:00-3:15 PST on Wednesday, February 27, 2013.
One potential issue is that due to the configuration of our school's wifi network, Wikipedia's servers will receive heavy traffic from our school's IP range. Please be alerted that this heavy traffic is not spam.
It would be excellent if an ambassador was able to "hover over" our work during the time of the project, so that if any issues arise we have someone to contact for support. If you are available during this window of time or know someone else who would be available, please let me know.
Thanks so much for supporting student projects! Castilibrary (talk) 17:29, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
- Hi just checking in with you as our project will be happening on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 between 2:00 - 3:15 PM PST. There will be a high amount of traffic from our IP range. Will this be okay? Thanks. Castilibrary (talk) 22:37, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Jinki
changeThe username "Ansei" is now semi-retired. I formally set it aside in a manner which is consistent with Wikipedia policies.
This username is derived from Jinki (神亀), which was a Japanese era name (年号, nengō, lit. "year name") during the years from 724 through 729. The era name change was part of a pacification or peace-making ritual. The nengō Jinki means "sacred tortoise".--Jinki (talk) 21:02, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

Wizardry
changeHi Peter. Hope you are doing fine...? So I've been working on the Wizard for the past couple of days, and we're slowly getting there I think. The notability guides are a bit difficult to translate. I was wondering if you could take a look at /Company notability and /Biographical notability, and see whether you can simplify them any further? I think those are the two I struggled with most.
We've done all of the pages the IP copied over, except for the last step which I'm not sure what we're doing with yet. And then there are four other steps left to bring over (I'm tracking progress here). I'll keep working on them over the next few days. I really do appreciate your help with this. changeWho are you? And who gives you the right to refute my ideas? Our illegal "president" has made it clear that he is abolishing the Constitution with Obamacare and gun control. He has forged his birth certificate to illegally take over the United States and install socialist, Marxist, communist, fascist martial law. It is common knowledge that Barack HUSSEIN Obama is detrimental to our nation, and my edits support that FACT.

Wikidata weekly summary #50
change- Development
- Rolled out new code on wikidata.org. The new stuff you probably care about is:
- Improved references. They can now have multiple lines. This should make references much more useful. You can now have one reference with for example values for each of the properties "book", "author", "page" to describe one source.
- Fixed the prev/next links in diff view (bugzilla:45821)
- d:Special:EntitiesWithoutLabel now lets you filter by language and entity type
- Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: added setting to enable/disable it per wiki and made it available for logged-in users only
- Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: improved layout / size
- Made it so that the “edit links” link on Wikipedia is also shown when the corresponding item only has a link to this one language and no other languages
- Submitted improved Apache config patch to make wikidata.org always redirect to www.wikidata.org, which is awaiting code review and deployment.
- Improved the script that is responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias
- Added a few ways to better debug the script responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias. This should help with investigating why some changes take way to long to show up on the Wikipedias.
- Started work on automatically adding edited items to the user’s watchlist (according to preferences)
- Finished script for rebuilding search keys, so we can finally get case insensitive matches in a lot of places
- Support for multi-line references in diff view
- Selenium tests for inclusion syntax
- Improved parser function (that will be used to access Wikidata data on the Wikipedias) to accept property ID or label
- Increased isolation of data model component to increase clarity and visibility of bad dependencies
- Worked on schema access in the SQLStore (of the query component)
- Rolled out new code on wikidata.org. The new stuff you probably care about is:

- When you edit a statement there is a little wheel in front of the text field. This lets you choose between “custom value”, “unknown value” and “no value”. “No value” means that we know that the given property has no value, e.g. Elizabeth I of England had no spouse. “Unknown value” means that the property has a value, but it is unknown which one -- e.g. Pope Linus most certainly had a year of birth, but it is unknown to us.

change- Development
- The first 11 Wikipedias can now include data from Wikidata in their articles (If you want to see it in action see the infobox at it:Torino)
- Worked on automatic summaries for statements
- Worked on making properties accessible from the client using their label so you can use {{#property:executive director}} instead of {{#property:p169}} for example
- Made qualifiers ready for the next deployment (Please test. See details further down.)
- Selenium tests for qualifiers
- Fixed some issues related to QUnit testing

- We’re currently carefully monitoring performance after the deployment of phase 2 on the first 11 Wikipedias. There seem to be a few small issues. As soon as they are resolved we'll deploy on English Wikipedia. All other Wikipedias are planned to follow very soon after that.
- Bye and a big thank you to Anja, Silke, Jens and John who are leaving the development team at the end of the month and will work on other cool things. You’ll be missed!
- Ever had any doubt about the possibilities of Wikidata? Talk to Wiri!
- We worked on reducing the time it takes for Wikidata edits to show up in the Wikipedias and made some progress. Daniel posted an analysis
- We started running a script on the database in order to make search on Wikidata case-insensitive. This should be finished in a few days and then search should be more useful.
- In addition to the above we have rolled out a new search box that suggests items. This should also make finding things on Wikidata a lot easier for you.
- We’re making some progress with Internet Explorer 8 support but there are a lot of issues with it (some outside our control). It’s unclear at the moment how much we can improve it still without spending an unjustified amount of time on it. You can follow the progress at bugzilla:44228
- Edits are now auto-confirmed for users with more than 50 edits and account age 4 days: bugzilla:46461
- Do you need old-style interwiki links for a sister project for example? This is for you
- The Wikimedia Foundation applied as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code again. We have proposed some Wikidata projects for students to take up if the Foundation is accepted again. At least 2 other organisations that applied also propose Wikidata ideas. More details on that once we know which organisations are accepted.
- Denny hacked together a tree of life based on data from Wikidata
- Wikidata was added to wikipulse
- A template to retrieve data from Wikidata if no local value is set
- Did you know?
- If you need to merge two items d:Help:Merge explains how
- Open Tasks for You
- See note at the end of this weekly summary
- Help test qualifiers (m:Wikidata/Notes/Data model primer#Qualifiers - see also example statements there) on the test wiki so we can roll it out with the next release
- Did you file a bug report for Wikidata or did someone else do it for you? Please take a minute to check if it is still valid. (Thanks for filing it btw!)
- Add some missing descriptions to those items with the same label?
- Hack on one of these
Could I have 2 mins of your time? As I’ll be working on some other projects for Wikimedia Germany as well from now on the time I can spend on Wikidata will be reduced. This means I’ll have to figure out what is useful to spend time on. If you’re reading this could you let me know for example on this discussion page? Also if you have ideas how to improve the weekly summaries please post them. --Lydia Pintscher (WMDE) (talk)
Talkback
changeHello. You have a new message at Osiris's talk page. Message added 06:10, 30 March 2013 (UTC).
Some advice required
changeHi Peter, I was one of the participants of the fabulous workshop in Benigo. It has however taken me a while to put this learning into action - but I am now starting in earnest! I am wanting to set up a page for our community participation research project as an access point for people to learn about the project and as a place for regular updates from the project team. I am planning to set up a dedicated user page for this project. Does that sound like an appropriate approach to you? cheers Kaye aka Cackleandhoot99 (talk) 01:49, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply Peter - i couldn't quite work out how to reply. I am getting a bit confused with who's page you should stay on to continue a conversation. I will have a good look at the resources linked to the workshop page (I am one of those auditory-kinesthetic learners... so no more!). I have had a play around on my user page to get a feel for how a page could be constructed for the project (it is called the Project Sandbox)and it has come together surprisingly easy! I am abit stuck with uploading our own photos - do I need to upload images onto Wiki commons first before I can upload them to a user page? Cackleandhoot99 (talk) 03:32, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
- Conversations can get messy when spread over talk pages, so I will reply here. If you see the message above your on this page you will notice that an editor has left a message to say there is a comment on his page. Second, notice the : at the start of this reply? This indents the paragraph to show it is part of the same thread. Your reply below would start with :: and so on. That helps reduce the mess. Photos will need to be uploaded to Wiki Commons first. There is a guide when you click on "upload" which you will find on the left side of the page. Then you simply add the file name of the photo in two square brackets like we did on your user page, and it loads onto the page.--Peterdownunder (talk) 07:45, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

Heisenberg ... Quantum Physics ... and such
changeGosh, Patrick is good, isn't he?
Question for you: You gave him the E=mc² Barnstar a while back. Now that article (Quantum mechanics) has been tagged with a {{complex}} tag. I don't agree; I wonder if you do. More to the point: Should this be a GA? StevenJ81 (talk) 20:44, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
- Quick check says it's ok - Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease: 73.9 and about Grade 7, so well within target range. But as it is more complex than that I will check it carefully. As to GA...hmm, I will have a good close look. And he is good, isn't he?--Peterdownunder (talk) 10:05, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- I can not see any reason why it should not be a GA. But, I am not sure I understand it - the ideas are so complex. I would need to be reassured by someonr that does understand it that the info is correct.--Peterdownunder (talk) 10:23, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- Is there a specific target range? That's useful to know. ... I am going to clear the {{complex}} tag. I will check over the next couple of days and make sure I think everything is right (or at least as right as I am capable of determining). StevenJ81 (talk) 14:01, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- Target range: at this time there is no agreed measure to define what is or what is not Simple English. I like to use Flesch Kincaid scores, and I look for scores higher than 70% for Reading ease, and Grade Level of no more than 8. A FOG score of 8 or lower would be good too. Other editors here will accuse me of bean counting. Their argument is that you can write nonsense with simple words and get a good score. So you need to make sure that the article also makes sense. Another problem is that in some articles, complex jargon or place names will make the article seem more complex than it is. I think Patrick shows how you can simplify an article and keep some of the jargon. A serious problem is that some of the readability programs will give quite different scores for the same article. I think the solution here is not to get too excited about the numbers, for example 67% maybe quite OK. I use it as a general guide. Less than 70% it probably needs work. Many articles on Enwiki score at 20—30% which clearly indicates that the language is not simple. The other thing I do is I tend to only use one source, www.read-able.com, when I am simplifying, so I can compare my attempts against the same measure. If you are using Firefox, you can download a Simple English dictionary which then highlights all complex words so you can quickly see where improvements can be made.Peterdownunder (talk) 22:00, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
- Cool. I use Firefox; I'll look for that dictionary. StevenJ81 (talk) 00:54, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

- OK. I've done all that. Everything is right. However, there still is a little simplification that it could stand after all, and perhaps a couple of unnecessary topical detours in the article. So I'll maybe tackle that to get this up to GA status, then jump in on Heisenberg. StevenJ81 (talk) 18:02, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

- Implemented string formatter
- Discussions/Press
- Events
- upcoming: GLAM-Wiki 2013
- Other Noteworthy Stuff
- Deployment of phase 2 on English Wikipedia is currently planned for April 8. The remaining Wikipedias are scheduled for April 10. As usual this might change if we run into problems along the way.
- There is now a page showing the current lag for changes propagating to the Wikipedias so they can show up in watchlists and recent changes for example. This should ideally be in the range of a few minutes. Right now it is higher because of some abnormally high bot activity but decreasing. Should be down to a few minutes soon.
- There’s now a badge you can add to Wikipedia articles to indicate there is data about it on Wikidata
- We hit Q10000000
- A Wikidata item in the wild ;-)
- Did you know?
- There are a number of task forces that take care of specific jobs or topics on Wikidata
- You can get database dumps to play with
- There are a lot of stats about Wikidata on http://stats.wikimedia.org

Based on feedback for last week’s call for comments we will continue this newsletter. However more community help will be needed. From now on they’ll be drafted at d:Wikidata:Status updates/Next and your help is very welcome.
Thank note
changeOsiris has given you a virtual meat pie (with free sauce, also virtual) in return for knocking off some of the articles on his to-do list! |
Specifically these two. Which I've probably had on my list since some time in April (...no, not this April). I should really stop writing about these little mountains that the rest of Australia has never heard of, but I've only got about five or so left that I want to do. I hope you had a good Easter break...? Osiris (talk) 03:24, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks for the pie. When I was a young lad, the pies used to have poems written on the bags, and who could resist giving a dramatic reading...those were the days. I think we should have good cover of Central Australia, and it is sad that people do not know more about it. And I always like writing articles that have not (but should have) made it onto Enwiki. I get cross with myself sometimes when I find I am distracted and not working on Australian stuff. So much to do. Anyhow, I shall get back to editing, think of the view of Mount Conner in the distance over the sandhills. --Peterdownunder (talk) 11:57, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

- Got some external professional review of our code and architecture and started working on their feedback
- Worked on reducing the dispatch lag (the time it takes for changes on Wikidata to be sent to the Wikipedias for display in watchlist, recent changes and to purge affected pages)
- Worked on using Redis for job queue to improve the lag situation even further
- Created new Wikibase Query extension for phase 3 functionality

- Deployment of phase 2 on the remaining Wikipedias was delayed because of a high lag of changes being propagated to the Wikipedias. The lag has been reduced considerably now and is going down even more. The new date for deployment will not be next week because there are other large changes on Wikimedia infrastructure scheduled that we do not want to interfere with. It will hopefully happen very soon after that though.
- Next code update on wikidata.org is planned for Wednesday. This should include qualifiers and bugfixes.
- There will probably be a short outage/read-only for wikidata.org on Tuesday (database is being switched to MariaDB)
- If you're a student and interested in coding on Wikidata consider applying for Google Summer of Code.
- There is a new user right: property creators
- There is now a page to request deletion of a property
- We now have Bureaucrats
- Reasonator was improved and extended (1 2)
- Open Tasks for You

American River Monument
changeHi Peter...
I'm not tech savey so hope you get this simple note. I'm a Yank living in OZ and when I saw the monument at American River I wondered if those recognized there were the first Americans in Australia. Started a 'research' project and have discovered that 'first American' was a horse. If curious: rgcope@gmail.com. I'm likely, in publishing the story, to use your photo -- credit of course. Now I need a pic of a horse in a paddock. Rob Cope in Melbourne

changeHi, Peter. Would you mind looking at my draft for the article Shabbat at my sandbox? I think I've managed to make this Simple English, and the tools you have suggested for that have been most helpful. But I'd still appreciate another eye before I publish. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk)
