All those QDs change

Sorry to do that to you. I see your comments say "mass deletion". Are you deleting all his stuff, or just what was tagged? I didn't tag everything. Almost everything, but not everything. --Auntof6 (talk) 00:03, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

No problem, I started doing them one at a time and then I remembered your new tool which made deletion requests pink, so it was easy to find them on the mass deletion list. I did notice a couple of templates you did not tag, was that intentional?--Peterdownunder (talk) 00:06, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, so you saw my note to Osiris? Helpful tool, that. I copied it from enwiki. As for the templates, I just hadn't looked at them yet. I guess they could be deleted if they're not used (now that all those articles are gone). --Auntof6 (talk) 00:22, 24 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

New administrative sanctions on Oregonian2012 change

Hi Peter, I have imposed new administrative sanctions on Oregonian2012. I know that you have been working very hard to get a mentorship working, and I apologise if I am seen as interfering, but the suppressed edit (which I managed to see before it was gone) does not reflect well on him and his receptiveness. Please see Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Interaction_ban_between_Oregonian2012_and_MySweetMelissa for more details. Chenzw  Talk  03:59, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for that, it is not interfering, it is working together. It was probably the outcome that I wanted to avoid, however let's hope that it stops here and everyone can get back to creating useful content. --Peterdownunder (talk) 04:12, 13 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Peterdownunder. You have new messages at MySweetMelissa's talk page.

Spell checkers change

Peter, did you create these? StevenJ81 (talk) 12:56, 24 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

No, they were created by User:Lwyx.--Peterdownunder (talk) 21:29, 24 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Just sent a thank-you. StevenJ81 (talk) 00:01, 25 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Turns out, by the way, that if you rename those files from "en-x-simple.dic" and "en-x-simple.aff" to "en-simple.*", you can get the dictionary to show up in your spell checker as "English (simple)". StevenJ81 (talk) 03:01, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
That works, but I am not going ask how you discovered it.--Peterdownunder (talk) 07:41, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Not really, if any. But it is possible to set one up in your user space. I would not expect you will be overwhelmed with people joining up, there just are not enough editors.--Peterdownunder (talk) 00:43, 8 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Templates change

I had to delete a few of the earlier imports (with the duplications), but the rest are okay. Let me know if you're still noticing some errors, but I think it should all be fine. :) Osiris (talk) 05:01, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't know whether it just got swept in by accident, but that AYA navbox has piqued my interest. It looks like a good idea for a new project, and there are a few articles on there I wouldn't mind doing. Osiris (talk) 05:24, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
It was the reason I ticked import templates, because I thought there was a selection of people that deserved articles. Lets do it! And thanks again for sorting out my mess.--Peterdownunder (talk) 06:04, 23 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Help change

Hello Peter,

My students have created a (small) number of simple wikipedia entries. Some I'm proud of, and some will receive very poor grades. Is there a way I can attract some editorial attention to these, before final grading?Mringaterutgers (talk) 21:50, 27 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Peter. Sorry to interrupt, I'm hoping to catch you while you're in. If you have time, would you take a look at the message I've posted here. I've never posted something like that before, and it's probably a sensitive issue. Do you think the message is okay? Is the wording okay? Until now, I've just been following after the edits and making corrections but the workload has become too high with four or five such editors making regular edits. Osiris (talk) 06:47, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

I would suggest the wording is too complex for someone struggling with English, but I think you have expressed your concerns admirably. We need editors with these problems to have an account where we can set up sandboxes and mentoring to try to ease the burden. I suppose if they are not prepared to do that, then there is only a limited amount of time and effort that we should be prepared to offer. By the way, you could never interrupt, though this time I was up at Old Bar (near Taree) taking in the beaches and ozone.--Peterdownunder (talk) 01:47, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I feel like you're always on holiday, is that just me? ;) Argh, I forgot about the vocab -- too focused on saying it politely. Not that it matters, it doesn't look like they read it anyway... Osiris (talk) 05:54, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Gwib's timebox change

Hi, Peter. I discovered the timebox of Gwib (talk · contribs) here on your user page. I took it and played with it a bit, so that now this timebox can use either time zones or time offsets, and can display in 12h or 24h. I now have a copy in my sandbox.

I gather that Gwib is not around any more (or at most is here extremely sporadically). So here are the related questions:

  1. Is it appropriate for me to update the code of the timebox in his userspace? (Not sure)
  2. If not, is it appropriate for me to put a hatnote at his template pointing to mine? (Probably)
  3. Is there a relatively easy way for me to communicate with everyone using that template now to inform them of mine? (Have no idea)

Note: if in my userspace, I will move template from current location to User:StevenJ81/timebox2 and remove sandbox headers before advertising. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 16:01, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) If I may offer another option, how about moving your version to templatespace? That way, future maintenance wouldn't have this issue. Just please be sure to categorize it properly. --Auntof6 (talk) 18:14, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, it's a userbox, so I didn't assume I was allowed to do that. Am I?
Questions 2 and 3 would still pertain.
Thanks, Aunt. StevenJ81 (talk) 19:52, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we have other userbox templates in templatespace. See Category:Userbox templates for examples. As for the other questions, I would not edit the other user's page. To communicate to the people using the template, you could either look at what links there and leave a note on each user's talk page, or leave a primary note at Simple Talk, and a smaller note on the user talk pages pointing them to Simple Talk. I would be sure to let Gwin know what you're doing, even though s/he might not be here much any more. HTH. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:11, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
It does. Thanks. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:36, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Seems like it is all solved while went dolphin watching :) --Peterdownunder (talk) 01:42, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sounds nice. (;-)
Anyway,   Done. See {{User timebox2}}. StevenJ81 (talk) 03:39, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
In the future though, yes you can change/edit them in someone elses userspace, as userboxes here are most usually put in userspace instead of template space. As Auntof6 mentions though, we haven't enforced it like we have for wikiprojects. That being said I wouldn't change them to a point where they no longer reflect the original intent. -DJSasso (talk) 11:48, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
...or change them in a way that makes them not work or work differently. Speaking for at least myself, if I have a template in my userspace that I don't mind others using, that doesn't mean I'm OK with anyone else changing it without checking with me. Also, it's not true that userboxes are "usually" in userspace. I just looked. Of the 576 templates under Category:Userbox templates and its subcategories, 517 are in template space. There are probably userbox templates in userspace that aren't categorized, but I doubt it's enough to add up to more than the number in template space. --Auntof6 (talk) 12:11, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
I haven't done a count so I will have to rely on yours, but userboxes that weren't official ones (like babel userboxes which make up most of those 576) were are one point instructed to be put in userspace. This is why Gwib's is in his user space. We even at one point set up a special user called UBX I think so people could put it in it's userspace instead of their own if they wanted to. I should also note that Wikipedia:Userboxes also instructs you that you should only put them in User space though it is awkwardly worded (edit: I have since reverted to an earlier version that is more clear). And I am not saying don't check with the person. But if you are fixing a template or altering it and keeping it backwards compatible then it shouldn't be a problem even if you don't ask. Like everything else on the wiki anyone can edit anything in your user space. It can be reverted if another user doesn't agree. -DJSasso (talk) 12:48, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────┘
In this case it doesn't happen to be strictly backward compatible, although it certainly is approximately. Just as well then that I didn't try to overwrite Gwib's.

  • I'm pretty sure that the rule on userboxes in templatespace came over from enwiki, where if they didn't enforce it things would be a mess. Doesn't mean we have to do it that way here.
  • This is a pretty interesting and worthwhile discussion for everyone. Should we copy/move it over to WP:Simple talk? StevenJ81 (talk) 14:26, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
  • Looking back at some old discussions it looks like it emerged from that fact that we used to only allow babel userboxes here. We didn't allow anything other than that. And like Wikiprojects we moved to allow them in userspace as a compromise to having them fully. Can certainly move it to simple talk I don't object. :) I only commented cause I wanted to point out you could edit userspace userboxes in the future as I am sure most people won't get too hostile but it is a courtesy to atleast let them know you did it in case they don't have it watch listed. They can revert as they see fit. As my one of my college professors used to say its easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission. Gwib I am sure wouldn't care since he has been gone years, but since it wasn't backwards compatible you would have to go fix it on everyone's page so a new one is a good option to save you some work.-DJSasso (talk) 14:38, 2 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Transwikiing articles change

Hi Peter, how do you do that? ✉→Arctic Kangaroo←✎ 06:04, 8 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Magic button available to admins. If you need a page moved over, ask an admin to import it for you. Just make sure it gets simplified right away, or it is in danger of being QD'd as a transwikied article without simplification etc. I always use the inuse template to show that I am working on the page, and add a credit to the talk page, even though the import show up in the page history. Hope that answers the question.--Peterdownunder (talk) 06:11, 8 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Cyberbully templates change

Hey! Regarding your post on Simple talk, {{Uw-cyberbully}} should appear under single-issue warnings. I can also add {{Cyberbully block}} to the block list if you want? Are there any others? Osiris (talk) 00:25, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi - thanks for the welcome template. :-) I'm actually quite familiar with Wikipedia, but this is the first time I've tried Simple. Actually, if you don't mind, I have one now. The Twinkle links on diff pages aren't working for me, only the ones in the dropdown menu. Is this still important? I tried the fix mentioned, at User:Sunrise/common.js (cleared my cache, and turned it off in the preferences) but there wasn't any change. Please let me know if there's someone else I should ask instead. :-) Sunrise (talk) 11:58, 13 August 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I think I see. (Sorry for the talk page spam!) When I tried to leave a vandalism warning with Twinkle, I got a message saying that my account was too new. If you have time, is there anywhere I can request autoconfirmed status? WP:Requests for permissions doesn't list anything like it does on English Wikipedia. (Of course, don't worry about it if it's any trouble, since I can always wait the extra few days.) Sunrise (talk) 01:02, 15 August 2013 (UTC)Reply

Commodore Nutt change

Hi! The article above is currently at VGA. It requires at least 6 votes to move forward. I'm not asking you to vote "yes", but simply to vote. This article recently passed to GA, and I'm hoping it will pass to VGA. My "head" is still in the subject which, if the article need improvements to get it to VGA, will make it much easier to focus on these improvements. The requirements for VGA tell us that: "Within one week of being listed under the voting section, 80% of named editors must agree that the article is indeed very good. There is a required minimum of 6 named voters." The article has been on the page for three days, it has one "yes" vote, and time is running out. Would you, could you, vote? Please? Leader of the Opposition change

Hi Peter. I know that you're on holidays at the moment, but I'm posting this for when you get back. I thought it might be a good idea to merge Leader of the Opposition (Australia) and List of Australian Leaders of the Opposition. The list page doesn't have much of an introduction, and since lists should describe their subjects anyway the description on the first article would serve as a good introduction. It'd also help keep all the improvements in one place so that there is no duplication. Thoughts? Osiris (talk) 05:54, 16 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

Big Weekend change

Hello Peter! It's been a while - I haven't had too much time these last few months. I've been studying in Italy. I was wondering, would you be interested in co-organizing a Big Weekend? I believe it has been a long time since we last had one, but I think they help people edit the mainspace more than they usually would. I haven't thought of a topic yet. Maybe you have some ideas? Changing the subject, I'll be coming to your beautiful country for a couple of weeks, over Christmas and the New-Year (partly to watch The Ashes). I'm sure it'll be as wonderful as you make it sound in your articles! :) Yottie =talk= 15:44, 12 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

G'day Yottie, firstly, a Big Weekend would be good, although the last one did not gain much support. But that doesn't matter, every new article and edit helps. The main thing with a topic is having one that is broad enough to attract support from editors with a range of interests. You should enjoy the Great South Land, let me know if you need advice on where to go and what to see.--Peterdownunder (talk) 19:54, 12 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to jump in here, but I was thinking about trying to put something together where we tried to get as many articles that have featured and/or good status on En. created over here. I think it'd be a great idea to have all of those here in some form, even if it's paragraph-length stubs, so that perhaps it'll attract readers here when the article is on the front page. Thoughts? Only (talk) 21:40, 12 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think that also sounds like a good idea. Are you suggesting we run it in a similar way, i.e. counting the number of edits/new articles created or improved? Yottie =talk= 23:20, 12 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, Peterdownunder mentioned the idea of having a "broad topic" to gain wider interest...I think this would be a good idea for a "big weekend" (or longer...) type project as you have a lot of categories from which articles can come. Just thought I'd put it out there as a possibility! I don't know if this would be too broad of a topic...I can't remember all the past "big weekend" topics, but I seem to recall railroads and lakes being topics. Only (talk) 23:24, 12 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
We could do it over a month, maybe? That would make it easier to have a broad topic. As long as we had a list of articles we can work on, it would be fine I think. Yottie =talk= 00:03, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sounds like we have the start of a plan - the "Featured February" or the "Mad Month".--Peterdownunder (talk) 03:17, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like the sound of "Featured February"! Only, do you want to come up with a slightly more detailed proposal? :) Yottie =talk= 15:39, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I can do that. If I find some time this weekend, I will...otherwise, I might just wait until Christmas break. Aside from Wikipedia:Big Weekend, is there any other place where we had information about big weekend-type events in the past? I think it was mostly just advertising at Simple Talk, right? Only (talk) 20:41, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
That is right.--Peterdownunder (talk) 20:56, 13 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

(outdent) And, obviously, don't let the idea of "Featured February" take away the idea of having a "Big Weekend" as well in the next month and a half before February! It might actually be a good idea to have a Big Weekend or two to get people thinking about these kinds of endeavors. Only (talk) 11:38, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

Good idea. The next two or three weekends are a bit hard for me, but after then I'm definitely around to help. Maybe something Winter related for December? And another weekend in January, with another topic to be decided. Yottie =talk= 11:52, 14 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

I need to convince them to import more features.--Peterdownunder (talk) 06:24, 15 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, without that one the template namespace will be pretty useless. But at least you've got their categories going. Osiris (talk) 06:29, 15 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

Request change

Something peculiar is happening on Talk:Struggle for existence. The posts are too similar in content and timing for it to be an accident. Either a class activity is going on, or these are someone's socks. Since you're a checkuser, I wonder whether you could see what is going on. As for the article, it seems to me to be perfectly satisfactory, so I do not plan to change it much. Regards, Mac. Macdonald-ross (talk) 12:08, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think the evidence points to a class project, with the editor asking for and getting feedback on what they have written. While there is no current problem, I don't think a CU is necessary. It would probably only tell me that they are using computers at the same university. It is worth keeping a check on it however, in case we are wrong.--Peterdownunder (talk) 22:00, 11 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

BLW change

Hi, I know this seems obvious but I just want to make sure. Is this edit for the BLW (as you dindn't put the code I can't be sure)? --Reception123/Receptie123 (talk) 07:06, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

It was :) --Peterdownunder (talk) 07:09, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification. I will add it to to my list --Reception123/Receptie123 (talk) 07:21, 26 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

A big "cheers" from Old North Wales! change

Many thanks for joining in the party at The 20-20 Vision of Wales Challenge! I've added your info here and there: please be brave and edit as you wish! At least Wales will now be understood by people, who in the past have turned to books and found: "For Wales, see England"! Diolch Peter! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 13:01, 26 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Good morning Peter! Please check that I have included all your edits on this page - I have a feeling that I have left something out! Many thanks. Edit, and be happy! Llywelyn2000 (talk) 05:37, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
G'day, I think everything is Ok, I have added some more, but I am never sure about the "points" so you might need to check. I am enjoying learning things about Wales (I had a Welsh prep teacher back in the 50's who came to school in "traditional dress" which made a big impression).--Peterdownunder (talk) 12:18, 29 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Pages related to recent closed RfDs change

Two of the RfDs you recently closed (this one and this one) had related pages included in their RfDs, but weren't deleted. Are you going to take care of them, or would you like me to? --Auntof6 (talk) 00:17, 16 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing that out, I had missed them. All done now.--Peterdownunder (talk) 07:47, 16 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Krebs change

Thanks for your suggestion about how to edit the entry for Hans Krebs. In fact, I was getting confused between simple.wikipedia.org and en.wikipedia.org. I thought there was a duplication of pages and I was suggesting a merge of two pages. Then I realised that one was on simple and the other on en and I backed-out all my edits. Chris.selwyn (talk) 16:38, 6 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

We have all got confused between the wikipedias at some stage :)--Peterdownunder (talk) 02:22, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Can somebody semi-protect my user page and talk change

Somebody, a vandal, redirected my user page to Penis in violation of my space. I feel insulted. Can you semi-protect, please? Angela Maureen (talk) 01:09, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Done. Don't worry, though. The vandalism doesn't say anything about you, only about the vandal. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:34, 9 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks from a very happy Welshman! change
