I've been on my Basic Officer Training Course for the British Army, (better known here as the "Tarts & Vicars" course) ;). I will be a "combat" regimental medical officer (RMO) in Afghanistan in Sep 2010. I finally decided I had to "pick up a rifle", "stand a post" and support our heroic troops directly. It was nice to spend the last month as "Major Fr33kman" :). I know that James and NVS know what I mean. fr33kman 03:38, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Other projects change

I saw that you blocked Tyciol, and I agree with that. He is also blocked at Wikiversity. I was bothered that Sue Gardner did not take a hard enough stance on the matter to ensure that there were not people stating that such individuals should be allowed to edit based on inappropriate claims that such people "do nothing wrong". This was to set in stone many of Wikiversity's own practices, and it would be interesting to have Simple put forth some more blatant statements, since Simple is a place with many minors. Ottava Rima (talk) 17:08, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

As I told Tyciol, the reason I have blocked him here and at the Simple English Wiktionary is because he is blocked by ArbCom at enwiki. We have a policy that an admin is allowed to block any user who is blocked on another WMF site, without warning. It is true that we also have a one-strike-rule, but it is discretionary, and not automatic. I have decided not to use it in this case. I do not know what happened in that particular ArbCom case. I have read all the various comments across WMF-land, and what I've read is worrying, but I have no comments or judgements to make regarding those comments or this particular case.
On another note, all together, I do agree that anyone who self-identifies themself as a pedophile should be globally blocked. The Simple English Wikipedia does indeed have minors who are editors and readers and so we do take such matters very seriously. I think the correct place for any such policy, however, would be at meta, probably with input from WMF counsel and the board. fr33kman 20:42, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Why did you block Bluegoblin7? I Haven't been on for some time, and I'm a bit confused. SimonKSK 21:21, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Because he blocked a user whom he was involved in a dispute with and then wheel-warred. It's all very sad really. fr33kman 21:24, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hmmmmm, but did you really have to block him? :/ SimonKSK 21:27, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, he made comments on IRC about going rogue. I don't think he meant it, but I was elected to not take the chance. Like I said, it's all very sad. I hope he sticks around, but he's been too impulsive and unrestrained in his anger in the past to ignore POV blocks, wheel warring and comments about doing the project harm (which I don't believe he would, but he's said it before also). fr33kman 21:30, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Strange, that doesn't seem like Bluegoblin. Yeah, it's very sad. I, too, hope he sticks around. SimonKSK 21:34, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
It does seem like him to make threats, but I agree it doesn't seem like him to follow through. I don't think he would have, but I owe a duty of care firstly to the wiki. It'll probably come out more in his formal RFDA since my action was only temporary. He is still technically a sysop, just with out the buttons. fr33kman 21:41, 18 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your vote on Wikipedia:Requests for deadminship/Bluegoblin7 change

Hi Fr33kman, I have removed your vote on the above page per the rationale that "emotions may soar", especially when such little time has passed between the incident and the creation of the RfdA.[1] This is nothing against you and you are free to participate again in a few hours, when the 48 hours has passed and the protection has been lifted. If you have any queries, please feel free to ask me. Thanks, Chenzw  Talk  15:47, 19 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

User:Bluegoblin7 and Administratorship change

Sorry for butting in again; I know it has been a stressful day for the entire community at large on Simple talk and elsewhere and that my actions have been bordering on WP:POINT, but I would still request some kind of cleanup for the mess. For one, I was considering having more admins on the simpleWiki after seeing the distressing conclusion that over 5000 users outnumbered the 41 (now 40) admins that we currently had (if you could help with this issue, it be greatly appreciated). When it suddenly occurred to me that Bluegoblin7 (sorry, Bluegoblin, but I had to use your name) was still on the list and that you remarked he was "temporarily" desysopped (I thought DeAdminships were permanent, especially this case?). I would like to request that you make the appropriate changes, i.e. to his userpage and the category page, to notify everybody, as I have been rather deeply involved already. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 06:40, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can I still comment on the DeAdminship? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 07:00, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
He is still an administrator at the moment, why change things now? Jon@talk:~$ 07:26, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Telecom, BG7 will be permanently (unless if he passes another RFA) desysopped if the formal request for his deadminship is closed as such. Currently he is only temporarily desysopped as a measure to stop wheelwarring. I hope this answers your question. Kindly, —Clementina talk 07:30, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I figured that since he's indef blocked, he can't even edit, let alone have admin powers. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 07:45, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes. But de-adminships that are done by a crat without an RfDA first are always temporary- the community confirms then whether the bit should be given back. (See WP:Emergency deflagging) He is only officially no longer an admin once the community confirms that he should not be an administrator, not before. I think you can still comment on the RfDA, as you would be able to if it were an RfA. sonia♫♪ 07:49, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, all. I'm still a little confused about this point: do we need more admins? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 07:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Not really, people have often argued that we have too many admins. :) Of the 5000 users, only a few are really active, and problems are usually solved pretty quickly here. Of course, that's just an opinion, but it seems to be general. Kindly, —Clementina talk 09:20, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
The active users on the link you point to is extremely inaccurate. It takes into account anyone who has made an edit in like the last year or something. (not sure the exact formula) Which includes all the people who have only ever made one edit etc. In truth we only have about 30-35 at most regular users meaning we have more admins than we do regular users. -DJSasso (talk) 11:38, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Actually now that I look you are linking to just how many User pages there are. Which is even more inacurate because it has people who haven't edited in multiple years. -DJSasso (talk) 11:41, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Actually, there are 9236 users on that page if you looked on the page (as of now), so I figured that 4000 of them must already be retired. If what you say is true, that we have that many retired users, then do we have a list of users who have edited within the past month? I would consider that at least a little more accurate. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 18:01, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Special:Statistics. 716 people have edited atleast once this month with a named account. But for people who edit regularely. We are probably closer to 30-35 in most peoples opinions. Regularely being multiple edits say 50-100+ a month. -DJSasso (talk) 18:22, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll take a look at the special page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TeleComNasSprVen (talkcontribs)

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
I have an idea. How about we delete some of the userpages per en:WP:DENY and this nomination on the enWiki page? Besides, some editors might want to have the names of those userpages when they decide to create a new userpage. P.S. Where do you go to report inappropriate usernames? :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 05:28, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think that you report inappropriate usernames at WP:AN. πr2 (talk • changes) 22:58, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
'Tis logical, seeing as how UAA redirects there. You can also feel free to drop by my talkpage, or any talkpage of an active admin that you trust. I'm around as much as I can be, even if I'm not actively editing. -- Lauryn Ashby (talk) 23:20, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

He appears to be confused (well not totally). The ip who left the message vandalized EnWiki and is complaining about a user who reverted him. James (T C) 22:46, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Autoblock change

The IP autoblocks are often out of sync with the User blocks. This often leads to a practical effect of adding a "backdoor" extra few hours or more to a block. For example, my user block ended at 2:34 PM this afternoon, but since you had sent the autoblock for 5:30, I had to bug Griff at 3:00 to un-autoblock my IP so I could make the edits I was entitled to make since my block had expired. In order to keep this "blockdoor block" from happening, mops need to be better about synching the exact time of user blocks and IP autoblocks Purplebackpack89 04:28, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

An autoblock is just that, automatic, and not something that we can control. If I block you and enable autoblock, the window for the software to automatically block subsequent IPs that you attempt to edit from/log in with using my name is 24-hours, resulting in an autoblock being "out of sync" with the block placed on your account. -- Lauryn Ashby (talk) 04:34, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Then why did it show up two days after my block? And why was it enabled in the first place? Autoblock is primarily for long-term blocks and IP addresses that have been used (see en:Wikipedia:Autoblock). Mine was a short-term block, and the IP address in question has yet to be used. Autoblock is overused, IMO, and leads to "backdoor blocks" and/or more headaches for people willing to lift them. Purplebackpack89 04:42, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Your autoblocks and times they were placed are not something that I can go back and look over; since you're no longer blocked, they don't show up on the block list anymore, but I can assure you that it was done the same way as every other autoblock. In regards to autoblock being overused, I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you. Going back to the example that I gave earlier, if I block you for a week and disable autoblock, then nothing prevents you from using another account in violation of your block, using a proxy that we haven't caught yet and creating a new account, or using your road account. Though if you used your road account while your main account is blocked, it would be quickly caught and dealt with. ;) In short, don't do things that can lead to blocks and it won't be something you have to worry about. You should also know that dealing with this type of thing is what administrators are for, so don't worry about any "headaches" it may cause. Sorry for the long response, and I hope this makes sense. If not, let me know and I'll attempt to clarify what isn't clear. -- Lauryn Ashby (talk) 04:53, 23 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Fr33kman, the translation "Hola! Estoy Fr33kman y yo soy un operador del sistema global. Esto significa que tengo derechos de administrador aquí." sounds... weird. I don't. I am just trying to make a generic userpage for my global sysop work. I will be adding babel boxes for what I do speak. Global sysops must have a userpage on each project they act on and I don't just want an interwiki redirect. fr33kman 19:47, 24 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
