Autocrat?

Hi Ryan. I was wondering about that on. Shouldn't it be transwiki'd to wikt: and then deleted here? It looked like a dictionary def to me. Jus' wondering :-) fr33kman t - c 01:38, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Nope. It doesn't look like a dictionary definition to me! I've redirected Autocratic to Autocracy. If you ever do spot an article that looks like it should be deleted here and moved to the Wiktionary, then add {{dicdef}} to the article, then someone should do whatever actions needed from there (though, it takes a while for some since Category:Move to Wiktionary is a pretty big category still). Yours, RyanCross (talk) 01:48, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Cool, will do. Let me know if I can be of any assistance in the transwiki backlog, or is it 100% admin'y fr33kman t - c 02:01, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Please be advised

I know you're a new admin, but this IP address range has a long history of vandalism, and it's pretty narrow. So just block the range for 3 months and get it over with, instead of blocking all those individual IP's. Please see: WP:AN#210.8.54.0/24. — Jonas Rand · (talk) 02:05, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Whitey Wistert article

Hi, I've made some changes to the article. Do you want to review them? Thanks fr33kman t - c 22:14, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Seems okay to me. I fixed one, maybe two minor mistakes you made, but it looks fine now. A lot of Wiktionary linking I see. Thank you for your help. – RyanCross (talk) 23:52, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
I hate to see anything fail when it can be improved (not that it's going to fail mind). Yeah, I like wikt: links. My view is that we're a service, it's the reader of the encyclopaedia that's important, without them what's the point? :-) fr33kman t - c 00:15, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply
Simple English Wikipedia articles tend to use wikt: links often so our readers can click on the word to see what they mean since some words are too complex to minors/people learning English. Good idea to do actually. Anyway, could you help fix the issues that The Rambling Man brought up with me? That would be greatly appreciated. :-) – RyanCross (talk) 00:24, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

<-- So, after about 4 hours of work, how'd I do? I think it's good now and I supported. Good night! -- American Eagle (talk) 04:05, 25 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Apology accepted. Ric (since I don't know what name I should call you, so I'll go by your real name...), I'm not going to block you. I want to see you improve. I think for now, just editing articles and participating in less discussion is good for you. It doesn't matter what kinds of articles you edit, just edit articles. If you don't know what to do, then I suggest doing the easy task of adding {{stub}} to short articles. Remember, the tag should be placed exactly above the categories. Do this for now so you can concentrate on articles. Or do whatever you want, just edit articles for now. Thanks! :) – RyanCross (talk) 01:18, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

My DYK Suggestion...

Hey Ryan,

Could you possibly give me some feedback on User:Bluegoblin7/DYK - the Template pages are the most worked on so far.

Also, with the border etc used on Template:Did you know, could you possibly help me? I want to make the border a lot smaller, have a gap between the two boxes, and make it stretch to all availble space. Or, alternatively, just the one box with several hooks displayed at once, with a picture also displaying for the lead.

Thanks,

BG7even 11:33, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

For T:DYK (Template:Did you know), I suggest just removing the box and going with what en.wikipedia does–just using the hooks without a template to hold them. I don't see why there is supposed to be a box and I don't think it is needed. – RyanCross (talk) 17:50, 18 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ok, well I had the box because I thought it would distance from en-wp's. We can change this though! I also had it for the randomisation and i'm not sure how I can do this without the box (i borrowed it from somewhere else!)
Thanks,

Uh, why would we do that? User:RyanCross/Wikipedia:Did you know explains all the rules, criteria, participants, etc. about DYK (well, at least it will). User:Bluegoblin7/DYK/Template:Did you know is for the update itself. What do you mean by merging those two pages? – RyanCross (talk) 20:29, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Excellent point ;). I'd say we have a hard and fast DYK proposal. Let's give it a week, and then Project Space it! Oh, and please don't fully protect any of it at any time ;) cos then i can't edit it... yet! BG7even 20:34, 19 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK

You've made WP:DYK incredibly complex, and lost 3 hooks which were on the nominations page. Everything has been moved around, is less clear and (on my Firefox), the {{DYKBox}} no longer works.

It wasn't broken before, why fix it? --Gwib -(talk)- 05:05, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

What's complex about WP:DYK? Also, the "B" on box is not supposed to be capitalized, so it works when it is: {{DYKbox}}. – RyanCross (talk) 05:07, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
And no, I didn't lose 3 hooks. I deleted them here because the hooks were updated onto the Main Page. – RyanCross (talk) 05:08, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Firstly, you have a few broken redirects (like this one), also, I thought you had to move the hooks into the archives then put them on 'Next update'. The hooks go from here to here to here to here without clear instructions on how to move them to any step.
You told me you didn't want a carbon copy on ENWP's version, but you've just made BG7's page even more like theirs. --Gwib -(talk)- 05:13, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Alright, I recently did this a few minutes before you came online and told me this, so I had no time to add the instructions yet and, yes, I was planning to do so after I made sure I added my own nomination correctly. I've also fixed the broken redirects. Also, no, hooks should be archived after the following update is done. So whatever was on T:DYK before it was updated, that is what is archived at WP:DYK/A. As for the next update, something that probably made you think I'm copying from en.wikipedia, I added T:DYK/N as it is something that is actually needed. The next update page is supposed to be a look over page for experienced users to review what is going to be added to T:DYK next. If that page wasn't there, people would be adding hooks from T:TDYK willy-nilly. They'll probably forget to separate related hooks from each other (which includes biographies, nationality, topics, etc.), make sure to check for problems with consistency, formatting the "... that", formatting the appropriate location to where (pictured) is supposed to be, making sure the main article is in bold, that the parenthesis in (pictured) is italicized (a very common mistake), and many more issues. The next update is a place to check for these issues. It is rather hard to check for these issues on the nominations page because you don't know which hooks will be next to each other when they reach T:DYK, since hooks will be taken there directly. With T:DYK/N, we could use it as a preview page. Copying en.wikipedia's version (I found out to be) was a benefit to us, actually. We want the best we can make DYK here, right? Well, I found out the best and more helpful was en.wikipedia's version. I didn't copy exactly their version of pages, but I based it on it. Big difference, Gwib. – RyanCross (talk) 05:29, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
[1]. Start from scratch and base our entire DYK on ENWP's version are also quote different. The only bits that aren't copies from ENWP are the Rules section (which I wrote), and the archives (which I created). --Gwib -(talk)- 05:32, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
There's really nothing wrong with having pages based on en.wikipedia's version. Most of our articles are based on en.wikipedia. Why can't project namespace articles be based on them also? I don't consider the pages "copied", just based. WP:DYK isn't that similar to en.wikipedia's version. On T:DYK/N, I have removed parts that are not needed for Simple English Wikipedia. Much less complicated then en.wikipedia. Just a few tweaks would be enough at this point. – RyanCross (talk) 05:41, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Article is completely different from namespace... You won't find a single policy/guideline that is the same as ENWP (i.e. same language etc). However, some IP address has just nommed, so it appears that it isn't so complex as not to allow new editors to give a nomination. --Gwib -(talk)- 17:02, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

hi, that was intentional. On the manual of style it says to put "Other websites" as the main header and "References or notes" under that in a smaller header, but "Other websites" are references or notes and it is more correct if books mentioned under references are not part of "Other websites" so "References" or "see also" should get the large heading and websites only be a small part of that. Is this sense for you? ~ R.T.G 06:52, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Most of our articles has the "Other websites", "References", and "See also" sections as lv2 headers. Some examples are some of our WP:VGAs such as baseball uniform and Ana Ivanovic. I'm just doing what is done to other articles. I don't see how this is different from the rest. – RyanCross (talk) 07:27, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
The MoS section on other websites is a little confusing in its wording. It uses the same name for two different concepts. The section of the MoS labeled "Other websites" is meant to deal with any linking to non-wiki sites, not necessarily the "Other websites" section of article pages. In the MoS section, it breaks it down into three groups, the list at the end of the article (the actual "Other websites" sections, links to other sites as part of the prose of the article, and references/notes. Each section deals with other websites, but only the first one is the actual "== Other websites == section as it is normally used. The section header on the MoS really does need to be changed so it is not so ambiguous. -- Creol(talk) 08:11, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Template talk:Did you know/Next update

Hi - I raised an issue at Template talk:Did you know/Next update. I am not sure where the 50% US suggestion came from. Regards --Matilda (talk) 20:57, 26 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

...for reverting that bot's warning on my talk page. Not sure what it thought I was doing, but meh. Juliancolton (talk) 00:19, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Bad things, Julian, very bad things. 0.0 PeterSymonds (talk) 00:20, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I've contacted Chris G (the bot operator) what was going on, so he'll have a look at it later. Working on hurricane articles as always, huh, Julian. ;) Keep up the good work. :) Come contribute often! – RyanCross (talk) 00:21, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Heh. En.wp is running out of hurricane articles to write, so I figured I'd come here! :-) Juliancolton (talk) 00:34, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

hahaha

hahaha, it is up to you to work extra hard to make that the case ~ R.T.G 00:45, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

This is a really inappropriate comment by RTG who seems unaware that we discussed it on the talk page before I made that change--Matilda (talk) 00:58, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

mr.admin

since you admin, you block this user? I think it is vandal only. Giventends (talk) 00:43, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

help in getting started

Hi Ryan, I'm really green with this and somewhat phobic about computers (probably showing my age: I'm a retired librarian) This is exciting stuff. I saw your name at the top & it took me a while to get to this stage. I'd like to add some material to areas that are skimpy but am hesitant to start. Do I need to use any kind of code? Do I need to create links? That would do me in. Anything you suggest would be appreciated. Maybe I could try an entry and ask you to check it. Cheers, Mike; oops couldn't find this symbol Poko6648 (talk) 21:05, 29 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

72.35.97.85

Just want to touch base about 72.35.97.85 (talk • contribs • CA • deleted contribs • nuke contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log). I have seen youve given him a L4 warning. However, It should only really be at L3. He hasnt edited again since Cake, which I have him a L3 for. But I did miscount one at the start. Do you want that last one to stand, or do you want to strike it. I would strike it, as he's only just got L3, and then got L4 for the same edit. --  Da Punk '95  talk  05:05, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vandalized five times today. Would actually deserve a block, but he didn't get the warning in time. But since he didn't get it in time, I left a lv4. – RyanCross (talk) 05:07, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh. Well I'll VIP him for strike 5 then. Only thought he was at Strike 4. --  Da Punk '95  talk  05:09, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
And a free bonus : Hello. In case you didn't know, when you post messages on talkpages and Wikipedia pages , you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ("~~~~") at the end of your message. You may also click on the signature button which is above the edit window. This will put a signature containing your user name or IP address and the time you posted the message. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --  Da Punk '95  talk  05:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hah! Thanks. :P – RyanCross (talk) 05:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thats OK! But Rollback is fair usful! --  Da Punk '95  talk  05:17, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK

You are very welcome - I am delighted to be involved. It is interesting being part of its evolution. There are obviously wrinkles to be ironed out - please let me know if I am ironing too vigorously! (eg do hooks have to be interesting to people who wouldn't otherwise be interested?) Regards --Matilda (talk) 06:52, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

....dyk that

I deleted that page with AGF in mind? Anyway... whats going on with DYK and all of these pages? Synergy 20:12, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Well, we're discussing this now... so we'd just have to wait. Everything should still be normal until we discuss if there should be any changes to DYK. – RyanCross (talk) 20:14, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
We're on irc right now. I told him I won't be deleting anything until this is resolved. If you guys need some help making it work, I'm here. Synergy 20:16, 31 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Clothes list

Ryan, the outcome on that was 3 keeps and 3 deletes with suggestions to merge the list with the category. I checked it before and some stuff like Bullet proof vest(note i can't remember which ones) was not listed in the category. Could you undelete for that or is that done? ~ R.T.G 00:47, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would say to userfy and make it into a little project to merge. Perhaps RTG would like it in his userspace? Malinaccier (talk) 00:50, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I will categorise whatever ones are missing from [[Category:Clothing]] but you will have to undelete it for a while ~ R.T.G 00:55, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I see 6 deletes (counting the nom, as that actually is a delete request) and 2 keeps. One of the deletes was a "kill it" delete without using the {{delete}} template by User:Microchip08. I'd rather move the deleted content it to your userspace if that is okay with you. – RyanCross (talk) 01:27, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah do that but leave me a note on my talk so I know. It's probably only one or two articles but best not to orphan them. I'll get you to delete it then. ~ R.T.G 06:33, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry about the late response. Make sure I get a note if you move to my userspace ~ R.T.G 06:35, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hi, that's pretty much done if you want to delete the page again. [2] ~ R.T.G 15:05, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Done. Thanks for your work. – RyanCross (talk) 02:10, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Todays beginners tip of the day a SysOp should not need!

Please read the whole article, especially 'Woolworths was the first Australian supermarket to offer petrol discounts when a certain amount of money was spent in the shop' before declining the DYK. And I know Woolies started the 4c offer before Coles, as they started in the late 90's, and Coles did in about 2003. --  Da Punk '95  talk  20:58, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Still declined either way until you can cite it. – RyanCross (talk) 21:02, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
this OK? --  Da Punk '95  talk  21:08, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
And while your at it, protect User talk:67.189.185.73. Im in a rvt war. --  Da Punk '95  talk  21:14, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
You sorta reverted me, not StaticFalcon. – RyanCross (talk) 21:15, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
And I sorta reverted that! --  Da Punk '95  talk  21:16, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! I'll look at the hook now. – RyanCross (talk) 21:17, 1 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
