DYK

Ryan, I'm somewhat concerned by the addition of Woolworths (Australia) to T:DYK/N. See my comments here (before it was removed as the hook had been added, by the nominator, to /N). Could you please take a look at this. Thanks. Giggy (talk) 22:50, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm.. apparently someone added the nomination to T:DYK/N before they saw the further comments. Thanks Giggy for the note. I'll add it back to discuss it further. – RyanCross (talk) 22:55, 2 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Could you re-review my nomination cause Matilda says no but all requirements are there, I'm starting to get the feeling that Matilda has something against me.--   ChristianMan16  03:03, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK (2)

Ryan,

I find your comment at User_talk:Matilda#DYK very offensive. Number One: You do not run DYK. It is a collaborative project. Number Two: Many people help with DYK, including myself. Number Three: Stop making it EN-WPish, and stop taking credit for the whole project. You came in late, imho ruined it, and then took all the credit for what was my idea, with input from others.

BG7even 10:51, 3 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think you misunderstood. I sorta new you would comment on that if you didn't understand it, so I'll say what I mean. We all "run" DYK, it's just that I was thanking Matilda for her work "running" it individually because she was particularly working at DYK around that time I was around. Bluegoblin, of course I'm thankful for your work too and that we even have DYK here. I could have thanked everyone (and I guess I do now!), but I just felt Matilda was working very hard on reviewing and commenting on DYKs (I think you've noticed that also). And yes, I know you think I'm making DYK worse, but that's your opinion. My (and most of the community's opinion) was to make it the way it is now. I forgot who said it (I think it was Giggy), but making a few things like en.wikipedia doesn't make us into en.wikipedia. That will never happen. A few things I think will be helpful if we look at en.wikipedia. By the way, it was actually User:The Flying Spaghetti Monster who brought up DYK here first, and then got most of the community supporting. But I thank you for getting DYK into action! :)
Having said that, I just hope we can get along with DYK how it is now. I've known you for while Bluegoblin. The first time I met you was when I redesigned your en.wikipedia user page for you on a Tuesday a few months back. I hope we can get along now. And I thank you for bringing up what I said on Matilda's talk page. Can we move on and get along now with whatever the community has decided on how we should now do the DYK process? – RyanCross (talk) 01:55, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Meh. Still, if you say it to one, say it to all. As I said, I personally don't have any issues with how it is, I just think that it is too complex for a simple wiki. Still, if the community thinks its fine then that's fine. Let's move on! :D BG7even 09:06, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK (3)

Can you rush a hook onto the DYK live page? Theres only 4 - i f**ked up big time!!! --  Da Punk '95  talk  03:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Heh. I reverted it for now. There were no other fully approved hooks, so I'll leave it be for a little while. I might be able to get one more on there, but I've got to run for a few minutes. Next time, use the preview bottom. ;) You wouldn't want to mess up an edit on the Main Page ever again... but nice try! – RyanCross (talk) 03:36, 4 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

is / will be

It is the most exciting news though! I have both of his books and although of course not eligible to have a say was hoping for this outcome! Have to make a DYK out of it somehow :-) --Matilda (talk) 04:36, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

RfDs

Just a quick question: How long should Requests for deletion last (not including pages deleted under the quick deletion policy)? Two days seems a little short. -- Creol(talk) 06:28, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

They're set to end exactly 7 days after being nominated (unless snowed), no? --Gwib -(talk)- 06:30, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Creol: Yes, it does seem rather short, but seeing as it was at 4 delete !votes (5 counting the nominator as I count that as a !vote) I decided it would have been a pile-on WP:SNOW. Gwib: Yes, it is set to run for 7 days unless snowed. – RyanCross (talk) 06:52, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Please can you revert your close of the vandalism archives RFD. 2 days was way too short, and there was no consensus. Thanks. Majorly talk 21:01, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ryan, please don't close RfDs so early. The end date is written on the RfD. There was no reason to close it four days early, especially if you didn't say why on the RfD. Giggy (talk) 03:52, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
That clearly looks like a WP:SNOW to me. – RyanCross (talk) 03:53, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
You should've really stated, Delete, per the snowball act, or words to that effect. But after the last early close, perhaps you should leave closing RFD's till a bit later? I know on enwp you did have a habit of NAC'ing articles early... ס Talk 03:55, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ryan, I hate to say this but SNOW is only used when it is highly unlikely that another individual is going to object. Just take it easy for now, theres no harm in waiting the extra few days. It'll still be there if you want to delete it. Synergy 03:57, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Alright, thanks for the advice guys. :) I'll leave it longer next time. – RyanCross (talk) 04:02, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK project member review sought

Hi, following some discussion which has now died down I have proposed some rules for DYK which refine those we already had and are based on our recent experiences and the discussion. As a member of the DYK project, could you please have a look at Wikipedia talk:Did you know#Proposed rules and give your comments. Thanks Matilda (talk) 23:40, 10 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: Rollback for Iceflow

Hi RyanCross! Thank you so much for contacting me about Rollback. I would very much like to have this enabled for my work at Simple Wikipedia. I have been handling Rollback on English Wikipedia for about 18 months, and found it to be extremely useful. As a user here for only 2 days, I would consider it an honour to have Rollback enabled, and I thank you for trusting me to use it! Regards, Iceflow (talk) 02:47, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for activating my Rollback! I look forward to adding a few more vandals to my present tally between here and English Wikipedia! :) Iceflow (talk) 03:15, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thai Houses deletion

The students wanted to do "Thai Style Houses", but I thought it might be best to keep it simple because it is Simple English wikipedia so I told them to call it "Thai Houses". I think they want to talk about what houses look like in Thailand. Do you still think that this is not notable, and if so, can you give us some feedback on a better topic / topic name?

-Hunter 61.7.236.54 (talk) 07:05, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hmm... how about the students and you work on the Thailand article? Just make sure the information is referenced and that you cite your sources. – RyanCross (talk) 07:27, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi - I am in the embarrassing position of multiple offers of nomination for RfA - please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Matilda and my user talk page at User talk:Matilda#Ready?. I have elected to wait for the conventional 3 months and this gives a week for you to add your conom to the page Synergy has prepared if you still wish. --Matilda (talk) 00:52, 19 November 2008 (UTC) (embarrassed but flattered)Reply

Undelete

I personally think you should undelete User:Solutionsresource seeing that it was userspace and G11 only applies to mainspace.--   ChristianMan16  04:28, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, ChristianMan16 you aren't correct: G 11 applies to General rules – All pages - userspace does not appear to be excluded. Ryan did explain on the User's talk page why the deletion occurred. --Matilda (talk) 05:09, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I didn't see that on the talk page....my apologizes. And I'm sorry again I misread the policy.--   ChristianMan16  05:11, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the late reply. I was busy somewhere else. Anyway, I have to agree with Matilda. G 11 applies to all namespaces, hence, the "G" standing for "General". And apology accepted, ChristianMan. — RyanCross (talk) 05:19, 14 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hey there Bluegoblin. I'm not entirely sure what I'll be doing yet, but I'll think of something soon. But if you have any suggestions or if you want me to work on an existing article for Simple News, just drop be a line. — RyanCross (talk) 18:44, 16 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hey Ryan,
That's fine! There's nothing specific that needs doing, just what you want really. A cleanup of the project pages might be nice, standardising them all, and also a collapsible delivery box and a box to put the main features in would be nice, on a blank page, linked from the delivery page.
Thanks,

(<--)CM, that IP is invaluable to the project. Blocking is a net negative, and he hasn't really done anything to deserve it. PeterSymonds (talk) 00:31, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Something's gotta be done...he's been told twice by me and Eptalon to redirect instead of replicate pages.--  CM16  00:33, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've done more thinking about this and his edits earlier did not merit a block (Chenz's block I undid) but if he is recreating content after warnings than its an appropriate block no matter how valuable he is. My recommendations: After 4 warnings (or three since hes done this before, after a warning) indef block him. Allow him to edit talk page and e-mail. When he is ready to talk, we will listen. We know he understands English (obviously because he edits and fixes in English) so I doubt it will be long before he talks. Synergy 01:00, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Just a minor note before someone asks; indef is only for no fixed duration (until we figure out what to do) and not forever. Synergy 01:03, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page Re: Adult Star Derrick Pierce

Hi, I'm the person who started the Derrick Pierce page at Simple Wiki, and have somewhat followed the discussions about it. In the meantime, I moved it to the regular English Wiki page where it is fully footnoted, etc. If it's a problem to have it on the "simple" Wiki page, I understand. I started it there only because the regular page was rather complex but I figured it out finally. I'm still working on it when I have time. I don't intend on working further on the simple page because it's not really the best place for it as far as search engines or people looking for info on Pierce. Anyway, indeed, Derrick Pierce is a notable personality in the adult world as has been accurately pointed out, with multiple AVN awards. Thanks again, just wanted to touch base. My sig

I received an email form Shapiros10 (talk · contribs) asking me to shorten my current sig saying it was nearly 350 characters and he offered the one in his sandbox (which I personally don't like cause it's too plain). We'll it's dressed up for Christmas, one of the two major Christian holidays with the other being Easter, I don't think the community would mind it until the 26th at the very earliest and the 2nd of January at the latest. Could you point me in a direction with this?--  CM16Merry Christmas!!  07:47, 12 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Could you please answer this?--  CM16Merry Christmas!!  05:35, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, sorry. I logged in earlier to see if I had new messages, but I didn't have time to respond to them since I had to run. I logged in again after I got back, but forgot about this message you left me. It's hard keeping track of messages at several different wikis at a time. :-)
Anyway, while I understand you want to keep the Christmas spirit up, you still have to follow Wikipedia's policy. And I believe 350 characters is too much, so you do have to shorten it. Just because a special holiday is coming up doesn't mean you can avoid Wikipedia policies. The alternative one Shapiros10 created in his sandbox seems okay—you can use it. If you don't want to, maybe make a signature of your own with shorter characters that you like to use to keep the spirit up? – RyanCross (talk) 05:56, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I might be able to figure out something, but still, it seems anti-Christmas to me cause I've shortened my sig as much as I can while still having something I like, guess I'll have to find something. Can I at least use this one while I work on it tomorrow?--  CM16Merry Christmas!!  07:20, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I know it's not true, but yet, I feel cheated out of my God-given right to celebrate Christmas (with my sig) cause it was too long , I couldn't find a way to shorten it. :'( I still feel like an exception coulda been made until at least the 26th.--  CM16   08:04, 13 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hydrogen

Ryan, you added Hydrogen as a hook on the next update on DYK. I have a question about that. Should it be used on the DYK if it has a {{complex}} attached to it? I'd think that'd be something we wouldn't want on the main page. We don't want people coming to Simple, seeing that page highlighted and saying "Man, this is really hard stuff." I've commented out on the next update for now, Either way (talk) 12:45, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

No, complex articles should not be on the Main Page. Good call. I didn't look at the article when I was moving it to the next update since I assumed the reviewer looked at it properly. Wikipedia:Did_you_know#More_details_on_Rules says, "The article linked should be easy to read," so until it is simplified, it can't be updated to the Main Page. I'll re-add the nomination back to T:TDYK leaving a note that it is complex. Eventually, someone will simplify it. If it is there for too long, it would have to be removed. Sounds good? RyanCross @ 13:11, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Works for me. Either way (talk) 13:21, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vandal warnings

Do you really think giving a vandal a "softly, softly" warning for denying the Holocaust is really enough?!? I'm well aware of WP:BITE, but sometimes it's clear some have no intention of improving the project. Soup Dish (talk) 13:51, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Still, they do deserve a warning. I wouldn't want to go blocking right away just for that edit. If it was a much bigger edit or many different vandalism edits, than I would probably give an final/only warning, and then block. It really depends on the situation. Some actually do start contributing positively after they have received a warning after contributing negatively. In this case, it was just one edit. Anyway, the user stopped making edits, so nothing to worry about for now. I'll keep an eye-out. Still concerned? RyanCross @ 13:57, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Reply to your ER review of me

Hi there. I wanted to reply to what you said on my Editor Review outside of that page because I am not sure exactly how long what I am posting right now is going to be. For right now, I am not currently worrying about becoming an administrator. I merely asked what I should do to become an administrator basically as curiousity to find out what people want in an administrator now-a-days. I do understand that I should focus more on adding more content to pages, however, that is not my specialty. I just simply don't have the patience to do so. Only once every couple of weeks do I get a day like the day that I expanded Romania from 3 kilobytes up to 32 kilobytes and I am able to simplfy everything that I add to the site in the process. Therefore, since I don't have the patience for that normally, I gravitate towards what I do have patience for, which is creating short stubs. While I know that people have been telling me to writing more long articles, I have found that I have a knack for creating stubs, which believe it or not, is just as important as expanding already short articles, because otherwise, how will the pages get created on this site? My plan on this site is to play to my strengths, not my weaknesses. While I do want to become an administrator, I have been trying very hard to not think about it. Sometimes, I still do think about becoming an administrator, but these moments are very short. Hope you understand what I wrote :). Cheers, Razorflame 04:30, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Understood. That's all you had to say. I just wanted to make sure you weren't making adminship a game. I'm happy you're focused on the mainspace and creating stubs. Yes, I'd rather see hundreds of articles created rather than one article making it to VGA, or in this case, 3000+ (could be a little more bigger though, but still)! By the way, I've never seen anyone type as fast as you. That took only one or two minutes really. RyanCross @ 04:34, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
In case you are interested, I have between a 100 and 120 word per minute typing rate (depending upon how tired and interested I am). That is in the upper echelon of typists. The reason why I am able to type so fast is because I have been using computers since I was 4 years old :). Cheers, Razorflame 04:38, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Were you four when the typewriter was invented? ;-) RyanCross @ 04:41, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
I never used a typerwriter. In fact, I think that they are kind of clunky. I started out typing on a computer keyboard. Also, I don't think that an RfA is a game. I think that it is a serious process. Cheers, Razorflame 04:45, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Request

Hi there. I suck at making my own cool and snazzy looking pages, and I think that it is time to change my userpage and user talk pages' design, as well as my signature. If you are willing, I would be very grateful if you could redesign my user page, user talk page, and my signature :). Thank you in advance if you are. Cheers, Razorflame 04:40, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hm, sure, I'd be happy to. But I would need some specifics to what design you would like me to do. The only user page I redesigned here on simple.wikipedia is User:Gwib's user page.. would you like something like that, or do you just want me to come up something off the top of my head? :-) RyanCross @ 04:45, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
Surprise me :). Come up with something unique and inspiring from my username :). I will take whatever you do for me, so go nuts :). Cheers, Razorflame 04:50, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Heh. Ryan, the userpage design was taken from User:American Eagle, and the top-thingy from User:EVula. LOL And so continues the userpage mania... ;) -- American Eagle (talk) 01:18, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

congratulations!

wow, I didn't know that were an admin here! :D Congratulations on being given the mop. I'm sure that will do good work with it. --Enric Naval (talk) 20:19, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you. :-) You're a few months late though. I haven't really heard from you in a while, Enric. RyanCross @ 20:22, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

General help?

Hi there. What would be another good word for campaign? Also, could we keep this section open for a while in case I have any other questions? Cheers, Razorflame 05:21, 1 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

What do you mean? — RyanCross (talk) 08:11, 1 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Never mind ;). Cheers, Razorflame 04:05, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hook for Australian Rules Football

Do you think that the hook, ...that Australian Rules Football is the national sport of Australia would be a good enough hook for DYK? Cheers, Razorflame 04:05, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Eh, not really interesting enough in my opinion. It's like saying "Oranges is a fruit found in Florida" or something. And there are several complex words in the article from a quick skim of it. — RyanCross (talk) 04:10, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I was thinking that the hook wasn't all that interesting. Thanks for the confirmation :). Cheers, Razorflame 04:11, 9 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

MathCool10's RfA Closure

Nice work ;)

Your change could actually have remained, it's better than mine!

I find it amusing that we both went for it at the same time!

BG7even 08:55, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Heh, thanks. I was starting to close it by removing the RfA from the RfA page first, but you already added the closure before I did. We did it at the same time, we just did it differently. ;) If you insist. — RyanCross (talk) 08:59, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Lol ;) I noticed. I was about to remove it before I archived it, but as you say you did that part first :P Cheers, BG7even 09:01, 13 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

January 19th Simple News

Well, we did recently hit our half-a-millionth article. We could also add new RfAs that passed/failed. That's all I have right now. Also, why are you using a template for that? I see no use for it, honestly. A simple typed out message would do. — RyanCross (talk) 05:21, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
50K is only 1/20th of a million, not 1/2. Also, seriously.. if I were to fail an RfA, I would certainly not want to get a reminder of that in the news. --Creol(talk) 06:47, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Whoops, I thought I saw an extra zero in there for a second. I have to agree with Creol, but I think mentioning the successful RfAs would be fine. — RyanCross (talk) 08:17, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
We already do that anyway ;) I'm more thinking about articles and stuff, roundup of recent disccussions. But thanks anway :D. BG7even 11:14, 14 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Nothing major has really come up since the last issue. Or maybe I just haven't been updated on what's been going on here. Sorry, I don't know what to do since nothing big really happened. — RyanCross (talk) 01:15, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ok. Perhaps you could mention the addition of the WP: short namespace and/or Flood Flag, whoch have both had bugs filed? Or perhaps you could mention the discussion about Bot Created articles? I don't know, it's up to you ;) Thanks, BG7even 09:19, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I don't think I'll be able to write for Simple News anymore. I'm busier in real life now, so I don't have that much time. — RyanCross (talk) 03:01, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thank you

Thank you for your support in my RfA which passed 24/0/0. I will do my best to better Wikipedia with the administrative tools that the community has seen fit to grant me. Question about GFDL

Do the edit summaries that I have been giving for when I create asteroid stubs cover the GFDL? Cheers, Razorflame 03:02, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I believe so as you are including a link to the en.wikipedia article you based the article off-of that you are creating in the edit summary. — RyanCross (talk) 03:09, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Good. That was what I thought :).  :). Cheers, Razorflame 03:14, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

RfA Thankspam

RyanCross/Archives/5, thanks for your comments in my recent RfA which closed as 12/11 or "no consensus". I hope to work on the things that were raised and prove to the community that I am worthy of the mop, this includes showing my RL stability, that I don't have Ownership issues with DYK and also showing that I know what consensus is. Special thanks go to Kennedy for nominating me! Thanks for your comments! GoblinBot3 (talk)

My RfA

Thank you for participating in my recent request for adminship, which passed with a total of 21/5. I will try to the best of my abilities to maintain the trust of the community, and I will carefully consider the opposes to learn how to further improve. Cheers, Juliancolton (talk) 14:06, 28 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nomination

Hi there RyanCross. I have nominated you for Checkuser here on the Simple English Wikipedia. You can find it Wikipedia:Requests for checkusership/RyanCross. You can either accept or decline the nomination as you see fit. Cheers, Razorflame 17:41, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

In order to become a CU, a user must be 18 and have given there true identity to the Wikimedia Foundation (m:CU). I don't think Ryan has done this. TheAE talk 18:00, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
RyanCross isn't 18 years old 0_o? Cheers, Razorflame Public (talk) 18:07, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Maybe, I meant I haven't seen him give away his identity to the WMF (but he may have). TheAE talk 18:15, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I doubt that he has done this as he doesn't have any tools that would require him to do so at this point in time. Cheers, Razorflame 18:16, 29 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the nomination, but I've honestly never wanted to be a checkuser. That requires too much from me, and I just can't do all that work. Plus, I haven't identified myself (and I don't plan to). Sorry. — RyanCross (talk) 04:22, 30 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I would like to request that you decline the nomination then and delete the page :). Cheers, Razorflame 01:52, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Done, thanks. — RyanCross (talk) 01:56, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks!

Thanks for the help! Cheers, Razorflame 01:48, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

... so... what did I do again? — RyanCross (talk) 01:49, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, yeah, that. No problem. ;-) — RyanCross (talk) 01:53, 5 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
