My apologies
changeI'd like to apologize if it seems that I was making a point with the RFD earlier. I would never intentionally disrupt the project, especially as an administrator. I just feel editors shouldn't be so focused on who can create the most articles. Again, I apologize if it looked like I was making a point. Exert 23:28, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
- If I can interject here, I thought it was more bold than pointy, although perhaps Simple Talk would have been the more ideal forum. Kansan (talk) 23:44, 12 October 2010 (UTC)
Quite harsh statement

Alternative to Facebook?
changeWhat do you mean when you say that this site has become an "alternative to Facebook"? I don't use this site for social networking and I don't know of anybody else who does. Considering that this is a basis you have mentioned for mulling having the site closed, I do want to know what you meant.
I have been working on a number of articles. I generally have not nominated them to be GAs or VGAs. I figure that my time is far better spent writing articles (and fighting vandalism) than navigating the GA/VGA process. Kansan (talk) 00:10, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
A side note: I tried to get en:iron through the GA process and it stagnated too, even though so many people were working on it. This definitely quenched my interest in trying to promote new articles. I prefer to create large quantities of medium-quality articles rather than spend all of my time on making tellurium trioxide a VGA. --Chemicalinterest (talk) 11:57, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
Hello, dear TRM! A hundred thanks for your thorough review, and a thousand for your help on Gettysburg Address! :) I just wanted to make sure what you meant by ref 35 being a bare url. Okay, now I'm going to sound like an idiot, but...here goes! Silly as it may sound, I've always thought that it meant a bare link to the website without specifying the date, publishing website, &c in a {{citeweb}}. Could you please be so kind as to clarify its meaning for me, so I can remember it for future reference as well as being able to more correctly fix it? —Clementina talk 09:23, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

COI re-open?
changeIt wasn't a COI; I was merely undoing BG's archiving of the thing before it had been formally and definitively closed (not to mention the fact that BG was told by repeated editors to stay away from this) Purplebackpack89 18:09, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

PAD
changeFirst off, there's no written requirement that ST has to be notified of PADs...Chem just did that with Nickel Creek. Also, I gave Barras a whole week BEFORE I sent it to PAD (a week I was not obliged to give her), and she didn't make a single edit. Anyway, have a nice day! Purplebackpack89 03:32, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- Just a note - Barras is a he. —Clementina talk 06:02, 16 November 2010 (UTC)
- I didn't say anywhere there was a written requirement to notify the community but it makes sense, right? To get as many people on to helping with this as possible? I would have thought that was common sense... Anyway, have a nice day! The Rambling Man (talk) 07:18, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

changeAbout Paul Keres. I already answered on page User_talk:Macdonald-ross. So again: There is no any reason to put russian transcription to article about Estonians and in Estonian there don't use paternal names at all. And occupation don't change nationality of any person. Noah Cyrus/Seven
changeI explained about "seven years underage", even though the discussion was already dead. My basic argument is BLP should be followed strictly in the case of new articles on minors Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 22:54, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- No, BLP is BLP, "minor" or not. The Rambling Man (talk) 06:13, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- If BLP is BLP, than BLP PRODding is acceptable. I don't quite understand why you don't feel that it's absolutely imperative for articles on children to be properly referenced. Nor do I understand why you keep putting "minor" and "underage" in quotes Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 06:28, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- All articles should be properly referenced. My point was finding a ref for this article would have been much quicker than nominating it for deletion. "minor" in your jurisdication may be different from "minor" in my jurisdiction. "underage" was your quotation because, on its own, it makes no sense at all. Underage for what? Drinking? Driving? Smoking? Voting? The Rambling Man (talk) 13:54, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Forgive my outburst earlier
changeI just get frustrated sometimes. I know you have the interest of Wikipedia (and really, really, mind-blowing good articles) at heart, but sometimes your tone comes off as "I know you've worked hard and made hundreds of edits to the article, but it's still not good enough". You probably don't mean it; that's just how I feel about the GA process sometimes Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 06:17, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- No, that is what I mean. It doesn't undermine the hard work you've put in, I know that you've bust a gut to get this article up to GA, but there are still things that need to be sorted. Most reviewers here are happy to just drive by and call "support". I'm not one of those. I want to read every sentence of every article to make sure it's good. I'm not changing this approach for anyone or anything. Like it or lump it. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:54, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
- I wouldn't call other editor's supports drive-by...if it meets the criteria as written, it doesn't have to exceed them. You need to understand that your forcefulness has come close to driving me off this wikipedia, and I think it might have had that effect on other editors. Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 01:02, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
- Popping in to say "support" when there are clear problems classes as "drive by" to me. Sorry if a thorough review puts you off. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:14, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

changeSince you just QDed it, could you close the RFD I started Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 21:54, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
- I QDed it before you RFDed it so there's no reason why you can't close it yourself. Really, it's worth checking these things before wasting time at RFD. It was a clear copy-and-paste from en.wiki. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:58, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
- I had hoped with the extra time it could have been salvaged; also, I was under the impression you shouldn't close RFDs you've started Purplebackpack89≈≈≈≈ 22:05, 1 May 2011 (UTC)
- That would have been ideal but too much. You could easily close an RFD if another admin has QD'd the article, there's no problem there... The Rambling Man (talk) 22:10, 1 May 2011 (UTC)

Opinion needed
changeHi TRM, once again I would like to ask your opinion. I am preparing an article on the explorer John McDouall Stuart for GA and then hopefully VGA. The question is, does it need citations in the intro paragraphs. Macdonald-ross says it does, but I remember (I think) a comment from you that it was either all or nothing (provided that the info is cited in the article). Could you have a look and comment. If you see any major shortcomings in the article that need to be addressed before it goes to PGA then that would be appreciated to. Thanks, --Peterdownunder (talk) 11:37, 16 July 2011 (UTC)
- Hello, quick reply. No, nothing in a lead needs to be referenced. A correct lead is a summary of the whole article and should never contain information that is not referenced in the main body. I can see very few exceptions to this, other than for perhaps direct quotations in the lead. I'll take a look at the Stuart article in due course. If not, I'll review it at PGA. Knowing your work, it certainly won't have any major shortcomings! The Rambling Man (talk) 19:18, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Probation
changeHi TRM, how are you? I hate to drag all this up again, but I was looking for your opinion. I'm still technically under 'probation' for another 3 months, having served half of my 'sentence' (lack of a better word...) however I was hoping that this could all be cleared up and we could move on early seeing as there has been no problems with my editing, as I knew there wouldn't be. I'm asking you first as you were the editor who organised the proposal and the admin who unblocked. Basically do you think the community would be in a position to remove me from this shameful probation early? 'Letting me off early for good behaviour' sort of thing...? Your thoughts would be most welcome as always. Kind regards, Normandy (talk) 13:02, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- Just putting in my two cents. I would be ok with that. Normandy has gained a good amount of trust back, I feel. However, I will leave it up to TRM to decide. :) --Gordonrox24 | Talk 15:16, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, I don't have an issue with re-opening a discussion with the community to get a consensus for "early release on good behaviour", not a problem. I'll knock something up at WP:ST and we'll see how it goes. The Rambling Man (talk) 15:50, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

IRC
changeI fully understand your dislike with the use of IRC. I used to hold firm opinions on this matter myself. Having used it for ages now, I can honestly say that it's a benign entity, mostly boring. It is most certainly not officially representative of the WMF, but it does have a de facto status of being quasi-official. People use it to ask stewards for action; they use it to keep in touch with each other and share opinions about loads of things, some wiki, some not. I see it as little different to email for the post part. PBP and me were in a private message that he initiated and we began to talk. I don't believe that was a wrong thing. As for deciding policy, deciding to ban someone, etc., must never be done on IRC. I totally agree with that. Hope this helps you understand my way of thinking, fr33kman 19:38, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- Fine, I can accept discrete discussion. But never should on-wiki decisions be made off-wiki unless complete anonymity or such like is required. This is a case of a disruptive editor, with a lengthy record of blocks, who was indef blocked. I go to bed and wake up to discover that a clandestine discussion between the pair of you has resulted in him being absolved of anything. What? If you do that sort of thing, you should publish the discussion. The Rambling Man (talk) 20:08, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- Re: this. I don't appreciate the insinuation of subterfuge, there was none. I can decide to unblock/change block for whatever reason, and I can use IRC to talk to the blocked user if I so wish. NO community input was needed because it was me changing the block I placed. You can't possibly thing I'd do anything underhanded. If the community had banned him then me and him discussing an unblock on IRC would be wrong. But, the community did not ban him. Since a single admin can not community ban a person it is a perfect nonsense to claim that a) he was banned by me, b) I lifted the none existent community ban, or c) went against consensus. I wouldn't have blocked him twice if I were plotting with him! I now think you owe me an apology! (bet I won't get it) fr33kman 21:14, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- Listen, I'm happy to apologise for anything I've got wrong, but I'm saying and doing what I am for the benefit of this community. Completely opaque discussions resulting in on-wiki decisions are not acceptable. I don't have a clue what "apologising" or "forgiveness" went on in your IRC session(s). Nor do I wish to know. All I do know is that it's of no consequence here on-wiki. And that's pretty obvious. Why should a community accept under-the-counter decisions when they have no clue as to why or who or what or where or when things were said of any relevance to Wikipedia? I need said anyone banned him, I never said anything ever about a ban. In fact, I asked where this "ban" concept came from. Once again, I will happily apologise (and I sorry to see your flippant remark "bet I won't get it", you really think that poorly of me?) if I've done anything wrong, but I'm shocked how badly this community and its "elders" have dealt with such a disruption. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:21, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- I admit that IRC can be problematic, but it was me gathering evidence I wanted in order to decide whether or not to change my block. I can accept evidence in such a case from someone's word over IRC. If it gets proven wrong the block button is easy to press. My point is that it wasn't a ban, it couldn't have been a ban since one person can not decide to ban a person. As I have said, I do sometimes block indef, think about it some more and alter my block. I've told the community multiple times that this is what I do. If I used a time frame initially then I'm stuck with that time unless I decide to extend it (someone will complain) or reduce it (someone will complain). "You really think that poorly of me?" No, not at all, but you seem to think that poorly of me. Now that a ban discussion has begun, initiated by me, the community has the ball, so I restored the original block period. Anyway, let's stop going on at each other and let this thing do its business naturally. btw: I did speak very harshly with PBP about using the {{vandal}} template on you. It was the height of rudeness. fr33kman 21:31, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- I have no issue with you at all Fr33kman. Not at all. And I agree, the business does need to continue naturally. And it should engage more than just you, I and a couple of others. I only felt strongly about your course of action because I strenuously object to activity on IRC and even more so to that leaking over to Wikipedia. Simple as that. PBP has clearly no remorse for using the vandal template on me. That's a different discussion, but an important one nonetheless, not to mention the canvassing. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:35, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- I know you hate people using IRC, I used to be that way myself. I then joined and found it was much to do about nothing. I promise I'll be more open with its use in the future, but I still defend this particular use. I don't like to tell people off in public, like I said, it leaves them with little dignity. fr33kman 21:42, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Quite so, but we owe a duty of care to our editors, they need to know what's going on, how decisions are made, if not then admins etc here will be even more "god-like" which is never a good thing. Responsibility and accountability are core elements of our commitment to our editors, in my opinion. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:58, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
Hello The Rambling Man. Just asking, is Ana Ivanović now up-to-date? If yes, you should remove the tag from the article and let me know so that I can close the demotion request. Cheers! --Orashmatash 20:00, 17 November 2011 (UTC)
- Per my note there, it's up to date. The Rambling Man (talk) 17:18, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
- Okey dokey. I thought so, I just wasn't sure since you didn't remove the tag from the article. I'll close the request for you now. Cheers! -Orashmatash 21:48, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Abuse filter
changeHello The Rambling Man, I have fixed edit filter 12 ('one-case only article') yesterday. For the moment, the filter is simply tagging, but later it can be changed to warn/block. Thanks for pointing out the problem. --Eptalon (talk) 09:42, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Could you take a look?
changeHey TRM, hope all is well - long time no speak! Just wondering if you could take a brief look over my latest updates to Victoria line (see http://simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Victoria_line&action=historysubmit&diff=3223577&oldid=3200739), and let me know if they're all in order or not? With it being a VGA I felt it best to get some feedback, but probably doesn't require going through some form of 'reconfirmation' as they're only minor. Thanks in advance! Regards, Goblin 15:21, 13 December 2011 (UTC) I ♥ Chenzw!
PGA review
changeHey TRM! It's been some time since I've worked on that GA area and I've just posted a PGA here. I'd really appreciate it when you could take a look at it and help with comments (or you just fix minor stuff yourself). Thanks a bunch! -Barras talk 15:30, 8 March 2012 (UTC)
Thank you
change
Thank you, The Rambling Man, for taking part in my request for adminship, which closed as successful with 21 in favour and none opposed. I promise to do my very best in this new role! Regards, Osiris (talk) 06:56, 29 March 2012 (UTC) |
Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 17:09, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello again!
changeGood to see you back, even if it is only for one edit. Consider staying won't you please? Don't make me beg! Kennedy (talk) 13:43, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Kennedy, hope all's well? I'd like to pop back for a bit, what's going down? 14:00, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
- Glad to hear it! Yes all is well enough - hit and a miss - but generally fine thank you for asking. How have you been? The usual really, a small influx of new users recently so the joys of that... Kennedy (talk) 14:04, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Admin activity
changeThis is just notice to let you know your account was below the inactivity requirement of 100 edits and/or actions on October 1st. Should you still be below 100 on January 1st your admin tools will be removed per WP:Inactive administrators. If you know you will not be active in the next couple of months feel free to let us know and we can just remove them now otherwise it will be done automatically at the beginning of the new year. -DJSasso (talk) 13:32, 1 October 2013 (UTC)
Hi, Rambling Man. I noticed that you deleted these two articles that are at RFD. Are you planning to close the RFDs as well? I'm just asking because I track the RFDs that I initiate. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:12, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

An editor has requested deletion of Sponsor, an article you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").
Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2015/Sponsor and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also change the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. Hydriz (talk) 03:50, 26 April 2015 (UTC)

Where did you use the {{cite book}} on Bobby Fischer
changeHello, The Rambling Man, I have noticed you have done some citations to the article Bobby Fischer. The citations, in the box below, are:
Bibliography * {{Cite book|last1=Böhm|first1=Hans|last2=Jongkind|first2=Kees|title=Bobby Fischer: the wandering king|url=http://books.google.com/books?id=QdyWUw_fitEC|year=2003|publisher=Batsford|isbn=0713489359|accessdate=April 2, 2011|ref=CITEREFBöhmJongkind2003}} * {{Cite book| last=Brady| first=Frank |year= 2011| title=Endgame: Bobby Fischer’s remarkable rise and fall| isbn=978-0307463906|publisher=Crown Publishing Group (NY) |ref=CITEREFBrady2011}} * {{cite book|last1=Burgess|first1=Graham|last2=Nunn|first2=John|last3=Emms|first3=John|title=The Mammoth Book of the World's Greatest Chess Games|url=http://books.google.com/books?id=5PVrRAAACAAJ|year=2010|publisher=Running Press|isbn=0762439955|accessdate=April 2, 2011|ref=CITEREFBurgessNunn2010}}
Instead of adding them there, could you please add them where they are used? Thanks The Rumbling Man PokestarFan (talk) 21:33, 20 January 2016 (UTC)
- TRM hasn't been around in a while, so unless he gets email notifications, I'm not sure whether you'll get a response.
- The article uses a form of Harvard referencing. You can see exactly where those sources are used; refs 1, 5 and 7. Osiris (talk) 03:54, 21 January 2016 (UTC)
Side banners on your userpage
