Bill Ayers change

Hi Peter. If you don't mind, could you look over this article for me? Average readability is 9,2, but I think that may have to do with the amount of quotes (which I can't simplify). Any way, if you see anything that will help me improve the article, I would be most appreciative. Cheers, Lauryn (utc) 00:11, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I think there are quite a few areas, and not the quotes, where we could make some improvements. Do you use Firefox with English (simple) as the default language? It highlights non simple words so that you can see at a glance where changes/links need to be made. I will get a chance to look at the article in more depth a bit later, and being an old lefty, I will enjoy doing it. Peterdownunder (talk) 02:12, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, cool. I appreciate you doing this. I actually use Safari, which is Apple's default browser because Firefox seems to hog too much CPU. However, there should be no issues to use it every so often and if i can fix it to highlight non-simple words, that we'll be even better. :) I hope you have as much fun with reviewing it as I've had with working on it, it's been awesome. Thanks again, Lauryn (utc) 02:16, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Firefox change

Hi Peterdownunder! I've just installed Mozilla Firefox, at long last! Now I can use Twinkle...the moment I've been so eagerly waiting for. :p But Peterdownunder, I think I heard you say once that with Firefox, you can make "unsimple" words get underlined or something like that? Would you be so kind to tell me how to do that? Yours gratefully, Classical Esther 03:36, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Install this addon and then make it your default dictionary by right-clicking in a field of text (such as a Wikipedia edit window) go to Languages in the menu that pops up and choose English (simple). Hope this helps, Lauryn (utc) 03:40, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much, Lauryn! :D I have. Now lots of the words are underlined with red - is that right? And by the bye, thank you anyway, Peterdownunder. :) Classical Esther 04:40, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Question change

Dear Peterdownunder, I have an enquiry. I saw on several pages that on picture thumbs, they usually didn't add a period (.). So, for instance, in the article Nose, it says, "Elephants have long noses called trunks" without a period. Is this correct? Should I omit the period at the end for thumbnails? Classical Esther 05:53, 21 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good question, the "thumb" is the caption for the picture, and is a sentence so I would assume it should. The Rambling Man is probably some one to ask this question. He spends a lot of time picking up errors of that sort. --Peterdownunder (talk) 06:01, 21 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Simple News Issue 24 change

GoblinBot3 (talk) 16:01, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Sparrows change

Good question. True sparrows (we won't even think about others...) are 30 or so species of what ordinary folk would consider very similar birds. They are the genus Passer. House sparrows (Passer domesticus) are one species, but they are split into maybe 50 sub-species! Why so? Well, since sparrows live near people and in towns they are maybe the most closely studied birds there are. And then birdy-people are a race apart, obsessive, competitive, mad...

Now, because the two pages are not too clear about this, it may be that the original editors did not appreciate the distinction. In Simple, we find sometimes a type species stands for a whole group, whereas elsewhere almost every rung on the taxonomic ladder has a stub to itself. It is clear we should have had a policy. The policy should have been to select the historically major taxonomic levels only, and do them systematically for vertebrates: Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus. Only in the case of very familiar animals should we go to species level. The taxo boxes in enWP are far too complex for our purposes, and I have cut many of them down in size. At the same time, pages with just a common name with no science and 'this animal is cuddly'-type content are too silly for words. Yet we see both extremes on Simple.

Since most people think a sparrow is a sparrow, we could merge the two pages on Simple, making House Sparrow a sub-section. I think many people are happy if they can tell a sparrow from a thrush... Macdonald-ross (talk) 07:42, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

People will write about what interests them which is not always what is needed. I think the merge idea is good - we can always separate them again if someone starts writing about the other 30 species. I was amazed to read that numbers are declining because here (Australia) they are an invasive species. --Peterdownunder (talk) 08:02, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I write my first article now. Hey, what is this? Nataly8 (talk) 13:07, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Good luck with the article. An IP block. An administrator has blocked this IP address. The user wants an adminstrator to lift the block, but in this case they have not added any reasons, so it is most likely the block will stay in place. --Peterdownunder (talk) 13:12, 7 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just finished with Aang. Did he need simplification? Nataly8 (talk) 08:20, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nataly8, it needs lots of simplification. It is not yet even close to being in Simple English. There are too many complex words. You need to go back to the basic word list. Looking at the opening paragraph of Aang with the tools at this site Words Count it gives a Grade Level of 18 - Grade Level 8 word be a good target. The Flesch Kincaid Reading Ease score is 26, it should be 70 or higher. If you create pages that are too complex, they may be deleted. --Peterdownunder (talk) 10:58, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Will you help me please? Nataly8 (talk) 11:01, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Nataly8, this is something you will need to do yourself. Copying pages from Enwiki and only making a few changes will mean the article will be deleted. You need to carefully read the basic word list, Wikipedia:Basic English combined wordlist - if your article has words that are NOT on the list, you will need to simplify the word, or add a link. --Peterdownunder (talk) 11:16, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am starting with the simplification of Aang. Nataly8 (talk) 11:41, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
