Rob Ford

We sort of bumped heads a while ago. Generally when there is a "Under Construction" banner on a page it means an editor is actively editing. Otherwise there can be edit conflicts, which we just had. No harm though, just mentioning it for future reference. I've since removed the banner so feel free to edit all you like. In bringing over part of the article from enwiki, I found some of the source citations were to dead links and I found two that failed verification. But most of them checked out. So just a heads-up. DEFAULTSORTs and other sort keys

Re José Emilio Pacheco: you might not have known, but sort keys (whether in DEFAULTSORT or not) should not have diacritics in them. The sort key for articles whose titles have any letters with diacritics should replace such letters with the English equivalents. Also, any article whose title has any diacritics should have a DEFAULTSORT, whether or not it would otherwise need one, so that a sort key without diacritics can be specified. Make sense? Categories by nationality: sort keys

I noticed that on some of the categories for Norwegian actors, you added a sort key of "Norway". When a category name has a nationality in it (like "Norwegian") that should be the sort order, not the country (such as "Norway"). In most cases the articles would sort the same anyway, but not in all cases, so please keep the sort order/key matching the category name. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 20:38, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Sort keys in templates

Hi, TDKR. A few times recently I noticed you using an asterisk as the sort key for categories in templates. When a template is in a category that is not just for templates, the sort key to use is a lower-case tau. There are a couple of ways you can get that character:

• Copy and paste it from either another template or the article tau. If you use the latter, be sure to copy the lower-case character, not the upper-case one.
• Code {{subst:tau}} as the sort key. When you save the template, that will be replaced with the correct character.

Well, you would create one or more subpages of your user talk page, and move old conversations there. You could have more than one page, based on the dates of the conversations. As an example, my talk page is archived by year. That means that each archived conversation is on a page like User_talk:Auntof6/Archives/2013. (That page is also kind of long, but the archives don't get accessed very often so it's not as much of a problem.) I could do it for you if you like, but it would be good if you were able to take care of it yourself so you could maintain them going forward.

I'd really recommend automated archiving, though. You could set it up so that conversations are archived when no one has posted in them for a number of days that you determine. The archive pages could be by year, like mine, or by month, like Osiris'. There are other options, too.

So what do you think? If you'd like me to do some archiving for you, whether manual or setting up the automated process, let me know. I don't want to do it without you specifically asking me. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:33, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi! I don't want to interrupt your work, but could you please take a look at some of the changes I've been making to the articles you just created? I'm assuming you're still using the English Wikipedia as a source? There are a few dead links in some of the "External links" sections, so it'd be good if you could do a quick check before you add them here. You can do this using http://toolserver.org/~dispenser/cgi-bin/webchecklinks.py?page=simple:Elmer_Bernstein – I've just used Elmer Bernstein as an example. Don't forget attribution if you are indeed using the English Wikipedia articles.

Also, when the title has diacritics, remember to leave them off in the sort key description (like here, "Alvarez" instead of "Álvarez").

So, um.. I just wanted to make sure that you read all of my message...? You're still repeating the birth date or the death date on some articles – Edward J. Walsh, Lee Konitz, Sonny Rollins and ‎Phil Woods for example. And attribution is still missing. The article on Woods is also bare. There's no mention of why he's notable... I think you're rushing things again, because I'm having to follow after you and fix things. I think a lot of your new pages are starting to get more and more complex as well, without any explanation for complex terms. Thanks. I don't mean to be pushy. I took a week or so off before Christmas and I've been playing catch-up ever since. Your articles used to be easy to pass by, but they've recently been getting to be more and more work. In December, for example, you created a bunch of articles on cancer (like Duodenal cancer and Esophageal cancer). They've all got really complex medical terms in them, all unexplained, and the content is almost exactly the same as the versions on the English Wikipedia, except for a few words at the beginning. And none of them have attribution. What should I do? Normally I would quick-delete things like that. There are other problems with it too. One of the only changes you made on Anal cancer, for example, was to change "It is a distinct entity from the more common colorectal cancer" to "It is caused by colorectal cancer" – totally different in meaning. And the sentence where the other article goes onto explain how the two cancers are "distinct" ("The etiology, risk factors, clinical progression, staging, and treatment are all different.") is retained in your version without any real context. I hate to be a nuisance but what is happening with this? You're still doing most of the things that I pointed out above, and I can't see that you've really even begun to fix the earlier ones. Do you have any questions, or need any help with it? New examples since my last message above: the diacritics in the sort key on Jürgen Möllemann; the date repetition on Robert Sumner and Ryhor Baradulin; attribution is missing more often than not, even though they're all quite clearly copied from the English Wikipedia. And the copying is a major issue. You're getting better at making sentences shorter, but you need to take care with it and rework the actual phrasing and vocabulary too. Otherwise they're just exerpts, and in some cases muddled exerpts at that. Look at Gordon Tullock; you changed "...public choice theory, the application of economic thinking to political issues" to "...public choice theory. The theory was about the thinking to political issues." Great to see shorter sentences, but the sentence clearly does not make sense. Grammar needs a lot of work – in the same article, "another fellow economist"; in Oath of office of the President of the United States, "It must be done because it is order[ed] by the United States Constitution"; Molly Bobak, "to be sent in[to] a battlefield"; The Reagan Diaries; "For eight years as President, Ronald Reagan, and during those eight years, Reagan wrote in his diary". These are just examples. Most of the time there is barely ten minutes between creating pages. I suggest, again, that you take a bit more time to proof-read what you've written, check the grammar, check that the language is simple and coherent. Rushing things just creates work for other people. Even more so than on the regular English Wikipedia, the language here needs to be correct. I strongly recommend that you focus on going back over some of the pages that you've done and fixing the issues that I pointed out. Including the attributions that are missing. Articles about political office-holders

Please try to write these articles in a way that the text won't go out of date. For example, first say that the person is a politician (American politician, French politician, or whatever), then say something like "In 2012, he was elected Governor of Foo". Big Weekend

As I presume that you don't really know how a Big Weekend works I will explain.

1. There is a coordinator (in this case me) who keeps track of all new pages and edits to pages in relation to the subject of the Big Weekend (I will do it on User:Reception123/Big Lakes Weekend)
2. Users who contribute have to put a code in the change summary so that the coordinator knows that they are doing it for the Big Weekend (in this case the code is BLW)
3. At the end the coordinator counts up the pages and changes (they are automatically numbered) and sees how many they are.

Frank Lloyd Wright-Prairie School of Architecture Historic District

This article is not about a school. In this case, the term "school of architecture" means "type of architecture". The word is used kind of like it is in the phrase "school of thought". The district that the article is about has a lot of buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I've taken the article out of the "Schools in Illinois" category. See if you can find another article to put in the category so that it still has three articles. Keep in mind that, for our purposes, "school" means an educational institution up through secondary education: it does not mean colleges or universities. Categorizing templates

Hi, TDKR. When you create a template, please be sure to categorize it completely. Most templates need at least two categories. All templates need one or more "template categories" to indicate what kind of template it is (such as a navigational box, infobox, typing aid, external link, etc.). Most templates also need one or more "content categories" to indicate what the subject of the template is. Sometimes those can be combined in one category. Two templates you recently created, {{SAG Presidents}} and {{Gabriel García Márquez}}, didn't have template categories, so I added them.

Also, when putting a template in a category that is not a template category, the correct sort key to use is "τ" (a lower-case Greek letter tau), not a space or an asterisk. This is desribed at Wikipedia:Categories#Special sorting under "Special character sort keys". You can get the tau character from the Wikipedia edit screen under "Special characters" (between "Advanced" and "Help"). Another way to get it is to substitute the template {{tau}}. To do that, you would code this for the sort key: {{subst:tau}}.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but it's easy to check. Put the tag in the article and preview it without saving. Click on the link -- if it goes to an existing category then make sure it's for the person you're writing about (not someone else with the same name). If it's for that person then leave it, otherwise take it back out. BLPs need references

When you create an article about a living person, such as Annie Parisse, it needs to have at least one reference that directly supports a statement in the article about the person. It's not really OK to create an article with the tag saying it doesn't have references -- that just shows that you knew you were doing something wrong. If there is an enwiki article about the person, you should be able to find references there, even if you aren't basing your article on that one. Updating articles when a person dies

When you update BLPs about people when they die, please make sure to make the verbs correct in the entire article. In Ruby Dee, you changed some of them, but left "she has performed" and "she has acted". The grammatical term for that is "present perfect". It is used with people who are still alive because it implies that there could be more to come of whatever the action is. Be careful assigning categories about where people are from. Some countries have cities and states with the same names. I see that a lot with Japan and certain South American countries. In this case, the person was from the state of São Paulo (São Paulo (state)), not São Paulo the city. Articles whose titles have special characters, diacritics, etc.

I've been working on some cleanup stuff, such as defaultsorts. Did you know that when an article on this Wikipedia (or on English Wikipedia) has a title that includes special characters, it usually needs a defaultsort or other sort key with those characters replaced? I'm mentioning this to you because I noticed that a couple of the articles I had to change (Vladimír Čech and Zafer Önen) were created by you. There might have been more, because I didn't check all of them. Don't feel bad, though: I don't think most of our editors here know about that. Let me know if you have any questions. Once again, please use the recent death template appropriately

Lauren Bacall did not need the {{Recent death}} template. The purpose of that template is not to let people know that a person died recently. Having the death date in the article does that. The purpose of the template is to point out that the article is undergoing a lot of change related to a recent death. The article on Bacall was not getting a lot of changes, and was not likely to because her death was not controversial or particularly unexpected (it is common for elderly people to die from strokes).

The article on Robin Williams is a good example of when it is appropriate to use the template. There is still news coming out related to his death, so it should probably stay on for a bit.

Any time you're thinking of using the {{Recent death}} template, please review the documentation first to make sure you are using it appropriately. It explains what I said above. Thank you. --Auntof6 (talk) 19:51, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

You are still using {{Recent death}} inappropriately. As I have pointed out before, the purpose of that template is not to point out what people have died recently. It is to caution readers that an article is undergoing a lot of change, usually by multiple editors. If the article is not changing a lot (and "a lot" means something on the order of minute to minute, not a few times in one day), it does not need this tag. How can I get through to you on this? Of the four pages in the category, you added the tag to two of them. One, James Foley (photojournalist), is a page you created with the tag -- that article hasn't been changed in two weeks. Please read the documentation for the template, particularly the part in bold. That is not the case for any of the articles in the category right now. Even the one on Joan Rivers, which has several edits, was not being changed enough to need the tag. I am leaving this message for George.Edward.C, Jonny Nixon, and TDKR Chicago 101, because you three have been making most of the changes to articles like Deaths in 2014.

When you link the nationality or ethnicity of a person, please try to make sure that the link is not to a disambiguation page (also called "dab page"). There are a lot of words that can be nationalities or ethnicities, but which can also be other things (like languages, cuisine, etc.). Right now on the Deaths in 2014 page, there are links to Indian, Polish, and Serbian, all of which are dab pages. Looking at those dab pages, those links should be piped to go to India, Poles, and Serbia, respectively.

Here is a list of pages that might be used as nationalities, ethnicities, or something similar, but which are dab pages:

It can be hard to spot links to dab pages. I have something in my monobook.js file that highlights dab pages in yellow (as well as highlighting a few other things like redirects in other colors). You are welcome to copy it if you want. I think all you would need to do is add these two lines into your js file:

Subdivisions of Chicago

I was looking at random articles, and came across Near West Side, Chicago, which is described as a neighborhood of Chicago. I thought I'd try expanding it. When I looked at the enwiki article, I saw that it is actually considered a community area, not a neighborhood. Looking further, I saw that there are several more entries in Category:Neighborhoods in Chicago that appear to be community areas and not neighborhoods, and at least one, South Side, Chicago, that is a district. A couple of notes in keeping language simple

Hi, TDKR. I was just looking at the new article Stephen Collins. (Sad case, that, if it's true.) I just wanted to give you some notes based on what I saw there.

• When writing about what someone has said, use the word "say" or a form of it such as "said". That is preferred to words like "stated", "claimed", "revealed", etc.
• In each paragraph, it reads better if the first mention of the article's subject uses a noun instead of a pronoun. In articles about a person, instead of starting a paragraph with "he", "she", "they", etc., use the person's name. In articles about other things, use the name of the thing or something like "the company", "the city", etc.
• Link to important terms. In Stephen Collins, I added links for sexual abuse, television series, and media.
• Keep things simple. It's easy to use phrases we hear in the news every day, like "leaked" (when someone gets information they weren't meant to have), or "minor" when talking about a child, but that doesn't mean anything to a person who doesn't know English well. Also leave out words that aren't necessary. I removed "long-running", "short-lived", and one or two other things that didn't really help the article.

Categorize settlements (cities, etc.)

I recategorized your new category for Botswana cities to be directly under Botswana instead of under geography. I know that cities and other settlements do fall under political geography, but the geography categories here are for physical geography (mountains, rivers, etc.). Robin Williams

I undid some of your changes to this article because I believe you misinterpreted the news reports. Williams was found to have the physical characteristics of Lewy body dementia, yes, but saying just that he "had dementia" gives a wrong impression. As far as the hallucinations causing his suicide, the title of the article says that, but if you read the article you'll see that it says it could have been caused by them.
