note

change

Here, See also is Other pages, and External links is Other websites. Thanks for your work here, Griffinofwales (talk) 00:22, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Also, I've noticed that you use a lot of enWP content in your articles. When we do that, we have to provide a link to the version of the enWP article we copied from. {{enwp based}} is a good template to use. Griffinofwales (talk) 00:28, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
And if you would provide the link on all the pages you have created, it would be appreciated. I have fixed the section headings, but since I don't which version of the enWP article you used, I can't do that. Griffinofwales (talk) 00:39, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

<-I have looked closer at your articles and realized that they are direct copies of the enWP version. This is not acceptable. Please simplify (simplification is possible) these articles or they will be deleted. Thank you, Griffinofwales (talk) 00:46, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Griffinofwales! I will {{enwp based}} the articles on Monday (I won't have much time today, due to family commitments). Also, I will sort out the "See also" and "External links".
Most of the dormouse articles are indeed pretty much directly the same as the enwiki versions. Some of them I don't really think can be simplified (they basically say "xyz Dormouse is a rodent. It is found in Abc, Def and Ghi."), but some of the longer ones I will work on simplifying further. If you look at the longer articles (which I still need to place "enwp based" templates on), you will see that I worked on simplifying (see in particular Gilbert Thomas Carter and Order of St Michael and St George - they are not direct copies. I still need to work on those. If any of the articles which I added do end up being deleted, I would appreciate it if they could be userfied - however, I would appreciate it if they could be kept for at least a few days, so I can work on them (I don't see that they are candidates for QD) - I will work on them on Monday evening and Tuesday. Regards, -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 08:46, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
At the present time, they're not hurting anything but you should add the enwp based templates now. Simplification is part of it, but wikifying some of the harder words would also work. Thanks for fixing it. Griffinofwales (talk) 12:04, 24 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Rollback

change

If you're interested, I can activate rollback on your account here. There's not as much activity here as en (obviously), but I suppose it's nice to have if the need arises. Lauryn Ashby (d) 23:49, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

That would be nice - I don't do much anti-vandalism here at the moment though. However, I am going to be here more often (at the moment, I'm simplifying and adding {{enwp}} tags to the articles I've adapted from enwiki! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 23:52, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Done. And I have noticed you becoming more active here. It's nice when users from en come over to contribute and help us out with articles we are missing. It's much appreciated. :) Cheers, Lauryn Ashby (d) 23:54, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thank you :D I found that most of the dormice articles were missing, so added those! I'm not a biologist or anything, I just looked up one dormouse, and saw the rest weren't there. I have time to work on both en and simple, and simple does have more need for articles! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 23:56, 26 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ah, welcome. I was just about to give you rollback but noticed it had already been done... :) –Juliancolton | Talk 22:26, 27 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your correction. I need it. Before going on En and Simple WP, I had not written in English from 20 years... So it's very difficult for me. Best regards --Raymondnivet (talk) 11:39, 31 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Question

change

I'm new to this site so I was wondering if my articles Pleasant Grove Township, Des Moines County, Iowa and Lavatory – Lovestory are alright for this site. If you answer this, I'll have a good idea of what articles should look like on this site. Joe Chill (talk) 01:36, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've not been on here for too long, Joe (and welcome!) I have simplified both of the articles. I'd suggest reading Wikipedia:How to write Simple English pages, Wikipedia:Examples of simpler English, Help:How to change pages, Wikipedia:Aids for Writing Simple English and Help:Translate English into Simple English. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 02:01, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Page titles

change

Page titles should match what the English Wikipedia has it as. Please do not move pages to names that aren't the same as the English Wikipedia's to prevent interwiki issues in the future. Thanks, Razorflame 02:38, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

OK, I'll remember that! Thank you -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 08:46, 2 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Please do not remove redlinks from articles. They are there to show us which articles have not been made yet here. Thanks, Razorflame 01:36, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

See the reply below - if you look at the article, there was more than one instance of the particular link, so I delinked the 2nd (3rd, 4th) instance. This is a mistake when the first instance is in the infobox and the 2nd in the article - but I thought that in the main body of the article, there should only be one link to another article (on the first time it is linked). The fact that they are currently redlinks wasn't the reason I removed them, but because they were duplicate links.
Sorry for any inconvenience - and if policy/guidelines on SEW is to have more than one link in an article, I am happy to keep them there. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 01:49, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Question - AWB

change

Hi Steve, can you kindly explain this edit? I'm just a little concerned that you may be making such incorrect edits en-masse via AWB. Thanks! :) fr33kman 01:42, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

As Microsoft Windows was linked to in the Infobox, I removed the second link in the article. However, with hindsight, I shouldn't do that! There should be one link in the infobox and one link in the article. I will be more careful about those (most of the other edits were where the same article was linked to more than once within the article body itself). Thanks for contacting me about this - it's always nice to be given reminders like that! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 01:46, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
Generally, I like seeing multiple links to the same page in an article because sometimes, one has to scroll all the way up to where the first link was when they could've just clicked a link later on in the article. Razorflame 01:48, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
@Phantomsteve: No problems, thanks for the explanation. Take care with AWB, it can cause a LOT of clean up work if it goes wrong. :) fr33kman 01:52, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • @Fr33kman/Razorflame - I thought I had read that only the first instance was linked, so I re-read [Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Wikilinking]], which says Only link a word the first time it is used in the article, but do not link the same word more than once in an article., which is why I was delinking the 2nd (3rd...) instances. I know that Infoboxes (and "Other pages"!) are excluded from this - it's only when the link occurs a further time in the main article text. However, I will take that little bit extra care :D -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 01:57, 5 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
