Template messages for user talkpages

change

Jim, when you revert a piece of vandalism, such as the blanking of Ancient Greece, please put a message on the user's talk page. This helps to build up a picture for later occasions. The list of messages are at Wikipedia:User talk page warnings. Thanks, Macdonald-ross (talk) 07:32, 11 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Placing Commons category templates

change

Hi, Jim. I noticed that you added Commons category templates to a couple of articles recently. You probably didn't know, but there are directions about where to put those and other sister project link templates. The ones you added to Bay Area Rapid Transit and Body-painting weren't in the right place, so I moved them. The information about where they go is in the documentation for Template:Commons category. That information also applies to any sister project templates in an article (Wikiquote, Wikispecies, etc.). Please read that and let me know if you have any questions -- it's not completely straightforward, because placement depends on what else is in the article. Thanks! --Auntof6 (talk) 00:19, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Ah. Thanks. I've been putting them in places that result in a good layout on my screen. But of course they will look different on other screens. Jim.henderson (talk) 01:46, 11 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I'm Krett12. I noticed that you made a change to an article, Syrian civil war, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so! If you need guidance on referencing, please see Wikipedia:Citing sources, or if you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Lord Darnley

change

Thanks for creating the article on Lord Darnley! When I created the one on Margaret Tudor, I saw that we were missing articles on some of her more notable relatives, so thanks for helping fix that! --Auntof6 (talk) 06:26, 8 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I saw you add yet another red link to the fellow and decided he was much needed. Wow, I thought English politics of the time were ferocious but the Scotts make them look tame. You of course soon greatly improved him. Preparing for Wikipedia Day will make this a busy week for me but later I may get to adding a bit more and maybe seek other interesting red royals. RfD nomination of Full moon

change

An editor has requested deletion of Full moon, an article you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2016/Full moon and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. Really? This kind of message on the talk page of an editor who has been with us for at least 3 years? The edit was likely an honest mistake (or a bug in the mobile app which I recall he mentioned a few days ago). Chenzw  Talk  03:51, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
How about you let Jim say if he was offended by this? No offense of any kind was meant. I have never subscribed to "Don't template the regulars". I don't always use templates, but when I do it's because they are a quick shorthand way of getting a message across, nothing more or less. When I get a templated message, I assume it's because the sender didn't want to spend time writing something that we already have a template for. I don't have a problem with that. See en:WP:DTTR#AGF. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:05, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

No worry at all, even had I been right. As it happens, it was a tablet mistouch, not noticed due to haste. Yes, the vagueness of the template makes it slightly scary but we old-timers must know that even the rightly well respected don't always have time for precision. Jim.henderson (talk) 16:26, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

I don't appreciate that kind of thing either. There's a reason the template says "Welcome to Wikipedia". Krett12 (talk) 16:30, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply
In case someone may wonder, bugs in the iPad mobile app have given me less trouble in reading in recent weeks. Its editing feature is crude but I have never seen it do things that I would classify as buggy. I sometimes edit by browser in Mobile mode, partly because bugs in the reading part of the app often send me there, and partly to learn the various ways of using the little screen. As for the mistake in question, none of the above. Rather, I was using Visual Editor with the desktop page and iPad. I might blame it on the poor fit between iPad's browser and Vis Ed, but nobody would have seen the error if I had reviewed properly before saving. Mostly I use the little screen for Simple, first because the small article and small screen fit each other nicely, and second on the theory that errors here are less seen than in the real Wikipedia. However, I also do several edits there and in Coommons each week by iPad. This edit, on the other hand, is using the real computer, partly because it is long.   Hello, Jim.henderson. When you revert a user's changes, like you did earlier, don't forget to leave the user a message on their talk page. You may find Template:User talk page warnings/table useful when doing this, to let them know that the change was considered inappropriate, and to direct them to the sandbox. Thank you. Pkbwcgs (talk) 13:21, 14 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Can you please leave a warning after reverting vandalism? Without warnings, the administrators can't block the persistent vandals. J991 16:41, 10 May 2017 (UTC)Reply
Warnings are not required for blocking, nor are you required to warn. Its just some admins who like to see warnings to block. But warnings are not required for blocking. -DJSasso (talk) 15:08, 3 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Question nowiki

change

Is there a particular reason you added <nowiki/> with this edit? I've seen that kind of stand-alone tag in other places, and I usually remove it. Does it serve some purpose that I'm missing? --Auntof6 (talk) 13:01, 7 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't serve a purpose that I know of, unless the makers of Visual Editor want it to leave a distinctive mark. For short articles I mostly use VisEd, in part because I coach newbies at edit-a-thons and ought to be accustomed to the methods recommended for them. It often adds those unnecessary bits of code, particularly when linking words that are plural in the sentence but singular in the article name. When doing something with the old accustomed markup editor I also see and usually remove those tags.
OK, that would explain why I see it in so many places. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 13:43, 7 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Global warming

change

Hi I was wonder why you revert articles on global warming? AdmiralNelson (talk) 22:02, 20 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

Same reasons as for other topics, @AdmiralNelson: Reasons include vandalism, redundancy, irrelevance, bad grammar, and many other defects. You can look at my list of changes to find many examples. The last revert I did on the Global Warming article can be seen here:

Probably a good idea. Alas, the details of such an action require thought. With many other Wikithings on my plate, I'm unlikely to apply enough thought to this, during the summer. Jim.henderson (talk) 18:12, 24 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I would like someone to review my Simp article. I feel it has much more simplified language compared to the English Wikipedia version, but it might still be a little bit complex in my opinion. Hello Jim.henderson Would you like to write about Isabelle de Charrière (Q123386) for the Simple Wikipedia? That would be appreciated. Boss-well63 (talk) 14:33, 24 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

It's a flattering request, @Boss-well63: but I write few new articles and hardly ever a biography, and this subject is not even mentioned in Simple English Wikipedia. Username warning

change

Hi, I'm PotsdamLamb. I've just noticed that your name reflects a living person Jim Henderson who played baseball but is still alive. Thanks, 00:18, 20 July 2022 (UTC).Reply
This is not anything against you, and you are encouraged to choose a new account name that meets our guidelines - we hope to see you editing again soon!

Our username policy says how you should choose your username. Put simply, you should not have a username that people find offensive, advertises a real world group or company, or is confusing (for instance, if it impersonates another user).

If you have already made changes and wish to keep your changes under a new name, you may ask for us to rename your account. If you want to, please go here and ask for a new name. It will be changed by someone once they receive the request.

If you think that Jim.henderson fits inside the guidelines, feel free to tell me why on this page, and I'm sure we can come to some conclusion.

However, please be aware that the username you currently have, Jim.henderson may be blocked from changing pages without warning — if your name is listed here, you may want to tell people why you should not be blocked on that page.

Thanks again,

@PotsdamLamb: Seriously? Have you noticed how long this user has been around and how many edits they've made here and on enwiki? It isn't like "Jim Henderson" is a very unique name. I can say that the admins will not be blocking this user. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:28, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Auntof6@Fehufanga I’ve striken it out. I apologize to Jim for this mistake. Da LambTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 00:42, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Da Lamb Yes, these semi-automated tools sometimes slightly escape control; I've been Wikiing long enough to have suffered similar minor errors elsewhere; twice I was blocked from editing though both times the mistake was in identifying a vandal's IP range rather user ID. As for personal identification, couple years ago I noticed that Wikidata had given me a Library of Congress author number. That's flattering, but it actually belonged to Professor Jim Henderson of the University of Chicago, writer of books about economics. There are also at least two Canadian politicians and a hockey player. Off-wiki, decades ago I was tracked down by an abandoned wife of yet another Jim Henderson. Were it to go beyond a chronic minor nuisance, I would adopt a middle name such as "Wiki" or "Dingaling" since I seem to be the only Wikkan Jim Henderson that's a retired Bell System worker. Anyway, it's nice to know there's plenty of alertness among the Admin corps. Jim.henderson (talk) 12:29, 20 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Helping with a research project in Simplification

change

Hello Jim,

I'm reaching out to you because I am working on a research project on simplification and am looking to collaborate with domain experts.

A quick introduction: I am a researcher interested in text simplification and am working towards publishing a resource in text simplification based on Simple Wikipedia (quite a rich encyclopedia). We believe this resource, which we will make public, could be valuable to educate and increasing awareness of text simplification.

Some colleagues and I are looking to collaborate with domain experts in the creation of the resource. We've secured some budget for our research project, so there's the possibility to remunerate a few experts that would work with us.

I do not mean to spam you, so feel free to disregard/delete if you feel this is inappropriate (and I apologize). On the other hand, if you are interested, please feel free to reach out, either directly on Wikipedia or by email (phillab@berkeley.edu) and I would be happy to tell you more.

Thank you, and sorry again if you feel this is inappropriate,

Philippe Laban
