Need assistance about patrolling pages

Sir I want to be a patroller someday, for that what things I need to do and what part I need to improve? Dibyojyotilet's chat 11:17, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Category:Categories named after musical groups

As categories is a major interest in your wheel house, I bring this up here. For the most part, the cats in Category:Categories named after musical groups have no other cats attached to them. As such, much of that category is not tied to the genres of the bands. I linked a couple of the first ones to the correstponding cats (pop rock bands, hard rock bands, etc) but attention may be needed for the rest of the group. Pure Evil (talk) 15:38, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Pure Evil: Those cats should have no other cats attached to them. The categories for genre, etc. should go on the articles, not on the categories named after the groups. The same is true for categories in other "categories named after" categories. -- Auntof6 (talk) 16:35, 3 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

(talk page stalker) Microsoft Inc and Android Inc are two different companies, Android is by Google. I think she means Microsoft and Andriod because Windows 11 lets you run Android apps inside it. I haven't used Windows 11 in a while though, as I run Windows 11 in a virtual machine and I don't want to plug in the SSD to run it as it is too much work. Article contribution

Hi sir, I have created around 20+ articles articles few months ago. With few exceptions, I mostly simplified the pages and wikified well. If you can review those pages in your free time, even few recent works will ok, I will be satisfied whether I'm able in contributing well or not. Dibyojyotilet's chat 07:56, 12 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@DRC-B5: I checked a few of the pages you created. In general, I see complex words, phrases, and sentences that should be simpler. I also think some of them need better or additional categories.
If you used the English Wikipedia (enwiki) article as a basis for an article here, you need to include attribution on the talk page.
Here we use the heading "Other websites" instead of "External links".
A few specific comments about Taj Mahal Palace Hotel:
  • "Located at" and "located in" should be just "in" -- using "located" is not needed when describing where something is.
  • "Situated" is not needed, either.
  • Terms that need to be simplified or explained: flagship, captains of industry
In Icefield, you changed "distinguishable" to "measurable". Those don't mean the same thing. It's important to make sure you don't change the meaning when you adapt an article from enwiki.
In Gautam Adani, you used the term "current". That is not a good term to use here, because if that changes, then the article won't be correct.
Hope this helps. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:21, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ha that will help a lot. Thanks sir. I will try to refer your guidelines in this case for more improvement. Dibyojyotilet's chat 03:04, 13 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

AWB for school project banners

Hi Auntof6, I have noticed that most of the project banner templates for school projects have the same error in them. For the project "Notable Females through Inclusive Journalism", the template should be

{{class project|teacher=Castilibrary2|link=Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Notable_Females_through_Inclusive_Journalism}}

but instead is

{{class project|teacher=Castilibrary2|link=Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Notable_Females_through_Inclusive_Journaism}} or

{{class project|teacher=Castilibrary2|link=Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Notable_Females_through_Inclusive_Journaism]}}

For the project "Notable Women US Social Movements", the template should be

{{class project|teacher=Castilibrary2|link=Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Notable Women US Social Movements}}

but instead is

{{class project|teacher=Castilibrary2|link=Wikipedia:Schools/Projects/Notable Women US Social Movements]}}

(Obviously without the nowikis.) I already fixed a lot of these but there are probably at least 100 remaining with these errors. Do you think this would be good to fix through AWB and flood flag? I don't think the teacher would mind because it would fix the link to the projects. Lights and freedom (talk) 18:07, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Lights and freedom: That should be fixable with AWB. Let me make sure I'm seeing the specific issues:
  • Misspelling "journalism" as journaism -- add the missing L (in lower case)
  • Having a closing square bracket before the closing double curly brackets -- should remove the square bracket
Are there other issues? Did you want me to fix this (I'm willing to do so) or are you thinking you would do it? -- Auntof6 (talk) 18:54, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's all the issues I saw. I looked through a sample of the pages, but not every single page, so it's possible there's other errors, but I didn't see any. It might be better if you do it because you have the permission and I've never used AWB. Lights and freedom (talk) 18:56, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Lights and freedom: OK, I'll do it right now. I'll post here when it's done, and you can let me know if you think I missed any. -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:00, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Lights and freedom: Done. I made 134 changes. Let me know if you think I missed any. -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:18, 18 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Category Women

You removed in many many articles the category category:women (where there is not an appropriate sub-category). Why did you remove all these categories? SportsOlympic (talk) 21:36, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@SportsOlympic: I removed articles, not categories. I removed them because we don't need individual women listed there. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:38, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
These are all women, so they match perfectly in the category women. So or you should nominate the category for deletion, or creating appropriate subcategories. That is the way to build a category-tree SportsOlympic (talk) 22:36, 22 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Removing interwiki links

When you were removing interwiki links, did you check if the pages were connected by Wikidata? In some cases, I noticed that they are not. Unless there's a reason not to, I will examine all the pages where interwikis were removed and decide if connecting the Wikidata items makes sense. Lights and freedom (talk) 05:49, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Lights and freedom: I used to check for that, but I found that in the great majority of cases the pages were already connected, so I don't always check. I believe there's a process that makes the Wikidata connection if there is any interwiki hardcoded on the page, so there should be few if any of the pages that aren't connected. You're welcome to spend time checking it if you want. There are a few types of pages that don't get connected in Wikidata, but I don't think that's the case with any of the ones I just did. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:01, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Lights and freedom: Also, if there are pages not connected, they will show up at Special:UnconnectedPages. I'm currently working my way through the templates there. If you wanted to work on a different page type, that would be helpful. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:04, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
The simplewiki pages are usually connected to Wikidata, but in many cases the pages linked via interwikis are on a separate Wikidata item. For example, zh:Category:古颚总目 has its own Wikidata item, although it seems to be the Chinese equivalent of Category:Ratites and was connected via an interwiki link. I will fix these. Lights and freedom (talk) 07:34, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Lights and freedom: I would guess that the manual interwikis are more likely to be incorrect. When you link things in Wikidata, just be sure that things you link are exactly the same. It's OK to have a page not be linked if there isn't an equivalent. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:37, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I will try to be careful about that. Lights and freedom (talk) 07:39, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
And now that I look more closely at the edits you made, it seems that you were correct to separate them. For example, "Category:Pirates" linked to "Category:Piracy", and "Category:J-Pop groups" linked to "Category:Japanese vocal groups" I will not merge these Wikidata items. Lights and freedom (talk) 07:44, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Lights and freedom: Good call. In the work I'm doing with templates right now, I found some things connected on Wikidata that weren't even closely related! (Of course I fixed them.)
Did you find those things linked in Wikidata, or on the page? If in Wikidata, they should be fixed. -- Auntof6 (talk) 07:47, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
On the page. The interwiki links, that you removed, linked to pages which were connected to a different Wikidata item. Lights and freedom (talk) 07:49, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what to do about this situation. On Hurricane Henriette (2007), the interwiki links to German, Dutch, and Chinese were to sections of an article, instead of a whole corresponding article. I don't know if that can be resolved on Wikidata, unless a redirect is created. Lights and freedom (talk) 07:39, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Lights and freedom: I delete the ones that link to sections (as you see that I did there), and I don't link redirects in Wikidata. To me, the point of the interwiki links is to connect matching articles (or templates, or categories, or whatever), not matching parts of articles. As I said above, it's OK if there isn't a match for something; there won't be a match for everything. We're also not supposed to have local interwikis any more in any of the page types that we can link in Wikidata.-- Auntof6 (talk) 07:44, 31 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Adding broken image

Do you intend to fix the broken template you added back to Central line (London Underground). I removed is as it was broken and could not be easily fixed without replacing the missing image on commonens. It also adds little useful info to the page. As such, it's only use on that page is to create an error. Pure Evil (talk) 16:37, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

While on the subject of errors. Do you also intend to fix the 5 errors on Template:Usc-title-chap/doc. I spent the last few weeks fixing the host of link in link errors only to have you add another 5 just as I cleared the list. Pure Evil (talk) 16:47, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Pure Evil: First, I did not notice that you had previously removed the Central Line template, so my putting it back is not a comment on what you did. I found an unused template and looked for a place to put it to use rather than nominating it for deletion. I didn't even notice the broken file link. In my opinion, the template as it is is useful, even with a broken file link.
On the template doc page, please be more specific, because I don't see any errors there.
Finally, please assume good faith. Your tone is a little combative and I don't appreciate it. -- Auntof6 (talk) 18:20, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I do not appreciate experienced users creating errors by not paying attention to what they are doing. I run around fixing problem only to have admin revert my efforts and re-add broken material because they failed to see what they were doing. It is not like this is the first time I have had more work created by you not paying attention to what you are doing. This is not the first time I have had to comment here to inquire about why to created an error and did not notice what effect your actions have caused. I even just let it go on the doc page until you did it again when you reverted my actions and added a broken template. Those errors are quiet one and are likely to go unseen. Adding a page to an error category that shows up on the page is another matter. It only takes seconds to look and see you caused an error. Mistakes happen, but this is not the first few times..
On the template doc, there are five cases of a link being in another link. Never assume the En. version of a page will not create error. There are hundreds of thousands issues there that need attention. Blindly coping their pages without looking to see what errors you bring with them just creates work for others. Cleaning up those errors prevents actual improvements to the project. Pure Evil (talk) 20:55, 6 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Dustin Hoffman

At Dustin Hoffman the cited source [1] definitely says that he is Jewish. ("Hollywood veteran actor Dustin Hoffman is now more Jewish than ever", "Only when The Hoff married his second wife, Lisa Gottsegen in the early 1980s, did he start to embrace his Jewish identity") Being Jewish is both an ethnicity and a religion, so someone could be non-religious or atheist and still be Jewish, and would be Jewish if they are born in a Jewish family (although I don't know if this is true if they convert to another religion). I don't necessarily agree that all Jewish people need to be categorized as such, but it's not incorrect. Lights and freedom (talk) 21:14, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Lights and freedom: Thanks. The articles didn't have a source for a statement saying that he himself is Jewish, but this one could be used. I'll look at it again in a bit: I'm in the middle of something else right now. No objection if you want to address it, but you don't have to. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:22, 15 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sidebar templates

Should sidebar templates go in the "navigational boxes" categories? Lights and freedom (talk) 21:22, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Lights and freedom: They do if they are a navigational type of template. I think all the sidebar ones I've ever seen were for navigation. It's helpful if they're (also) in a sidebar template category of some kind. If there are enough of them in a given template category, you can make a subcat for the sidebar ones, so people looking for a navbox can either look there or not look there, depending on what they need. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:24, 18 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Question

Can you delete all the articles i've created? 40.138.162.44 (talk) 06:16, 2 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

recent edits related to Becky (slang)

Question 1: Was ‘’ don’t have any clue of’’ not simple enough or not right for the Simple English page?

Question 2: Was the word ‘’stigma’’ the wrong term, was it complex or simply didn’t meet word rules?

Question 3: Was there some reason the word ‘’climber’’ was removed from between Becky Sharp and protagonist? Can you please clarify?

Although I’ve gone over the word list it doesn’t tell everybody which word may be complex or give everything related to why such words are not simple on this Wikipedia. The editors and article creators must be careful which word goes in what article, and I’m trying to be careful myself. Angela Kate Maureen Pears 18:35, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Tropical Storm Angela: Answers:
Answer 1: That phrase does not have an encyclopedic tone.
Answer 2: "Stigma" is a complex word.
Answer 3: In the enwiki article, the word "climber" was part of the phrase "social climber". In the article here, you didn't include the word "social", so using "climber" by itself didn't make any sense. Even with the word "social, though, that phrase would have required explaining.
The thing about being careful about what words are used is that it requires having a sense of what words are complex and which ones are simpler. Not everyone has that sense. The word lists are a starting point. The lists are not always enough, but it's the only concrete thing we have. -- Auntof6 (talk) 18:58, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Jonathan D. Ross article

Hello @Auntof6, I notice you added the notability tag for my article I created for the source. As I am a newer contributor for Wikipedia i felt like the source had some type of notability. I also got in contact with Wikipedia administrator and was told difference. EmilyT111 (talk) 08:02, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@EmilyT111: Are you saying that another administrator said the article showed notability? What did they say showed it? -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:04, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I totally respect your decision on "notability tag" please just give me some time look around and change something up. Please as my first article, don't tag for "deletion" please. Yes please hold as I find the message with the Wikipedia Admin. Thank you! EmilyT111 (talk) 08:15, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EmilyT111: I'll wait for a short time, but the fact that it's a user's first article doesn't come into play. We make decisions only based on what's in the article. If people feel that it doesn't show notability, you can always move it to your userspace to work on until notability is shown. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:20, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Yes total understand I rather have it move to user space than deletion. May I ask, does the source have any-type of notability? Like maybe 50/50? EmilyT111 (talk) 08:23, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EmilyT111: Well, sources need to be reliable, not notable. It's the subject of the article that needs to be notable according to Wikipedia's definition of notability. So please ask your question again: are you asking if the subject is notable, or if the sources are reliable? -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:27, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry yes, I know the subject not 100% notable but is there anytype of notable for the subject? EmilyT111 (talk) 08:32, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EmilyT111: I don't see any notability. That's why I placed the tag. What do you think makes him notable? -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:45, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Are you an wiki admin? and I mean your the expert so I leave at that and work on the article page EmilyT111 (talk) 08:55, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EmilyT111: I am an admin, but that doesn't make me any more of an authority on this than anyone else. Anyone could have placed that tag. I'm still interested in knowing what you think makes the person notable. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:12, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
As I am a new editor I passed by his instagram and notice he had good following based and the things he did, so I looked him up did some research and though his references had some type of notability. I'm sorry though, I though you put the tag as it was attach with your username. I totally understand your point of view and keep it in mind on the article. EmilyT111 (talk) 09:58, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EmilyT111: I did put the tag there. As for Instagram, having a large following on social media doesn't make someone notable. -- Auntof6 (talk) 17:29, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@EmilyT111: Also, remember that it is not enough to have references. The article must make statements that show notability, and there must be references to support those statements. For example, having a reference for what high school he attended doesn't help, because attending a certain high school doesn't make a person notable. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:07, 24 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Image sizes

Hello!

Images should not be sized in px, unless we have an overriding reason (such as a map with clickable links, where the locations of the links are given in px, or a table header set to be the same width as the table). The reason for this is that readers may have their own preferences. This may be because they have high-resolution monitors, and so need the images to display at a larger px size, or because they have vision problems and magnify the articles, and so want the images to display at a smaller px size. They can do this by changing their default settings. But if we set an image to a specific size, we don't allow them to do this. So, perhaps an editor thinks that a particular image should be a bit larger than the standard 220px, and so sets it to 250px. But you've set your default setting to 300px, so for you that image displays smaller rather than larger.

In this case, if upright=0.5 isn't a good size (50% of the reader's chosen default display size), you can change the number. Or leave out the number altogether; "upright" by itself will reduce an image to 75% of the reader's default setting.

I discovered the reasons for all this only recently, and have unfortunately been using px myself for over a decade. I've restored my edit, but I'll leave off if you reject it again. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:24, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Kwamikagami: Sorry if I used px when I shouldn't -- that wasn't the issue I saw. I undid your changes because it looked like they left very excessive white space in the table. However, looking in the history now, I don't see all that white space. Maybe something else changed before I did the revert? In any case, it looks fine now. I apologize for the mixup. -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:30, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
No prob. I just checked again, and the before and after versions look practically identical on my system.
I'm trying to remember to check articles for px when I edit for whatever reason, to make up for the decade I spent adding px sizes to images. Kwamikagami (talk) 20:38, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Kwamikagami: Thanks for doing that cleanup! -- Auntof6 (talk) 20:39, 25 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your QD decline of User:Cintrocity

I just noticed that you declined my QD request for that page. Why? It was created by a blocked user in violation of their block. It is also misleading because it says “Nest did nothing wrong” This refers to user:Nestofbirdnests who is a blocked sockpuppet and has done something wrong. Please reconsider your decline. Illusion Flame (talk) 10:51, 28 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Illusion Flame: G5 doesn't require pages to be deleted just because they meet the G5 criteria. Specifically, it says "This does not mean that an administrator must delete every article created by a blocked or banned user who is evading their block."
Besides that, it looks like Cintrocity wasn't blocked at the time the page was created. The page was created on 20 April at 16:35 UTC. They were blocked on 20 April at 20:58 UTC, after the page was created.
Another issue in my eyes is that we are a bit too quick to delete user pages. I don't think this user page is bad enough that it needs to be deleted. If you feel differently, I have no objection to you using the RFD process. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:50, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
I have nominated the page for RFD. Thanks anyway! Illusion Flame (talk) 11:53, 29 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

An editor has requested deletion of Category:Disorders, a page you created. We appreciate your changes, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in the nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Please comment on the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2023/Category:Disorders and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also change the article during the discussion to address the nominator's concerns. But you should not remove the requests for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you very much. Rathfelder (talk) 08:04, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Help with a student's account

One student in my class project this year, User:Princez Vilda, is unable to make edits when logged into her account and using our school IP address. It seems like there is some kind of condition on her username that isn't on the other accounts that students have created on their own or that I have made for them. The list of other students for this year's project are here. Would you be able to look into this and see if any setting/conditions could be changed? One thing I've noticed is that there is a user page for user:Princez_Vilda and another one for user:Princez_vilda, the only difference is the capital letter in the second word. They are for the same person. On the user page with a capital V, there is no button for "User contributions" while the user page with the lower case v. What can we do so the user can resume making edits without any blocks or problems? Swim123blue (talk) 03:48, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

There is no user registered with the upper-case V, only the one with lower-case V. (That's why there is no "User contributions" link.) Because that user isn't registered, we should delete the upper-case user page, but I will wait until we finish this discussion. User Princez vilda created their user page, so they were able to edit at least that much. If the user wants their user name to have the upper-case V, they can either create another account (that's allowed as long as it's in compliance with the policy at Wikipedia:Sock puppetry) or ask for the lower-case one to be renamed.
As far as being unable to edit, I would need more info.
  • What is the user trying to edit and what change are they trying to make?
  • What message(s) does the user get when the edit fails?
I'll ask my fellow admins for input, because some of them know more about this stuff than I do. -- Auntof6 (talk) 04:40, 17 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

QD of WorldWide CDI Organization Article

Hello, I need help from you as the administrator of Wikipedia, the article I wrote is unreasonably deleted, as G4 (Recreating deleted content), however, after reading more about this, I found out that an article according to this criterion is deleted only if the copy is identical or similar, but the content of the article is completely different at the moment, I am as many as 2 years improved this article, added sources (including authoritative ones), but no one checked anything and deleted without discussion, how to recreate a previously deleted page, please help. Thanks Nikolay Zhivtsov (talk) 09:29, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Nikolay Zhivtsov: I looked at both versions, and I agree that they are different. Please use WP:Deletion review to ask for the article to be restored. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 10:23, 4 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Could you help

Just mentor me a few times as I work on the Savannah page? I want to bring five article to 'very good' here, it seems like the production of those articles has dropped off, while also learning more about my area. I don't expect you to hang over my shoulder, but just look over my work as a finish section chunks so I can improve with confidence? If not, do you know someone who would?

Thanks so much, I just finished the lead if you want to look that over. Philocalyst (talk) 15:04, 10 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Philocalyst: I will try to help some, but might not be able to do very much at a time.
Here are some things I see in the lead:
  • There are sentences that need to be divided so that the sentence structure is simple. It's often a good idea to have just one verb in a sentence. Examples:
  • First sentence in the first paragraph: it would be better to have one sentence saying it's the oldest city in Georgia, and a separate sentence saying it's the county seat.
  • First sentence in the third paragraph. I would make that two sentences. The first sentence would say that the downtown area is one of the largest NHL districts, and a separate sentence would say what the district includes.
  • Last sentence in the third paragraph: this could also be divided at the point where the comma is.
  • The second paragraph has a list of tourist attractions. A long list like that can be difficult to read, especially if each item has a parenthetical note after it. It might be better to make that a bulleted list, except that isn't usually done in leads. Another way would be to remove the parenthetical notes and put that detail in the points of interest section if it isn't already there.
  • There are a few complex words and phrases, including key (as used in the first paragraph), "of note", consists, largely

The Smoothie King notability tag warnings

Are there reasons by which the article was tagged saying that it may not be notable even when I attributed the page and used two information sources for it? Something is up. Can you please clarify? Angela Kate Maureen Pears

@Tropical Storm Angela: Nothing in the article indicates notability. To show notability, you need to say something that shows notability, and back that up with a source. The sources in this article appear to be for the name of the company and the date and place of founding. Neither the name of a company of the date/place of founding make a company notable -- every company has a name and was founded somewhere and sometime.
By way, it would help people reply to you if you use a signature that allows for a reply button. I'm not sure what's required for that; maybe it's a date/time stamp. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:41, 23 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron: The user has received only level 1 and level 2 warnings. Please continue with appropriate warnings on the user's talk page. Once the warnings get to level 4 and they vandalize again, report at WP:VIP. Thanks. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:15, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Who decides whether a user can get warnings? Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron (talk) 01:20, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron: Any user can leave a warning when they see a problem edit. Wikipedia:User talk page warnings shows the kinds of things that we have warning templates for. The tool Twinkle helps automate the process of leaving warnings, and I think there are one or two other tools as well. Take a look at the page I linked, and let me know if you have questions. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:25, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for pointing me to the page. It appears that I should put the heading ===Warnings=== on their talk page and then {{Uw-vandalism4}} at the top of the "Warnings" section (because there have been multiple warnings). Is that correct? Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron (talk) 01:30, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron: Instead of a heading of "Warnings", we usually use a heading with the month and year, such as "==July 2023==" (note that it is a level-2 warning with only two equal signs on each side of the text). Also, please remember to substitute the warning template. That means that instead of {{uw-vandalism1}}, you would put {{subst:uw-vandalism1}}. Some warning templates require parameters: see the one you want to use for details. Of course, the number in the name of the template would increase with each subsequent warning, until you get to level 4. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:35, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
I read the "Layout" section of Wikipedia:User talk page warnings. The second bullet point says:
  • Warnings should be grouped by date under the heading "Warnings". If there have been multiple warnings, add the template {{Uw-vandalism4}} at the top of the Warnings section.
When does this apply?
I also have another question. Does the number of equal signs on each side of the text affect the level of warning? Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron (talk) 01:38, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron: It says to leave the "last warning" if there have been multiple warnings. That should probably be changed, because we usually leave warnings in order: levels 1 through 4, with level 4 being the last or final warning. We like to see a progression of warnings unless a user does something so bad that it calls for an "only" warning, which is level 4im. "Only" warnings are given only for extreme things like threats of personal harm, not for general vandalism.
The number of equal signs on the text indicates the level of the heading, not the level of the warning.
Hope that helps! -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:43, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I have added a warning to User talk:Amirr206. Could you please check if it is correct? As an unrelated topic, Category:20th centuy in Haiti is spelled wrong. Could you please move it, or maybe it is possible for me to move it? I think I could change the category on each of the pages in it, but then I would have to create a new category with the new spelling. Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron (talk) 01:49, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Epsilon-Minus Semi-Moron: The warning looks perfect!
I think you could have moved the category, but I did it for you. The steps you would follow to move/rename a category are:
  • Do the move to the new name.
  • Update everything that was in the old category to be in the new one. (Moving doesn't do that for you.)
  • If the old name shouldn't be left as a redirect, ask for it to be deleted using quick delete option C2. (Admins, like me, can do the move without leaving a redirect behind, which is what I did.)
If the category being renamed has a lot of entries, you might want to ask someone who can quickly update them to do that part for you. In this case, I used Cat-a-lot to quickly update them. -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:59, 11 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Valley of the Kings

It is already in Category:Burial monuments and structures. The article is not actually about the valley - its about the monuments there. So I think it should be in Category:2nd millennium BC buildings and structures Rathfelder (talk) 17:35, 20 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Rathfelder: My responses:
  • This could fit under the monuments part of monuments and structures because a monument doesn't have to be a structure. I'm not sure it belongs in that category, either, though.
  • The article is about the valley. It's called "Valley of the Kings", not "Tombs in the Theban Necropolis". The most notable thing about the valley is, yes, the tombs, so it makes sense to list them and talk about them, but the article starts with "The Valley of the Kings is a valley in Egypt." It doesn't start by saying that the Valley of the Kings is a group of tombs. It contains the tombs, but isn't a tomb itself. And the valley existed before anyone carved any tombs there; it didn't stop being a valley just because people made so much use of it.
  • There is a section on geology and climate; buildings and structures don't have geology or climate. Valleys do.

WP:ONESTRIKE is limited to enwiki?

Hello, your recent comments sounds like WP:ONESTRIKE is limited to enwiki, but the policy page doesn't say like that (it says "users who have been blocked indefinitely or banned on other Wikimedia Foundation projects"). For the recently reported account, idwiki and skwiki declared as global vandalism, so I thought WP:ONESTRIKE is valid. If there is anything wrong with my understanding, please let me know. @MathXplore: ONESTRIKE is not limited to enwiki. Sorry if I implied otherwise; I probably didn't think of checking more than enwiki, but I should have. I will keep this in mind for future reports. Hi, with this RfD, the discussion is now archived in Wikipedia:Simple talk/Archive 150#Bring back WP:NAC. Should the template be deleted? --Ferien (talk) 16:04, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Ferien: I just read through the archived discussion again, and I'm seeing a consensus for not having NAC. Since the discussion was archived before the consensus could be declared, I think we should make it official before deleting the template. To make it official, I would add something to Wikipedia:Deletion policy. -- Auntof6 (talk) 21:35, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ok, I think adding it to policy would be a good idea. As I was quite involved in the discussion, I'll avoid doing that myself. --Ferien (talk) 21:36, 15 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Cat name

Shouldn't Category:Government by country be plural (governments) as it is a collection of governments? Also would apply to government by continent. Pure Evil (talk) 22:21, 25 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Pure Evil: I guess it depends on whether you look at "government" as a general concept or as something more concrete. Enwiki and Commons use the singular form like we have. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:59, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
The categories are collections of singular items in both cases. As such they are more than one item. plural. What is the reasoning en and commons use to defend using a singular term to explain s plural subject? Per the en guideline on naming conventions - Names of set categories should be plural. I never added this part to our cat naming page so theirs is the guideline to use on the matter. En does not follow its own guideline as a collection of articles about the government of a nation is part of a set and not a topic. Articles about government itself would be a singular topic. Categories about aspects of different governments would be parts of a plural set of categories. In the end, the category covers the individual governments of each country, not the concept of government itself. The first is a set, the second is a topic. Pure Evil (talk) 01:41, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
I do see the difference from the general concept (the idea of Government) and the concrete aspects (the actual entities). The first would be a topic and as such is singular. The second though is a set and plural. In this regard, we are classifying the individual governments of these countries. We are not, generally speaking, looking at the concept of government in these countries although that article could not be ruled out and should likely be in both Government of <nation> and Government. These categories are collections of the concrete items and as such is a set of items. Pure Evil (talk) 01:48, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Pure Evil: I guess I see it the other way. You say that "government" as a topic would be singular, but it wouldn't: it would be collective, neither singular nor plural. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:32, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
The problem there is that you are completely violating the guideline.
Government is a topic article. A category about the topic is a topic category. It should be singular.
This is not a topic. The individual agencies that make up the goverment of each nation are sets of subjects. They, as a group, are a not singular items. The individual aspects (government of Ethiopia) are essensially collective nouns, but the set of these nouns is no more collective than American families is the set that includes the collective groups, the Smith family, the Jones family and the White family. The individual groups are collective, the mass collection is plural. It is not American family unless you are talking about that specific topic which we are not. We are talking about the collection of the individual subsets. Pure Evil (talk) 03:06, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Pure Evil: Like I said, we see it differently. If you think the category name should be changed, I suggest starting a general discussion. -- Auntof6 (talk) 03:10, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Your bot

I was just wondering if you had plans to run your bot again. I noticed I have the option to run a script on User:BobDaBot that adds a reference section and reflist to articles with sources but the section is missing. However I saw your bot can do this as well but hasnt edited since May. https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Pywikibot/noreferences.py Thank you. Bobherry Talk My Changes 23:34, 2 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Bobherry: My bot is only used manually through AWB, and I use it for that task as part of clearing CheckWikipedia errors. It doesn't automatically add a reference section or reflist template -- I manually add them so I can be sure they go in the correct place. Sometimes I find a references heading without the template and I have to move the heading because it's in the wrong place. I'd be (pleasantly) surprised if a bot could know where to place a references section, because that depends on several things. There's something in the MOS about where the section should go in relation to the other end-of-article sections.
In any case, while I would eventually do that task again, I'd have zero objection to a bot doing it -- even less than zero if that were possible! Has your bot been approved here? For that task? -- Auntof6 (talk) 01:51, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Bobherry: To add onto this, I noticed that BobDaBot doesn't have the bot flag and doesn't have any current request for bot status. Because of that, I have indeffed it, which is our standard procedure. If you create a bot request for something that the crats might be willing to approve, they will remove the block as they see fit. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:19, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
I was given permission by @Ferien: on the WP:DISCORD server and they said it would be okay to make it as long as it only edits in my userspace or it's own userspace it does not have to be flagged or approved yet in that case. I will DM them about it. Bobherry Talk My Changes 12:01, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Bobherry: Understood, and thanks. I also need to remember that it's easy to read a wrong tone of voice into online communication. -- Auntof6 (talk) 13:21, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Just to clarify, for both Bobherry and Auntof6, as I was pinged: I said off-wiki that the bot would be allowed to operate in userspace, per the bot userspace page linked below, but wouldn't consider Discord, IRC or email a replacement for on-wiki bot requests. I was only saying it was allowed because of the guideline, not me allowing it specifically, and would like to note that all actual bot requests should remain on-wiki. --Ferien (talk) 19:48, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Correct. Bobherry Talk My Changes 19:51, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Per WP:FOLLOW en:Wikipedia:BOTUSERSPACE it is allowed to be made and not approved yet. "In addition, any bot or automated editing process that affects only the operator's or their own userspace (user pages, user talk pages, user's module sandbox pages and subpages thereof), and which are not otherwise disruptive, may be run without prior approval." Bobherry Talk My Changes 12:07, 3 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@TheDarkCoarkBoard: You're not being annoying. Yes, an RFD can close earlier than the indicated closing date if an admin feels it is justified. That mostly happens when all the comments support the same outcome, which they don't in this case. I'm not saying it wouldn't happen for this one, but it's less likely.
By the way, your only comment on the RFD has been to keep because you think the subject is notable. It's not enough to think that a subject is notable; notability has to be shown according to Wikipedia's definition of notability. -- Auntof6 (talk) 02:48, 15 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Fake multiple accounts and autobiography

Hello, I think there's a problem with the https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dylan_Besseau page.

The contributors who vote to maintain the page (unknown director and sources that look like sponsored articles, deleted from the French wikipedia) seem to be the director himself (see the history of the account https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Simple_english_pic , he only intervenes on his own page and on other actors' pages to add his films, he created the page of one of the participants in his documentary, it's clearly him).

Thank you for your help 2A01:CB1D:44C:F800:F53A:F05E:DFE2:12CE (talk) 17:29, 19 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Nobody is going to start off by looking for books published in 1883. Rathfelder (talk) 07:38, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Rathfelder: Then maybe these should be moved up to Category:1880s books. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:07, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
You need to think about the process. Most editors do not create categories. If there isnt an 1883 category they wont fill it. Putting a notice on this sort of category has no effect. Better to ask people to disperse large categories. Rathfelder (talk) 09:15, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Rathfelder: It does have a little effect, because there are some editors that periodically look at the category for underpopulated categories and either fill them or nominate them for deletion. It's true that it's not most editors, but there are at least two that I know of. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:17, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
Not for books. Rathfelder (talk) 09:18, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Rathfelder: For all of the ones that are tagged, because they are all in Category:Underpopulated categories. -- Auntof6 (talk) 09:19, 22 October 2023 (UTC)Reply
