tech guide needed!Edit

Could someone technically better versed than myself guide him? Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:26, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

"I lose my log in and the edit appeared to be done by anonymous. In my user page, I have exposed the IP address. What best could I do? Please help me. I have no experience regarding this! Haoreima (talk) 08:06, 20 May 2021 (UTC)"

@Macdonald-ross: @Haoreima: In order to gain access to the account the user needs to have an email address in their settings which will allow recovery. If they do not, they would need to create a new account and ask for the accounts to be merged to the new account. There is no way to recover a password as the are hashed on the back end and encrypted. PotsdamLamb (talk) 09:32, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
Adding - Haoreima are you trying to create a committed identity or did you have one? PotsdamLamb (talk) 09:41, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
@PotsdamLamb: Actually, I mean while editing, suddenly I was automatically log out. And, in one particular edit, https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/7536474 this one, it appears to be done by anonymous (it's actually my edit). BTW, I have re log in (I still remember my password). So, no need to create any new account. I just want to know whether this IP editing of mine will affect my user account's reputation (is it a multiple account abusing) manner? This is what I want to know. What can I do? @Ferien: If you know, please help me too. Haoreima (talk) 11:25, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
No it does not harm your account but the edits will show up as the IP and not you so you won’t be attributed to that. Technically you should try to logged on at all times. PotsdamLamb (talk) 11:49, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
@PotsdamLamb: Do I need to present my exposed IP address in my user page all the time? Can I remove that? If it's to exist in my user page, in what manner (way) is it to be put? Anything templates? Haoreima (talk) 12:13, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
No you do not need to have it exposed. PotsdamLamb (talk) 17:17, 20 May 2021 (UTC)
@Haoreima: If you would like to hide your IP address, please contact oversight. --Ferien (talk) 15:18, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Haoreima, you can send me an email, and point out the concerned edit. I can then hide your ip from public view. Don't worry, forgetting to log in happens quite frequently, it is nothing to worry about.--Eptalon (talk) 15:24, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
@Eptalon: Currently, I am not handy in email sending. The edit is here, please see https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:MobileDiff/7536474 Haoreima (talk) 15:29, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
@Haoreima: Sending an email is actually very easy. Simply go to simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/ and then put the user who you want to email on the end. So for example, to email me, you'd go to https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/Ferien. Then the title is just what you want the email to be sent as (you can just leave that as Simple English Wikipedia e-mail usually). Then write what you want to send in the box below. When you send the email, your email address will be sent to the person who you're sending the email. After that, you can let someone know that they've got mail by adding
==You've got mail!==
{{ygm}} ~~~~
to their talk page. You'll receive a reply in your email inbox. --Ferien (talk) 15:43, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
@Ferien: (1)Will the talk remain private? (2)Can check user or oversighters see our talk? (3)What if vandalism occur in the email chat? Haoreima (talk) 15:47, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
@Haoreima:
  1. Yes, definitely. CheckUsers can see if and when someone sent an email, but not the contents of the email.
  2. No. They can only see if and when someone sent an email.
  3. Abuse can be sent via email. If this is the case you can mute that user. And in case of someone who is socking to send you abusive emails, disabling email from brand new users can help.
--Ferien (talk) 15:52, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Hello Haoreima, I have removed the ip address from the page history. Ordinary users, and administrators will no longer be able to see it. It will remain visible to oversighters.--Eptalon (talk) 16:03, 23 May 2021 (UTC)
And yes, checkusers will be able to find it too, that's what the checkuser role was created for. Note however, there is a m:Checkuser policy on Meta, and all checkusers have agreed to it. Among other things, it forbids "fishing expeditions"; there always has to be a reason covered by the policy to perfom a check. Note that checkusers and oversighters have a legal obligation to keep such information private. --Eptalon (talk) 16:12, 23 May 2021 (UTC)

What the ........Edit

So I tagged an article for speedy and for some reason this was posted on the users talk page User_talk:2A00:23C8:3903:C01:1D9F:AC7F:8A80:BB39. Something is not right with the template and I am not sure where it got changed or how to access it. Can someone look into this, please? PotsdamLamb (talk) 00:09, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

User talk:119.246.19.202Edit

IP is blocked, however, they are spamming the same copyvio message on their talk page, and is flooding New Changes. I am requesting either:

  1. Block them from editing their talk page
  2. Add page protection to the talk page

Thanks, and have a good day. ShadowBallX (talk) 19:50, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

I would rather the page be deleted to get rid of this WMF-banned editor's edits from recent changes. --Ferien (talk) 19:52, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Administrator impersonator towards Operator873Edit

  • @Operator873:. User:Operate273 see their talk page User_talk:Operate273 and it directs people to see the discussion on another new users page User:SpongeBoy67238. I think both need to be permanently banned with no TP or email access. PotsdamLamb (talk) 23:38, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
Taking part in this community is something I wanna do. I was only trying to prevent impersonation of User:Operator873. Apologies, I was not sure how to use that template to specify that it was a doppleganger account. SpongeBoy67238 (talk) 23:41, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
I am not buying it and neither will the admins. PotsdamLamb (talk) 23:43, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
I think a soft indef on that account will do just fine unless the user vandalizes on it. Darubrub (Let me know) 00:40, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
Not for impersonating an admin :) PotsdamLamb (talk) 00:41, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
The only edits I see are just adding the doppelgänger template, I don’t see stuff like fake block threats, etc. Darubrub (Let me know) 00:43, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
That doesn’t matter much especially when they say it’s authorized and to see the talk of another newly created account around the same time. PotsdamLamb (talk) 00:44, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
  • (Non-administrator observation) Both accounts globally locked. Darubrub (Let me know) 14:49, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
  • (Non-administrator observation) If someone was creating a doppelgänger account though, it should be blocked as it should never have to be used. The whole point of doppelgänger accounts is that they never edit, they're just to prevent impersonations on common typos. Operate273 isn't very close to the username Operator873. Also, I think that doppelgänger accounts should be created by the person who would be impersonated. So in this, it'd be Operator873. Anyway, globally locked now as Darubrub says so any more action is pointless... --Ferien (talk) 15:40, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
@Darubrub: Both accounts are blocked by Bsadowski1 as well. C4Bomb2024 Talk 08:24, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Something funky and it screams Duck, DuckEdit

As everyone knows, we have an RfD due to close soon, however, based on both behavioral evidence and patterns, the article should be deleted for a number of reasons:

A. Article in question: Nima Owji (Developer); RfD at Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2021/Nima Owji (Developer)

i. User Namnak [created] this article who, for one, has a COI on the article.
 a. Namnak is a suspected sock puppet of en:User:Niocs whom clearly states they have a COI on this article on their user page.
ii. Mohadic created an account and has only made one edit right after it was created and that was to the RfD for a keep. They have made no other changes. This is a lock evasion, also of Niocs who used the account name of Rezadelavari see locked log here.
iii. Kasra.9nor same as ii above. Also a lock evasion of Rezadelavari. There is a great explanation on the request at Global “Cross-wiki spammer. This is User:Niocs, who spams autobiographies of himself cross-wiki. He was previously locked as Special:CentralAuth/Rezadelavari and Special:CentralAuth/Mohammadrezaliaghat. See, for example, Simple:Nima Owji (Developer) (from this sock) vs Commons:File:NimaOwji.jpg and wikidata:Q96197177 (from previous self-promoting socks). NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 12:09, 27 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The entire RfD is going down the drain IMO but since these are global socks (waiting on stewards to block them) I feel we should close out the RfD as delete, delete the article, block all three users based on being here for self-promoting and global block evasion. Again, that’s my thoughts. Thanks! PDL PotsdamLamb (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:04, 29 May 2021‎ (UTC)

There's no reason to quickly close the deletion request in my opinion. RfDs are based on consensus and these accounts have not really given good reasons to keep the article. There is consensus to delete the article but we should wait until the 7 days are up in case any reasonable reasons are given to keep the article. --Ferien (talk) 09:55, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
I forgot we don’t have G5 here. PotsdamLamb (talk) 14:23, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
There was one RfD in which multiple proxies voted keep for illegitimate reasons. I guess it would be the same here. Darubrub (Let me know) 14:28, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
Article has been deleted anyway. Single edit voters already reported to stewards. Stale. Darubrub (Let me know) 17:45, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

Semi-Protection - PermanentEdit

Can we SP permanently Names for ordinal numbers as IPs are constantly vandalizing it. Thanks! PotsdamLamb (talk) 15:30, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

I mean... the page has less than 50 edits since 2016. Not exactly out of control there.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 18:53, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
@Gordonrox24: The problem is they keep linking and changing things around. It has become a nuisance lately. Even just an SP for a week or two is fine with me. PotsdamLamb (talk) 18:59, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

DashboardEdit

Hi admins,

I wanted to know if you had something similar to Wikipedia Dashboard that puts all of the information in one place for you to access. If not, I can custom create one for simple based on our needs here (i.e. remove things we do not use like ARBCOM, etc.). Please let me know. PotsdamLamb (talk) 18:13, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

We've got Wikipedia:RecentChanges that should be displaying for you on Special:recentchanges, and it has basically every discussion page. We only have 6 to begin with. AN/ST/RfP/RfD/PVA.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 18:53, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
@Gordonrox24: I am very well aware of recent changes. Thank you for bringing that up. The dashboard is not what you are talking about. If you look at the dashboard link I provided, it lists everything on one page instead of having to go to each and everyone to see what is pending. There are also user permissions, RfAs, etc. Thank you for your comments. PotsdamLamb (talk) 19:02, 29 May 2021 (UTC)
Right.... that's exactly what is on the recent changes page. What discussion or pending task do we have that isn't already posted there? Even the EN dashboard doesn't actually list every discussion, only the most recent. What do you propose to put on our dashboard that isn't already shown at Recent Changes? We simply don't have the same volume of discussions that EN has, creating another page when they are already all posted at one location just doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Like I said, we've probably only got 6 semi-active discussion pages on the entire Wikipedia. As a point of order, as this really isn't something that an admin has to make an action on, WP:ST would have been the more correct location. --Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:08, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

SP for Yo Gabba Gabba!Edit

Can we get SP on this page please? Numerous IP editors keep changing things around to suit their preferences on colors, characters vs. main characters, etc. Thanks! PotsdamLamb (talk) 19:51, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Not going into details here. Looking at a diff between ChenzwBot reverting, and the most recent edit (27 edits later), these look generally constructive(here). So where's the problem? -Many small edits, a number of IPv6 editors? - I currently see no reason to protect the page. --Eptalon (talk) 20:26, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
If you look the two IPs keep changing ==Main Characters == to == Characters == and back again between them. They also keep changing who is friends with who. Granted these are minor edits but when one adds the other subtracts and replaces with their opinion. So you see like +6, -3, 0, etc. PotsdamLamb (talk) 20:39, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Rollback requestsEdit

There are currently two requests in WP:RFP/R that are currently not processed. Darubrub (Let me know) 14:38, 2 June 2021 (UTC)

Semi Protection of Wikipedia:NotabilityEdit

Hello. On the wikipedia policy about notability there as been a lot of vandalism. A bunch of IPs are adding notability tags to it and changing the template "nutshell" to "nutcracker". Many of them have been blocked for long-term abuse and block evasion, but the long-term abuse user keeps hopping onto different IPs. I suggest indef semi protection so all these abusive IPs can't edit the page. Thanks, Animalguy7 (talk) 01:02, 5 June 2021 (UTC).

Just a thought, an admin may still decide to protect, but it's a relatively low number of edits probably from the same person on different IPs. Makes me think protecting the page will just move their vandalism to another page. It's probably less about the page itself and more about just messing with us. Continuing to block is probably the more effective solution. --Gordonrox24 | Talk 05:42, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
Not done Yeah, we try to protect only when the amount of vandalism is hard to keep up with. This is not at that level. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:48, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Possible global lock evasionEdit

There is a global lock on a user who keeps creating the Muhammad Zaid article. I started researching this and found the global sock leads back to en:Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Zaid_Zayd/Archive. I have seen this article has been created by the same globally blocked user. It was created again today by Logogresta (not tagging user at this point). They also created Mahmood Ul Hassan (I put in for an RfD but based on what I see on EN wiki, this is indeed a fictitious person, so I am going to QD instead.) Based on the history of the globally locked and en wiki 100 sock puppets, I am assuming this is the same person. Here is the global information on the locked account. They show this as a spam only account. I am wondering:

  1. What do others think?
  2. Should I do a global request for checkuser?
  3. Can we temporarily block the user?

Thanks in advance for giving me thoughts, PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 17:30, 5 June 2021 (UTC)

Replace user pageEdit

Could an admin replace User:Russavia and User talk:Russavia with {{WMF-legal banned user}}? These pages are currently sysop-protected. Thanks. --Ferien (talk) 18:27, 8 June 2021 (UTC)

Any particular reason you think we should switch away from the exact code the WMF placed on their pages? (and I realize its essentially the same thing) -Djsasso (talk) 02:27, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Also, I think people are spending too much time and effort flagging user and user talk pages this way. The pages don't have to be flagged at all. Admins, stewards, etc. will decide if they need flagging; other users can just leave the pages alone so they don't "rub salt in the wound". --Auntof6 (talk) 02:39, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Yep this is very true, non-admins shouldn't really be adding any templated flags like sockpuppet etc to pages of already blocked sockpuppets. Often such things are left off by admins on purpose. -Djsasso (talk) 02:45, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
The logo used in WMF-banned notices has changed to a black Wikimedia logo. And also it adds the page to the correct category Category:Wikipedians banned by the Wikimedia Foundation. I agree, I don't think that we should spend time sock tagging. The reason I requested this here was just to fix the issues. --Ferien (talk) 15:48, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
Done but I wouldn't worry too much about changing such things. -Djsasso (talk) 20:06, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

User:27.109.115.155 User:27.109.115.158 These accounts (probably socks of the same vandal) are dedicated to creating hoax/non-notable articles. This has been going on for quite some time, so it's an LTA problem now. I'm requesting a block. Etoza (?) 09:43, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

.158 - Blocked for one week on June 9 by Peterdownunder; .155 blocked for 2 weeks by Macdonald-ross. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 18:44, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

Spam articlesEdit

I'd recommend blocking the Farhan Rana Rajpoot Youtube title (I forgot the actual name for this process, I hope it's understandable) since it's getting recreated by the same editor over and over (one copy was already deleted today). Etoza (?) 16:38, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Deletion requestEdit

Hi. Could you please delete this page‎ as the creator keeps on removing the QD template? The page has been deleted several times at QD and a couple at RfD. Thanks! --Ferien (talk) 17:19, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Done by Macdonald-ross, thanks! --Ferien (talk) 19:34, 9 June 2021 (UTC)

Temp SP PleaseEdit

As I am doing major changes to the article Anti-tobacco movement in Nazi Germany I would like to request temporary semi for a couple of days. While working on it, an IP vandalized it 3 times, including one blanking. This will help me so I do not have to stop and revert it back. I would appreciate it very much. 2 or 3 days is fine with me. I plan on being done tomorrow but may go until Saturday. Thanks. PDLTalk to me!OMG, What have I done? 18:43, 10 June 2021 (UTC)

We generally don't protect for very low amounts of vandalism like this. -Djsasso (talk) 02:25, 11 June 2021 (UTC)
And you can always copy it to a sandbox to work on. --Auntof6 (talk) 02:40, 11 June 2021 (UTC)

Jimmy Hibbert page semi-protection requiredEdit

Jimmy Hibbert has been subject for months to two warring IPs attempting to add conflicting dates of birth without any citations to a reliable source. There are zero reliable sources for a date of birth for this person (I have checked extensively) and this is a biography of a living person. The IMDB bio, which is not a reliable source, actually contains both conflicting DoBs. The IPs even remove "citation needed" tags. This article should be protected from IP editing ideally for the foreseeable future. The IPs have pulled the same thing on the English WP article which is now configured to allow only autoconfirmed registered users. Voceditenore (talk) 09:47, 14 June 2021 (UTC)

Not done Page protection (semi- or otherwise) is usually called for only when the amount of vandalism is hard to keep up with. That isn't the case here, so I'm not going to protect. I have added the page to my watchlist so I can help watch for future vandalism. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:14, 14 June 2021 (UTC)
Hi Auntof6. The thing to watch out for is not strictly vandalism. It is the repeated addition of various conflicting dates of birth (e.g. 25 Nov. 1955, 23 Nov. 1956, and 25 July 1955) none of which have a reliable source. Nor can a reliable source be found. I have now removed the latest addition. Voceditenore (talk) 09:39, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia as autobiography-in-real-timeEdit

Shariful Islam Naik is writing his own article in lieu of becoming notable in real life. All the "sources" are self-generated by the article's subject/author. I have tagged for speedy deletion. GPinkerton (talk) 05:50, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Strange RfDEdit

Hi! Please review this RfD because something is very fishy there: it was closed by a fresh account, I kinda suspect sockpuppetry per PotsdamLamb's comment @wikidata. Thanks in advance! Bencemac (talk) 08:14, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

@Bencemac: Thanks for the note. I have undone the non-admin closure and left a message on the user's talk page. Even if it's not a sockpuppet, non-admin closures should be done only when there are no votes to delete. --Auntof6 (talk) 09:32, 15 June 2021 (UTC)
