User:Ravensfire

Hello Respected editor, there is an user name Ravensfire doing wrong edits for increasing his number of edits please review his edits, he is placing random tags on pages for deletation. He is distroying Wikipedia pages. First he remove sources then he is removing data and after 2-3 days he is Using deletation Tag on that pages. I think he is doing this for money. This is not acceptable. Please review his account. This is totally wrong and against to the Wikipedia guidelines. Fahadsamual78 (talk) 05:05, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I do not see any problem in their edits – they're just helping us remove spam and non-notable people from our Wikipedia and their help is definitely appreciated. Fahadsamual78, in future, you should put the template {{AN-notice}} on talk pages of editors who are involved in a topic on the administrators' noticeboard. --Ferien (talk) 21:44, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is interesting. I'm guessing that many of the articles Fahadsamual78 is complaining about are related to the "IP range advertising" discussion above. Many had similar issues - highly promotional, use of paid articles as sources and sources that never mentioned the article subject or the information they should have supported. After the range was blocked, I've seen articles created by brand new accounts that end in 2 or 3 numbers, with their only edit being a full article created, with sources, correct formatting and decent layout. All being very promotional in tone. I'm wondering if these accounts are all connected, as this feels like a paid editing group. Ravensfire (talk) 18:32, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
An example created today is Deepak Thanwala. Brand new editor, one edit, uses sources, article layout - it's just highly promotional in tone with some questionable sources. Borderline notability, but needs some significant cleaning. With the similar MO as the blocked IP range, maybe a CU could look into this? Ravensfire (talk) 20:11, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page Idea

What if we made an "On This Day" section of the Main Page, like on enwiki? I think it could be an interesting idea. QuicoleJR (talk) 23:20, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It'd be nice, but I'm not sure if it would work. If we were to have the same facts as enwiki's today, only 2 of the bold articles in the facts out of 5 exist here. It appears it would be a little better than DYK in terms of maintenance as once we've done all the dates for a year, we would only have to occasionally update them, but actually getting a good amount of articles for all those dates in the first place would be challenging. --Ferien (talk) 23:44, 24 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. Maybe when the site reaches 100K articles we can revisit this idea. QuicoleJR (talk) 12:36, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we do currently have 232,467 articles right now but it's more whether those articles are on topics that would work for On This Day, and whether those articles are a good quality to be on the main page. --Ferien (talk) 12:38, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tvactorcreator

Tvactorcreator has created Chitrak Shah earlier today. It originally was a very promotional article, full of marketing fluff and decidedly not simple english. It was tagged for speedy deletion by myself and an IP editor, both times removed by TVactorcreator. I did some cleanup on the article and added a notability tag. TVactorcreator removed that and we've gone back and forth over the tag, with some discussions on both of our talk page here and here. Would someone mind taking a look at this? From TVactorcreator's comments, they aren't willing to discuss this matter and will continue the disruptive editing. Thanks. Ravensfire (talk) 20:36, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I see, IP address & you both are the same person. I may have added less sources, but the subject is country’s biggest developer of state in real estate. So he’s definitely notable. I agreed to your removal as I generated it through AI from news articles in the media, you can google Chitrak Shah and check under news section. Thats all, considering @Ravensfire edits he’s been only doing the tags and edits no contributions creatively. Tvactorcreator (talk) 20:41, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Tvactorcreator Except that the subject, as far as I can see, fails the general notability criteria. I have opened an RfD. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 22:11, 25 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's an interesting comment from the IP in the history. "We are adding awards and achievements." I don't think that's an accident. Layout is similar to the IP ranges mentioned in "IP range advertising" above. Some odd sources- the Switzerland Post? Looking deeper, many of the "sources" are the same article, a clearly paid marketing piece. Most of these are pure junk sources masquerading as a real news site. This should be deleted. Ravensfire (talk) 11:50, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Quite a few people have expressed concern over the following comment from Rathfelder on Wikipedia:Requests for deletion/Requests/2023/Category:Cancer survivors:

Delete. All these people will die in the end. Rathfelder (talk) 14:49, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Since then, both Illusion Flame and Bobherry have responded calling the comment harsh and after I closed the RfD, Davey2010 removed the !vote from Rathfelder and its replies. I have since reverted that removal, as the discussion is closed. From my POV, I did see the comment and the opposition it attracted while closing, but I did extend WP:AGF quite a bit, thinking that they did not word it the way they wanted it to be worded, and therefore didn't end up commenting on it in my closure. As this comment has attracted quite a bit of opposition already, I'm bringing it here to see if anyone thinks action against Rathfelder is necessary, but they haven't responded to any comment yet, perhaps because there have been no notifications given to them at this point. --Ferien (talk) 20:35, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I really don’t think anything but a warning is needed here. Seems to be like a case of a misunderstanding that came off different than how the author intended. It was definitely rude and uncalled for, but I don’t think we need to take action on this, besides a warning. I’d like to hear others opinions though. Illusion Flame (talk) 20:39, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
My reading of their comment at the time was "they will all die from their cancer(s) eventually" which I found incredibly disrespectful and tasteless however having re-read it the author may have actually been saying it as in "we're all going to die eventually" which is true we will. Certainly could've been worded better but given it leaves their comment open to interpretation I still believe it should be removed (or Rathfielder should amend it). Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:47, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The discussion is closed now, so edits to it will be reverted.(I think) Illusion Flame (talk) 20:50, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Although discussions are closed that doesn't mean comments cannot be amended or removed. But anyway if we've all misunderstood Rath then best case scenario would be to reword the !vote and remove the replies –Davey2010Talk 20:54, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I’d like an admin to clarify here and for @Rathfelder to comment as well. Illusion Flame (talk) 20:55, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Illusion Flame, what needs to be clarified? --Ferien (talk) 20:59, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Whether the closed discussion can be edited to amend the comment. Illusion Flame (talk) 21:04, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If there's a consensus that that's necessary then WP:IAR surely. Editing a closed discussion to clarify your own opinion shouldn't be that big of a deal? --Ferien (talk) 21:05, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, just thought it best to clarify before @Rathfelder replies. Illusion Flame (talk) 21:06, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What I meant, and I was clearly too abrupt, is that classifying people as survivors - of anything- doesnt seem like a good idea. Survival is not a permanent state. I didnt intend to upset anyone and I apologise to those I did. Rathfelder (talk) 21:44, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That’s a good enough explanation for me. 😊 Anyone else disagree? Illusion Flame (talk) 21:47, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I say a warning is needed as it clearly breaks policy. The comment was completely unneeded. Bobherry Talk My Changes 21:59, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Can someone explain what policy I broke? Is it wrong to say that all humans are mortal? Rathfelder (talk) 21:38, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bobherry Rathfelder has apologized and I see any further escalation (warning, block, etc) as unnecessary. The comment may have been pointy or harsh, and it could have been phrased in a better way. I don't think pointing out human mortality is breaking any policy. This issue is resolved from what I see. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 21:55, 27 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This user started editing here on 15 May. Since then, every one of their edits has been made to their userspace. They've been using their userspace as a personal sandbox of sorts. Some of their edits include inventing alternate historical events: User:AE3907/World War 3 or 4 or 5. As can be seen here at their talk page, I've asked them twice to stop, but this hasn't slowed them down, and now they've uploaded this alternate historical map of a future world war: File:World map 3,4 and 5.png. I think that, per WP:NOTHERE, their editing behavior is not consistent with Simple English WP's guidelines. NytharT.C 13:42, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

To be fair, some of those entries are interesting and have potential, plus they are in userspace. I would encourage an administrator to look at the individual subpages and see which ones, if any, should be deleted. This is nowhere near as bad as someone creating bad articles, as it is in userspace. Blissyu2 (talk) 14:05, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • This thread was archived by a bot. In the meantime, AE3907 has continued to make edits only to their userspace. Their article draft has been declined on the English language Wikipedia, so I get the feeling the user is now trying to place it wherever else they can (currently on the German WP). I am not even sure what they wrote here is Simple English, but then, I am no expert on that.

Not sure what your policies are here, but I thought I'd at least point it out to you for you to deal with as you think is right. Thanks, --2003:C0:8F12:B100:2961:D8DD:2AFE:5E3A (talk) 12:51, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You do not need to notify us of unblock requests. They appear in CAT:RFU that is monitored regularly. --Ferien (talk) 16:31, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is the Simple English Wikipedia. If that user is not able to express what he wants to express in English, this is not the right place for them. You are excluding everyone else by communicating in Russian on that user's talk page.
Same thing in the German Wikipedia, by the way. I don't believe that this user speaks a word of German. Their contributions on talk pages are mostly nonsensical computer generated replies. --2003:C0:8F12:B100:F8D6:B7D8:AFA1:6D6 (talk) 19:48, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think we have any restrictions on what language can be used on user talk pages. Messages on user talk pages aren't required to be understood by everyone. -- Auntof6 (talk) 19:58, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Really? This would not have surprised me in any other Wikipedia project, but it does here. This is the Simple English Wikipedia. If we can't expect inclusivity as a goal here, where can we? --2003:C0:8F12:B100:9D39:D5E1:8C39:7DBF (talk) 22:53, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Notice that I specified user talk pages. On any other talk pages, the conversations would be public for anyone to participate in, so English should be used, preferably simple English. That's where the inclusivity would come in. -- Auntof6 (talk) 00:59, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am confused how it would be more inclusive to tell people they are not permitted to communicate privately in a language they are comfortable speaking. The only inclusivity I see there is for people not involved in the conversation and is it really any of their business? If they want to eavesdrop on others communicating, they can find their own ways to translate the conversation between two other people (or groups of people). If I wanted to listen in on people talking in a language I don't understand, that is my problem, not theirs. It is one thing if this were on Simple Talk but quite another on a user talk page. Pure Evil (talk) 09:26, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I do not see why user talk pages should be private communication. If people wish to communicate privately, they can use e-mails or Wikimail or message systems or whatever, in any language they like. User talk pages are openly published on the internet for anyone in the whole world to read. It is absurd to call reading them "eavesdropping". As for my reason, I gave that down below in the P.S.. Finding out about a massive conflict of interest is, in my opinion, an excellent reason to make this the business of everyone who is working toward a better Wikipedia.
I may be a bit touchy about the issue of inclusivity, but I have several people with different kinds of disabilities in my family who are constantly struggling with all kinds of road blocks in their path, so to speak. It is frustrating to see that even here, "inclusivity" apparently only means the front end of things.
And yes, for that very reason I apologize for contributing in English here and not in Simple English, which I should be doing. English is not my first language, so I am trying the best I can. --2003:C0:8F4F:5200:CD79:72E1:FAC4:BBD (talk) 11:40, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Private and public may not be the best words to describe this. What I meant by public was that on talk pages other than user talk pages, participation from other users would usually be expected and encouraged. Of course, that would depend on the specific talk pages and what was being discussed -- some things are between the admins/crats and one specific user.
Communication on user talk pages is not private, since anyone can read it. However, that doesn't mean that it must be in English (simple or otherwise). Our target audience here includes people whose first language is not English, and there are various reasons people will use other languages in their talk.
  • If user A has trouble communicating in English and user B is comfortable communicating in their native language, then user B might use it to help explain things to user A.
  • Users might be communicating about things that aren't related to Wikipedia, such as some non-wiki thing they have in common. A certain amount of that is allowed because it encourages a sense of community.
Of course, if something like possible change to the wiki is being discussed, that discussion should eventually be on a non-user discussion/talk page and be in English. -- Auntof6 (talk) 15:56, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. My reason for being annoyed at this is that we are currently discussing the same questions on the German WP, how to deal with this user and their article, and it can be useful to check what is going on in other Wikipedias. Most of us speak enough English to read and understand what is going on here, but having portions of the discussion in Russian and having to run them through Google Translate is not helpful. --2003:C0:8F12:B100:F8D6:B7D8:AFA1:6D6 (talk) 19:57, 11 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

A user I previously contacted, BOjojo7777, began to send messages to me on russian langauge. Because I already know Russian language, I was able to contact to that user, BOjojo7777. On German Wikipedia, I can't contact that user because I don't know German (only a few words). 95.134.111.155 (talk) 04:54, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Don't bother. In the first place, that user has been globally blocked. In the second place, I do not believe that the user speaks even a word of German. --2003:C0:8F4F:5200:CD79:72E1:FAC4:BBD (talk) 11:40, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@MathXplore: I think this is within reasonable limits for doing without the flood flag. As I mentioned before, the rule of thumb is "about 100". I think this is close enough. Yes, people complain about seeing multiple similar changes, but we try to minimize what is done under the flood flag. Hittites

On Hittites, unregistered users keep adding that the Hittites were Armenian, without any source. I can't revert them again because that would violate WP:3RR, so can an administrator decide how to handle this? Kk.urban (talk) 04:57, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted their last change so technically, your 3rr count is reset. That should help until an admin can get to it. Pure Evil (talk) 05:57, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The rule is three reverts in a day (English Wikipedia says within a 24-hour period), not three consecutive reverts. Kk.urban (talk) 05:59, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
True, but it also says "can be blocked" not will be blocked. And it only applies to edit wars and not dealing with vandalism. #rr is not often evoked unless trouble is brewing. keeping up with a vandal will almost never bring it up and if it is more than one editor batting the vandal, there is even less of a reason to invoke it. Protecting page transcluded onto main page

Shouldn't the subpages of Wikipedia:Very good articles be protected since they're transcluded on the main page? The cascading protection doesn't work as the page that's actually transcluded on the main page is a redirect.

For example, anyone can edit Wikipedia:Very good articles/Evolution, the featured article at the moment, and those changes will show up on the main page. Maybe those pages should be protected upon creation? Thanks, FatalFit | ✉   04:32, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@FatalFit What Brian said above. There's no protection icon because it's not really necessary, but the blurbs are semiprotected. Cascade-protecting the main page would block autoconfirmed users from editing the DYK template. — *Fehufangą✉ Talk page 05:58, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Two times, an unregistered user created Shai Benbasat. Then someone started an RfD, then the creator asked for deletion of the page. Now they have created the page again. That seems disruptive. If they wanted it deleted, they shouldn't have created it again. @Eptalon:. So what happens here? Kk.urban (talk) 22:58, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That account which violates username policy, likely includes common vandalism, so to prevent persistent disruptive changing, the page created by that account, 50/50 Heroes, needs to be protected for a period of 1 week, or, if it has been repeatedly recreated, it needs to be create protected (salting) for a period of 1 month or, after persistent recreation, indefinitely. 178.94.181.131 (talk) 16:40, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is open, with very few exceptions pretty much anyone can edit any article. It might be that the reference does not support the statement where it is attached. So it gets removed, and if it isn't used in other places, it disappears from the article. And unless this is done in bad faith, there is little we can do. It's hard to reply without specifics, but in the IP's other (now deleted) post here, they mentioned Mridul_Tiwari. I've made a series of edits on that article when it was first created [5]. The edits were to cut down on the promotional down in the article, remove unsourced material, consolidate duplicate references into a single ref, remove a press release that was being used as a source, remove some paid article being used as sources and cut down the other of other websites linked as there was an official website which had everything. I went back later and removed another reference that was a clear paid article [6]. And that was my last edit there. I tagged the image on commons as a copyright violation because it was pulled from the subjects website and not correctly licensed. Another editor has nominated the article for deletion however. I stand by the edits I've made on that article as working to improving it towards the standard of an decent article, not a marketing piece. I'll reply more generically in the rant / section below. It has felt like there has been a fair number of promotional and spammy articles being created about India related subjects in the past few weeks. A realty company. Random doctors. Businessman. User:Ravensfire/QD_log has the quick delete's I've requested. I stand by them. The main article that dontbescared is commenting on is Abdul Adnan which is currently at RFD. This article was a mess when created by a single-edit throwaway account. Promotional tone throughout the article, multiple paid articles being used as sources, claims that really pushing credibility (can you call someone a cricketeer when they've only playing in state-level junior tournaments? And no news source that has decent mention of them?). don'tbescared has showed up and is aggressively defending the article.
They've deleted my comment at rfd, replacing it with a completely opposite comment [8]. Their comments there have included legal threats it may be amount to defamation of this person according to indian laws and if editor wants to deal with it and delete it then face the consequences.[9] They don't offer policy-based views, just hand-waving and insisting that we ignore the man behind the curtain. [10] The "man behind the curtain" here is the prevalence of paid articles in the Indian news media. The w:Paid news in India article has some information, and there's a really good writeup at w:User:Ms_Sarah_Welch/sandbox/Paid_news_and_private_treaties. This article (and most of the others I've tagged for QD) have been inundated with highly promotional paid articles as part of PR campaigns. I don't oppose it, but also don't see a need for it. The template is blank, so it doesn't affect the page, and every few months, the templates get removed from pages with AWB, usually by Djsasso, and I sometimes do it if he hasn't in a while. --Ferien (talk) 16:26, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request for semi protection of Abdul Adnan

There is some edit warring about the sources used. --Trade (talk) 16:05, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not done seeing as the issue is over but I would warn the other editors involved who violated 3RR over this (@Ravensfire, A09, and QuicoleJR:) that edit warring is not ok even in this case. There is no need to remove problematic sources from the article in the first place when an article is at RfD (and looking likely to be deleted very soon). To then edit war (with 6 reverts) over something so minor is unacceptable, on both sides – regardless of whether multiple editors agreed, 3RR still applies to you. Please note that future 3RR violations may result in blocks. --Ferien (talk) 16:20, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Understood, I got irked and carried away and I know better. Hopefully this mess gets resolved soon. Appreciate the polite reminder. Ravensfire (talk) 16:24, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I do not understand how I violated 3RR. I only made one revert. QuicoleJR (talk) 17:30, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
QuicoleJR, my apologies for the slight error. 6 reverts were made to the page, by three different editors including you. This is edit warring even if it does not technically violate 3RR, because the article was constantly being changed back and forth with no attempt at discussion on the talk page from any party. --Ferien (talk) 20:58, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As far as my understandment goes, from when is acting against consensus and established rules a misconduct per 3RR? A09 (talk) 20:31, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Obligatory not an admin so just my view, but generally unless it's clear vandalism, BLP issue, copyright issue or spam, 3RR applies. Unfortunately, editing against consensus usually isn't vandalism, just misguided editing that can result in a block for doing that. The right approach was to ask for the protection and probably should have reported the edit-warring from Dontbescared who did hit 4 reverts (on that account...) on the 6th. The article is promotional of a non-notable person, but it wouldn't fall into the spam exemption either. It was pretty clearly heading towards delete at the RFD, so best approach may have been to just hand the UPE editors rope and just let it be. Which is why I haven't removed the last edit that put the paid news junk back into the article. Ravensfire (talk) 20:57, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Submission to the Wikipedia Board | Sunscreen Page

Hello esteemed administrators,

Over the past few months, I've taken an active interest in editing the Sunscreen page and have even taken the initiative to create a Certified Organic Sunscreen Page. The rationale behind this endeavor is rooted in the current zeitgeist where the terminology and marketing surrounding "organic" products have become increasingly prominent. This prominence has been particularly evident in the domains of food and personal care products.

To the average consumer, when a product, be it an avocado or a cosmetic, is marketed as "organic," there's an inherent expectation. They anticipate a product free from synthetic pesticides, herbicides, petrochemicals, and devoid of any cross-contamination practices. This assumption is informed not only by marketing but also by regulatory standards set by various consumer commissions globally.

However, within the scope of Wikipedia's cosmetic pages, there's been a recurring contention. Some editors are inclined to describe petrochemical ingredients as "organic compounds." While technically accurate in a strict chemical sense, this terminology might be misleading for the layperson, especially in the context of a cosmetic product.

An insightful user noted on the Sunscreen talk page: "The language for these kinds of articles is a fraught area. From a scientific perspective, ALL substances in sunscreen are chemicals... It would be nice if we could make a firm decision to either go completely with popular, idiomatic use of language or with fully correct, scientific terminology."

Given the protection of the term "organic" by authorities such as the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission and equivalents worldwide, it's pivotal for Wikipedia to offer clarity. Our platform, revered for its reliability, should present information in a manner that aligns with widely accepted conventions and avoids potential confusion for its vast readership.

I'm looking forward to a collaborative discussion on this topic and appreciate the board's time and consideration.

Warm regards, DemocratGreen (talk) 01:12, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DemocratGreen and thanks for your message. As administrators, we do not decide what happens on content pages. Therefore, no intervention is required from administrators here, however, what you point out is important. You could follow our "be bold" policy and make the decision yourself or alternatively, initiate a discussion at another venue, perhaps Talk:Sunscreen or Wikipedia:Simple talk. You may want to use those ways as there has been 2 4 more vandal attacks with reverts and we are declaring the man a war criminal again. And still the claim of a war crimes trial in the summary.
